106 immobilized HELP?

Recommended Posts

I drove into work fine this morning, apart from the back box snapping off this journey went well.

However, I was asked to move the car as technically we are not meant to park on premises at the weekend.

When I went to start the car, I got dash lights and the volt gauge shows loads of volt but when I turn the key, i get nothing. Dash lights dim but engine doesnt try to turn over.

Immobilsor light flashes until you put the key in, then turns off when you put the key in the ignition.

Car needs moved today.

Any geniuses have any ideas? Ive tried a couple of things that Google has thrown up (twatting steering column shroud, wiggling key) but to avail.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Sure it's not your battery? It could have collapsed inside.

Will it bump?  I think the immobiliser acts on the pump and not the starter.

Is this that early 1.4d one? It must be an aftermarket immobiliser if the engine's not turning over because any OE ones work on fuel not starter.

Is there a separate fob for the immobiliser? On that year if it had an OE immo it would have been a keypad one.

This, I would get a jump start or a different battery on it the first thing, it's the most logical place to start, good luck :-)

Dash lights dim, battery fault?... perhaps solenoid if they don't dim much? Either way a bump should sort it - and if it doesn't, get your friendly colleagues to continue attempting to bump start it until it's off the company premises.

Sounds like the immobiliser is turning off which is good, otherwise you would be knackered.

When I saw your initial thread and saw the volt meter I was wondering if it had reliability issues with its electrics somewhere.

Being an old school diesel, there can only be so many electrical problems with it.

Loose battery connection. Or duff starter/solenoid.

Highly* unlikely to be battery if it started just fine last time.

Can't you just pick it up and put in your pocket?

Sounds like battery is the first place to look.

Will give it a go after work. On shift atm.

no keypad. Just transponder key I guess?

When turning over does the voltage level drop?

The engine doesnt turn over at all but turning the key drops the voltage from markedly. From 13 down to 5 from memory.

Clean up the quick release positive clamp. They are wank. Had to do it before.

Cheers man. Will have a look on my dinner break.

Just had this in my t5. All the lights etc work but go to start it and the computer says no. New battery and normal service was resumed.

Didn't that 405 have a similar issue, Ben? Seem to remember that was starter related

I don't think so man.  Though my memory isn't the best.

12.39 is fairly flat ish TBH.

A knackered battery can show plenty of volts but won't have the amps to back it up when you crank.

What voltage does it show when you're turning the key? Any less than 9 and the battery is knackered.

That's OK (should be nearer 12.5 - 12.6V ideally) when not loaded, you need to check the volt drop when the starter is run (or put the lights full on, fan & HRW etc on), you may find the battery voltage drops to about half this when loaded up. That'll likely be your starting problem if that's the case.

Modern batteries are generally excellent but they do tend to crap out quite suddenly rather than die slowly as old ones do so don't be fooled by the fact it started OK earlier on.

Aye, bear in mind 12v is the same as you get from a PP3 and a couple of AAA batteries but they won't start a car.

^it was in the car.  And flat.

Anyway, the battery was fucked like everyone said.  The alternator is also shagged as its not charging.  So thats me back to square 1.
