The LWB version is long enough for a camp bed to fit in

LWB version?? That's only mk3 Caddy.
Posted

Aye. Only shortarses need apply. I slept in the back of my Mk2 Caddy on a mat of dog blankets when things with my ex became untenable, it was okay.

I didn't know that. My ex has a '59 plate LWB Caddy & we both slept in that when at a piss up with loads of spare room.

Yeah that's a mk3 or a 2k Caddy, I have an 08 but mines a pineappled SWB but we'll not talk about that. Much prefered my old mk2 caddy same thing as LP's Inca, good vans.

I've been having a bit of a war with the gearbox recently, it was getting stuck in third and most recently it was down to only selecting 4th and 5th. Ideal for burning the clutch.

Changing the grim gearbox oil was a last ditch attempt but it seems to have cured* it, third is still a bit tricky but the rest of the gears seem fine. Small petrol/SDI VAG gearboxes are notoriously shit.

Inspried* by the gearbox fix* I chipped off the ship-wreck style rust and removed the o/s front hub to have a new bearing pressed in. The mechanic had a bit of a fight with my £11 wheel bearing but at least it's not howling any more.

The coil spring, at least on the driver's side, seems to be chopping itself. It wants* pineappling.

Isn't there a 'thing' with gearbox linkages on that era of VAG stuff?

Posted

The rod-type linkage seems fine, there's a little slack in it but I think something inside the gearbox has gone awry.

Crikey, that gear oil must have been in there for most of the car's life !!!

Posted

Aye, I've never seen gear oil so manky.

I changed the gear oil again after my friend gave me some, same shit with it getting stuck in third. Just avoid third, it's fine, especially* for uphill overtakes at low speed.

How irritating ! I suspect it's time to start looking for a new box (or, if you're a cop-out like me, a new car).

If I had any motivation at all.  :-( I take it for a drive now and again but my enthusiasm has waned, it doesn't need that much work really.

Get the finger ooot boyo! Get it running, bring it to Crail and we can choon it up!

The Inca van was GASSING stopped traffic behind it with clouds of unburnt fuel, and the sump oil level is increasing again so I had to do something about it. Grey smoke & fuel in the sump = bad injectors.

A set of injectors were liberated from the spares van.

The ones in the Inca were really horrible, caked in stoor and soot, no wonder it was running badly at idle. I gave the Caddy injectors a wee clean and fitted them, it's much improved now, just a wee puff of grey smoke at idle, smoother running and better acceleration.

Seems daft to spend time on such a shitbox, rustbucket van with a missing third gear but it feels like it wants to keep going, if I can keep it reliable and safe for next to nowt I will keep doing that.

It amuses me that unlike the mk3 polo/seat whatever it was, where they got different front end metalwork (possibly just on the saloon, I think the hatch was a significantly different car?), these you just got what's quite obviously a Seat front end and you were happy with it.

Ignore me, all total bollocks. 6n hatch and mk2 ibiza shared a platform but no body panels, polo saloon and estate were rebadged Cordobas that may or may not have had different front end metalwork.

The SEAT Inca, Cordoba and Ibiza, VW Polo saloon and estate are related, the front end looks similar to the 6n Polo but is a bit different in order to fit bigger engines, the front end shares a lot with the Golf Mk2 and SEAT Toledo. The dashboards are identical.

It'll be more closely based on the 6K then, which when parked next to a 6N is subtly but noticably actually a completely different shape. I quite like the dash in them, it's got a nice handy table in it and is nice soft mdf type stuff great for screwing in phone holders and USB ports and whatnot.

MoT test today. I think it might need a lot of love but we'll see. The tester can be alternately lenient and strict.

Also here's a pic of the Argentinian facelift Caddy, neat eh? Only available with the old indirect injection 1.9D till the late 2000s.eb75823dc07f2ad980b8184fbcdd52cd.jpg3a9b815a87c67f743345967da7c4aeb0.jpg9d78c4c8faa2a48def9bcc384615a25f.jpg

That's not too bad a fail list tbh:)

Question is whether to expend the energy on the Inca or to get the blingooo boosting legally

Posted

It's been such a faithful friend that I don't want to get shot of it for the sake of a couple of tyres, brake consumables and a wheel bearing. Possibly only £60 in parts if I can get the wheels off the spare van.
