Went to this do today with the main intention of watching a friend of mine racing.  The racing was good but not something that excites me enough to go and see it if I don't know one of the racers. I'm fine to support a friend by being there, meh otherwise.  Anyway... there were other things happening too.  Loads of Olive Drab if that's your bag (it's not mine), a bit of an air show, people in period attire some of whom got it more right than others and a really good variety of static displays.  There was food and tat shops too, as is to be expected.  All in, not a bad £11 per head even really.  I got in free because of said racing friend having excess tickets so that was even better.

 

There were lots of things to see and try and identify.  Most I could, some were new to me (like the Standard Nine you'll see later).  Feel free to let me know if anything is incorrectly identified.

 

Marcos Mantula.  I corrected myself on this, I thought it was a Mantis in person.

I don't know a lot about bikes.  One of these said Triumph on it and the other Ariel, so I assume that's what they are.  I liked them, at any rate.

Quite a lot of Austin Champs and far too many Jeeps in attendance.  There was a lot of that cringey nostalgic fantasy WWII nonsense going on.  I really get annoyed by the romantic fantasising of war time.

Americans were there too.  People in the North East really like their American cars, I'm not really sure why.

 

There was a Ford Falcon racing, it looked so right next to the Minis in the racing paddock.

Italy next perhaps?  Why not, there were some interesting Italians there.  Things like this charming little Fiat 850 Sport.  I'd only seen photos of these before, seeing one in person made me really rather want one even though I never actually fit Fiats.

Lancia Fulvia Rallye 1.3S.  That's the desireable version, I'm told.  It looked clean and used, the best combination for this sort of car.

Another oddments selection.  These are things I deem a bit special for one reason or another.  I finally FINALLY got to see an Auto Union DKW Junior IN PERSON.  I was not disappointed, even by the wheels.  It had the strangest side repeaters.

The Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane nearby was, unarguably, far more interesting and in its own way more imposing.  I love the wings on these, there's something incredibly satisfying about the odd shape of them.

I'll finish off with the really old stuff and a couple of oddments I didn't know where else to put.

 

Austin Six.  I'm trying to educate myself more on this era of car.  Trouble is, they almost all look alike to me.  At least Vauxhall had that distinctive scoop cut out the sides of the bonnet corners to help.

I also didn't know what this handsome curvy two door was.  It did at least look different and the grille is slightly reminiscent of a Triumph Dolomite of similar vintage.  It is in fact a Standard Nine, a car I didn't know about until today.  It being a Standard could be why the grille is like a plainer version of one found on a Triumph.

Oddments just to finish off.  This Clan Crusador was all badged up with Alfa stuff and had Alfa bits of interior.  I wonder if a 75 donated as much as it could for this one.  I did always think Clans were Imp powered and when I first saw this I mistook it for a Ginetta.


This is actually a Clan Clover, a.k.a. Irish Clan, which uses an Alfa 33 boxer engine. They're super-rare, I don't think they ever made more than 30 examples ?

You see Ford Zodiacs (and Zephyrs) and the like much less at shows now than you used to.  It seems to be 1960s or newer and 1940s or older, the 1950s bracket just seems to be disappearing.  I'm not really sure why.  It was nice to see a Z car after a while of not doing.

A great selection, thanks for posting. I think that the Lanchester is an early 1930s 10. It looks a lot of car for such a small engine to lug around but I'm getting increasingly attracted to the really old stuff, even though it is completely impractical round where I live. Nice to see a Mark 2 Zodiac, you're right they seem to have almost disappeared, even from steam fairs. which you find normally have a good selection of pre 1965 cars

That's a Jensen FF rather than an Interceptor; the twin gill vents give it away, so it's harboring fruity lumps of Ferguson Formula transmissiony goodness.

 

Delage is completely different to Delahaye, I've always pronounced them as I assume the french do as the founders were both french.

Oh thank you :)  Who doesn't love an opportunity to show off?

OK, the Preston Park one, VTC, and the last one, SSK, are correct for post- and pre-facelift respectively.  The middle one, BWT, is a lash-up.

The facelift occurred in two stages.  For the 1960 model year, the triple rear window was replaced with a single wraparound, and the grill was changed from flat-top to arch-top (as seen in the front view of BWT).  For 1961 the engine was pushed out to 2651cc and the Hydramatic transmission became an option; and the lovely big oval rear lights, with the indicators up in the fin ends, were deleted in favour of the smaller and more anonymous units worn by VTC.  As you can see the bumper ends also had to be modified.  So BWT should have the same lights as VTC, not as SSK.

Edit: BWT's grille lip should be chrome-plated, not painted to match the bonnet.  By the combination of lights and screen, SSK is a 1960 model.

The VTC rear end is easily the least successful, if I was lumped with that I'd probably build a BWT too.  I hadn't realised there were quite so many differences between them, or why.

The one I owned was a VTC, but easily my fave would be SSK.  It would have to have the 1961-spec running gear though, and the front indicators, which are different to the 60.  BWT's front lights are correct.

but I think that it is actually the Lanchester Light Six (12hp RAC) not the ten.

Straight six engine of about 1400cc, fluid flywheel and Knight type pre-selector gearbox.

Aimed firmly at the middle class comfort and ease to drive market.

Slow as a wet week in Bognor, but comfortable.

 

(I have a couple of its cousins, the BSA 10).

You may well be right, apparently the 10 and 12 shared the same body but the 12 had a bigger engine (as the number suggests :) )  It is ofen difficult to sort out the different models of pre-war cars, Austins somettimes shared the same body (eg 1937 12 and 14) and Standard must have developed Audi's photocopier for them ;)
