Stationary Engines - talk to me

Recommended Posts

When I got my 2 (as part of a scrap clearance) I kept them as the price of scrap was low at the time. Painted them (badly) mounted them on wooden trolleys (badly) and tried to connect one to a saw bench (dangerously) in the hope of using it in the unit to cut up planks of wood.

It never really worked for me, but I did get to keep all my fingers.

They still get fired up occasionally and just fart for an hour or so while I tinker with other tat. Quite therapeutic!

What were they used for originally? Can't someone do that?

They were frequently used around farms in the days before electricity was common, eg for chaff cutting, corn grinding, wood-sawing etc. I've also seen a large one driving a stone-crushing plant so the must have been used in quarries as well. Unfortunately none of these activities involve toy ducks swimming around in buckets, so pumping it has to be :(

For some unknown reason I bought a Petter engine about 4 years ago, struggled getting the bloody thing home in the back of a borrowed Astra estate, cranked it up and watched it putter away to itself a few times then put it under a tarpaulin where it remains to this day......

For the princely sum of ONE ENGLISH POUND my local council tip were more than happy that I take away this fine piece of engineering today (along with three mowers, two of which fully working and one TBC for £3 each)

I tried to join a stationary engine forum but the email is taking forever to come through, in the mean time anyone here know what it is? The only marking on it says '86-13 AM'. It clearly lacks a carb, fuel tank, magneto, and possibly other things but turns over fine by hand and does have some compression after holding my hand over the exhaust and feeling the pressure on the exhaust stroke. Oil is clean and up to the mark.

I cleaned it off with a wire brush and its sat in the garage now. I'd like to fix it up really. Weights a flipping tonne though - easily 40kg and half the bits are missing. Step 1 will be looking for something with wheels to mount it to.

...it says '86-13 AM'...

The only help I can provide is that the clock isn't working correctly.

Neither is the radio up to date....

Seriously, though, AM could refer to Air Ministry (RAF) if it looks non-factory applied.

One of my mates used to have not one, but two Napier Deltic engines set up to provide backup power, hooked to a massive lead acid battery bank at their place of work.

Hearing those start up an rev up to speed must have been something else. You'd not be able to see anything of course due to the clouds of smoke covering the entire county for several minutes though...

Thanks, looking at Google image results you may very well be right!

I have always been a fan of little industrial engines like this.

When I saw the photographs I thought it looked like a JAP to me, but would expect to see those letters cast into the crankcase somewhere, so may indeed be a Villiers, but not sure of the model. Looks bigger than a C12 or 15.

There is a little platform under the exhaust outlet on which a magneto might have originally been fitted. Is there a drive coupling visible on that side?

Ok so assuming it is a C12 or similar then there is a missing fuel tank on the not-spark-plug side which mounts to a little bracket and has check straps that go over the top to keep it in place. Then there is a magento under the tank with an HT lead to the spark plug on top.

Finally, there is a carb which may go on a intake pipe to keep it away from the exhaust and a fuel pipe from the tank to the carb.

Where I used to work we had numerous different stationary diesel engines used as emergency back ups for water pumps and such. Best though was the emergency power generator which was a Proteous jet engine. You knew when they were test running it !

I have a 1967 Villiers engine that came off my 1967 lawnmower (replaced with a boring Honda).

After help on a stationary engine forum it turns out it is a BSA 320cc Model A and is missing the carb, magneto, fuel tank and straps. I've been told what I need to source, so now the process of assembling the bits I need before fitting them.

I'm quite looking forward to it really, once running I think I'll set it up to run a little generator or alternator or something electrical.

I'm finding myself wanting another, but for an actual use,in my case to run a saw bench up the top of the garden,my dad still has an Amanco open crank and a few others my grandad also has a 1/4 scale open crank that he built (fully working).

I used to be a Petter M 2 stroke fan,if I can find one for cheeps that might be the plan:-)

Well, I have an offer for a fuel tank, brackets and straps for £40 which isn't too bad, but apparently the carbs are shared with a lot of other stuff and have a rep for being a bit fragile so are quite hard to find. Got recommended to a chap who sells all manner of carbs but he wants the thick end of £300 for a refurb one (as i don't have an exchange unit) which is a smidge more than I'd like to pay.

Anyone know any bods who might have a working Solex 26FHD carb they would be willing to sell? Or failing that an Amal 124 type with a 26mm barrel?

I'm going to buy a stationary engine mag this weekend to see what info I can glean from it. I shall wear my flat cap to mark the occasion.

Could you bodge a bike carb from a similar power output engine on? might be easier to find at autojumbles etc.

Potentially it may have to come to that - what might be a concern is that (and I'm guessing here) a bike is deigned for power output at high-ish revs, whereas my stationary engine puts out its eye-watering 6bhp at 2200rpm which is governed so would they play nicely together?

The other thing that crossed my mind is that I have a scrap B&S 5hp mower engine with a good carb on it which I might try and remove and fit up over the weekend.

Posted

I doubt the revs would matter tbh, you only need 'so much' air for 6bhp so an early bantam carb would be about the right size for example. And still an Amal for the right look. That mower one sounds ok though.
