mk1 XR2  8)  8)

That white mk2 with the Zetec conversion also looks fucking brilliant, and immaculate too!!

Sadly mine is a simpleton 1.1L :-(

Positively decadent compared to a 950 Popular!

Pulled this out the garage today, can't think of anything I would want off the one in the salvage yard, unless there is actually metal surrounding the sunroof

Tbh looks nice and like it's had a lot of work. What made you change the engine though?

Pah...All Mk2 owners really wish they had a mk1 .... :mrgreen::mrgreen:

Christine, I thought you had sold yours?

I've got an XR2 as well but it's that crappy grey colour. Wanted a red one but it was cheap.

It's a long story but in short. I originally put it together in 2008 using xr2 running gear then sold it. Brought it back a couple of years back in rough condition compared to when I sold it. I did the body and got it back on the road but the 1.6 didn't feel so quick compared to modern stuff so I put the zetec in. There is a full thread on the blue forum if your interested in the full rundown of the story.

I'll try my hardest not to come across as a total twat or some kind of weirdo but I just don't get this "feel so quick to modern stuff" and 'keeping up with modern traffic'.

Modern traffic is slow on the majority of roads near towns and there's speed limits and cameras. Only time a big* engine is any use is the motorway and even then it's a bit pointless. I just don't get* engine swaps. But then I don't get this lowering thing either or roll cages.

My Fiesta is a 950. It wants to go everywhere at 40, it can't, it's too busy.

Anyway each to their own and all that.

Nope, was still there this afternoon. I thought my 1100L  goes pretty damn good too..I did at first think someone had put a 1600 in it ! However ,it was owned by an elderly lady for the first 28 years ..who wasn't elderly when she bought it  new . She stopped driving and gave it to another lady who i bought it off 6 months later . First lady spended 9.5K on servicing in her ownership..it's had 144 spark plugs and 36 condensers ..oil and filter changed every 6 months !

I don't get it either. My Horizon 1.1 had about as much pulling power as Ken Livingstone at a young Conservatives ball, yet I never found it hamstrung in modern traffic or on the open road, same with my mark 3 which were known for glacial acceleration against earlier Fiestas. In fact I am getting increasingly frustrated on the 60mph roads in the rural areas as you invariably get stuck behind some Hyundai i10 or similar doing a resolute 40 mph.

I think it is  just cool in Ford circles to mod everything. I have joined the Facebook mark 3 Fiesta page and so far nearly every car I've seen posted has been lowered or re-engined or is on the way to being so.

One thing I have often wondered is why the craze for removing badges from cars?

Love seeing a low compression 950 pop Fiesta that's completely standard, no passenger mirror, no radio etc

Good job I built a car I wanted then instead of what you guys wanted.

I like blue cheese maybe you hate it. We're all different and there's no right or wrong and I don't understand why some people always do the same things to cars, I was trying to start a discussion, people can disagree in a friendly manner.

A Zetec works very well in 1980s Fords, much greater interval between breakdowns compared to the old CVH.

What you need to do is visit some of the local Kia dealers, chance your arm on them having loads of Shuma bits lying about forgotten about upstairs in the parts department that otherwise they are never going to shift, nobody else is going to come in wanting them, and theyre never going to get retail price so theyd probably sell you the whole lot for a decent figure as its better than them getting skipped and them getting nothing.

But do it now before they do get chucked, when I worked in main dealers usually stuff got skipped in a parts department clear out every 5 years, if it was for a car older than 15years old by that point it was definite, anything sitting prominent for even 3/4 years got skipped. Once saw a genuine Irmscher styling kit RRP about a grand getting launched in  a skip at the Vauxhall dealer next door to us. They would never even offer us the stuff cheap or ask incase we mightve knew someone who wanted it for cheap. Then our place had a load of Xsara bits getting launched, only 1 guy in the branch owned a Xsara and the stuff was no use to him so it just got binned. wasteful!

Cheers, good idea. Might pop to Ken Hope in Kelso sometime and ask. I was looking the other day and the options book for the Shuma on ebay.

that fiesta has been there a while. I read a thread somewhere about it ages ago. I think it was an owner died and family didnt want to see the car driving about story IIRC

I have an itch for a mk2 estate, how bad is it?

Good luck getting it out of there. Silverlake are tossers when it comes to stuff like that. In the days when I actually gave a shit about cars, I tried getting a near mint D plate XJ40 with the black rear panel (rare now) out of there. The car even had four months MOT ffs. Silverlake flatly refuse to let anything out of there once it has passed those gates. I was told by all means take whatever I wanted, but if I wanted the car itself it would be leaving in two pieces because they don't sell whole cars that are not salvage vehicles.

Update: the mk2 Cavalier estate is still there - that's several months and still looks largely complete.  There is also a mk3 Cavalier and a Mk3 Astra.  The engine and box have gone from the Astra and also the drivers side front wing.

Visited again yesterday.  They seem to have significantly reduced their prices, £10 for a front wing now including VAT.  The staff are friendly and the place is tidy.  Still a few older cars, a Mk3 Astra, a Rover 75, other stuff.  If you don't want guarantees, parts seem cheaper too.  £5 for a fuel pump for my Astra, bought as a spare, which at that price is fine with me.

Recommended.  You can check stocks on line too.

Most scrapyards are like that to be fair. They’re running a business and they aren’t sentimental people at the best of times, chances are they’ll see quite a lot back in parts on something like that, selling it joe soap that comes in off the street and the associated pissing about makes no sense unless you are paying way way over the odds. Anyway once it’s had the COD on it that’s it.

I had a few people wanting the whole car to save when I broke the Mk2 Saloon I had, wanting it for scrap money. Why would I bother? I could have the bits I needed, sold the bits I didn’t and be a few hundred better off.

I was behind a Silverlake truck on Friday, there was a shitty 05 Pug something or other on the back but up behind the trucks cab was an absolutely mint white X reg Pug 206.

Not my cup of tea at all but it looked just like an old giffers car that’d been looked after. Seemed a bit of a waste to send it for scrap.

It’d even recently been polished by the looks of all the little water beads on it!

Thanks for the info Lisbon_road - that was what always put me off Silverlake, they run a tight ship and their yard guys have obviously been on a 'customer service' course because they are generally polite and helpful The only thing that counted agains them was prices, which tended to be a bit on the high side I found.

Might pop over there at some point soon just to see what they have. Several of thefleet headlights are a bit yellow-y so might be worth checking to see if they have some less knackered ones.

You can look up the prices on line which are fixed regardless of car or condition, though I suspect they'll reduce them a bit if you don't have a guarantee.
