Starts drives fine. Apparently there is a fuse under bonnet that controls the rcl, interior lights and clock. Would explain it all i guess

Probably.  Check battery also and replace if necessary, as suggested.

Interesting - change that first then!

I'd also check and clean the battery terminals, earth straps etc as a matter of course on something this age that might not have had a particularly meticulous owner.

Could even be a loose earth under the dash when the stereo was fitted?

Posted

Stereo is original to the car. Going to go check this fuse and keep everything crossed

Oh I thought it said aftermarket somewhere earlier in the thread, my mistake.

Congrats by the way, no one else could kill an unkillable car in under 24 hrs.

Does the Sony stereo do the beeping thing when you turn the ignition off? Our P-reg Carina E did.

Posted

No beeping when turned off. The electric malady is fixed already,7.5 amp fuse blown. Ive also found if a door or boot isnt shut properly and i press lock button it beeps at me and wont lock the doors.

Now that i can answer and i didnt think of it earlier but i put a new bulb in the interior light and one terminal was loose. Unwittingly bridged it i guess.

Just to repeat this.

I liked the early prefacelift like this then i thpught they went downhill. Yes it is a forgettable motor but its now getting of age where they have all but dissappeared

I like the facelift! I think the earlier, darkened headlights look like something you'd expect from a Sport trim. The later, brighter front end looks much more agreeable to your average giffer and suits the car better. Fuck the vvt motors though; a boring reliable Toyota without the reliability; what's the point? Still, at least it won't attempt to kill you like the models that followed.

Brimmed it today to go to the field of dreams. Brimmed it when home. 20.5 litres over 190.7 miles. 42.3 mpg. I can live with that. Ill get an accurate town driving figure soon.

That seems alright does that.  Hopefully it'll take some stress off so you can recover a bit.

Im hoping so too, thanks. Its a good cruiser. I drove from field of dreams home without a break which is an achievement for me. And i didnt ache

Been there, mine was 1800cc. It ran perfectly for years but blew a head gasket at 300,000+ km's. When the head came off the bores were perfect. I sold it later and saw it about for several more years. Boring but perfect !!

I think you've found the perfect car for your needs Bub and you get better economy than my diesel. Should hopefully serve you well for a while longer.

Hope so. Been hankering after an auto for a while bit not actually needed one. My friend also told me to go japanese and i wouldnt be disappointed. He was right. The economy amazes me and the fact i can do nearly 100 mile without a break and through thick motorway traffic with my knackered body and not hurt at the other side speaks volumes.

Great choice.

The mk1 Avensis / Derbyshire Lexus is a bullet proof, reliable, economical and comfortable motor.

I blew the 'dome' fuse changing the interior light bulb on mine.

I feel better knowing it wasnt just me then! Odd what it trips out though.

I know. Caused me a bit searching. Central locking was the most noticeable absence then little things like the clock didn't keep time when the ignition wasn't on. I think I used the Toyota owners forum which is good for info. I seem to remember the Haynes and owners handbook not identifying which fuse to check.

Another fun failure for Avensis of mk1 age is the ignition switch wearing out. When the ignition key was turned to start the car there was a short delay, then the starter motor fired. Turning the key back to off and then to start helped. It did that a handful of times and then no starting at all. Easy to replace but had me concerned the immobiliser was playing up.

Get yourself a jumpstart and go back to the Field of Dreams and collect Stanky's free battery? Assuming that he took it with him of course!
