Three wheel mopeds

Recommended Posts

There are a lot of these in France, the ones with 2 wheels at the front. I wonder why we don't see them in the UK very often. What is the reasoning behind them. Are they any good?

Ive seen traffic wardens in belfast using them.

Think they have all the benefits of a scooter but they can hop on and off without worrying about side stands etc.

They lean, very good at cornering too but not classed as a trike unless it's the extra wide track lt version. Can be locked upright so no feet needed

Surely the reason you don't see them often over here is people have too much pride to be seen on them?

More realistically, they're pretty expensive aren't they? Unless your specific commute had free motorcycle parking but not car parking for Joe blogs, I'm not sure of the advantages over a cheaper normal scooter or a proper bike (abs on bikes has also taken away one advantage from them.)

Try commuting using two wheels on the wet cobbled streets of France ie Paris then you'll know.

I think they look pretty cool. They also seem to have some big engined mopeds over here judging by the number who overtake you on the autoroute.

Good point!

There's loads in London. I'm intrigued and like the idea of some extra safety but ultimately they seem a bit bulky.

One day I might give in and get an auto with ABS but I think that's as far as I'd go.

The BSA is always the winner in these stakes, super slow, unreliable and laughed at by everyone, but I love it!!

Some of them aren't quite mopeds. Piaggio and Gilera made 400 and 500cc versions. I've actually ridden one, a Piaggio MP3 400; it was great in wet weather, filtered well, good weather protection, decent storage and was quick enough.

Would I own one? Probably not, but certainly not because I'd be arsed about what Real Bikers think - they're expensive, and the added mechanical complexity of the tilting/steering system would put me off. If I ever found I couldn't ride a normal scooter anymore, though, I would certainly consider one before resorting to the front of a bike welded to the back of a car.

One other advantage* is that the MP3 400LT and, I think, one that Peugeot make can be ridden on a car licence.

My brother had one as a courtesy bike last year sometime when he had his Yamaha Fazer serviced.  He did not like the handling or the steering, probably because he had only ridden motorcycles before. It apparently went well enough for commuting, so maybe was around 400cc.

Very popular in London, especially the 400 LT's that through some clever bugger at Piaggio has worked out the distance between the front wheels means it can be ridden on a full car licence. Tfl don't like it as they can't implement the congestion charge on it (no front number plate).

There's a lot of snobbery from "bikers" against them for some reason, and maxi scooters in general. They are a little more stable than two wheels, and are easy to adapt your riding to, but you can still crash them easily enough.

I know a lad who has one, only got a car licence, so this is ideal with a big engine, he loves it anyway :)

maybe the £7.5k price ticket price puts people off

I see one regularly in Rotherham.

The only reason  I can see for owning it is the fun he has in the winter. One set of lights is on a side slope & always slippery, I regularly see him nail it off the line & travel up the road rather sideways right across the junction, try doing that on 2 wheels without a lot more skill.

DONT BUY ONE WITHOUT A V5C

these dont have a frame number stamped, they have a sticker with the vin number on, which fades and falls off. without it you will not have much luck getting a replacement logbook.

Interestingly, while waiting for the seller to get back to me I came across this link via a Pistonheads thread which has worked a treat for everything I've tried. Entering the registration number of the moped brings up a six digit VIN/Chassis number along with a registration date of 01/04/1971.

Good to know, alas those bikes I have without frame numbers (4 of them :( ) I have tried and everyone fails. Its the old story of if it was not on the DVLA system then it isn't going to be found using that link :)

BUT its good for those that were listed but no V5C is found cheers for that

So if you bid the likelihood is that you will get a V5C

you could experience the  sheer terror at 20 mph

I seem to recall someone on another forum managing to find out enough info to reregister one via the owners club.

Got several of these 3 wheel scoots near me, always take me a bit by surprise when I see them on the road! Don't want to own one but would like to have a go just for the experience.

A curious design which raises so many engineering questions that having an exposed chain right next to your tootsies pales in to insignificance.

Not technically a moped of course, but this seems eminently more suitable as a more-wheeler.....

There are quite a few of those twin front wheeled invalid chairs kicking about in this area, which can only mean four things:

- They are shiny shit from China

- They are expensive

- They are a fashion gag for loaded hoodies

- There won't be any next year
