Station Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Sorry, none shite, but well done to Alfa Romeo for actually producing a car that looks DIFFERENT! The car actually looks quite cool in the skin:
Milford Cubicle Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 They are horrible, they look so bulbous for a small car.
carlo Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Got a rotten road test in Autocar recently, not that that magazine is as good as it used to be.
reallyloud Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I had a good look at these at an Alfa dealer recently. Its like a tomb inside and reversing it looks impossible due to the poor rear visability. Compared to the 156/157 is not as pretty but no doubt will appeal to those bored with the BMW mini. I get annoyed with this desire for car manufacturers to have these overwhelming 'graphics'. An air intake shouldn't be the main feature of a car - I don't want to drive a fish. I reckon if the car had been badged as a hyundai, kia or some other underwhelming brand, then it there would be some severe grilling, or even worse just ignored in the press. A shame that this is the so called blood-successor of the sud.Verdict: buy an expired 166 for the same money.
pogweasel Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 It looks like a parrot. I am scared of parrots. I'll take an Alfa sud and 1000 gallons of dinitrol pls.
reallyloud Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I'll say one thing about Alfa Romeo though. The girls they use at the motorshow are near perfect.
VWPowered Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I'll take an Alfa sud and 1000 gallons of dinitrol pls.cant beat a sud....
Milford Cubicle Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 An air intake shouldn't be the main feature of a car - I don't want to drive a fish. Are you sure?
r.welfare Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I see a yellow MiTo often around here - the colour really doesn't flatter it in my opinion. Sure it's an OK car, but as you can get a Grande Punto for 35p (which it's based on) why would you bother?
garethj Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I never really liked the muscle-bound style of cars, big wheels, huge arches, tiny windows... I'm sure they're all marvellous for having a crash in but try turning your head when you reverse and there's sod-all visibility and it all feels claustrophobic. There's a bloke at work with a Triumph Herald, the roof pillars are so slim there's barely room for paint on them - much more elegant.
Justin Case Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 They are horrible, they look so bulbous for a small car.Agreed, especially about the front end. The Grande Punto does it so much better, I fear Alfa are trying too hard and didn't know when to stop
Negative Creep Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Gives me no pleasure to say it looks vile. What were they thinking?
Mr Lobster Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I really want to like it. But I just can't get past the looks unfortunately.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I'll take an Alfa sud and 1000 gallons of dinitrol pls.cant beat a sud.... Wow, an early 1200 four speed. What a pretty little thing they were as well, so perfectly judged in every respect. Spot on proportions and just the right amount of detailing. They were a fabulous thing to drive as well and I reckon you could relaunch it today and it would still get rave reviews.Everything Alfa made after this was a turd although oddly enough, the basic 1200 Arna was a very good driving car. Ugly though. The MiTo is a heavy, ugly looking sack of shit based on a crap Fiat and built in a Fiat factory. I've yet to read a positive road test, so it looks like another spectacular own goal. The Sud was a fluke, designed by an Austrian. Normally Alfa Romeo would have trouble designing a bike without square wheels. Alfa DNA my arse. I'll take a Fiesta thanks.

Vin Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 The Sud was a fluke, designed by an Austrian.Yeah he's a well known Austrian, goes by the name of Giorgetto Giugiaro
dollywobbler Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Got a rotten road test in Autocar recently, not that that magazine is as good as it used to be.I guess that was because it wasn't an Impreza/Evo...
fiatdaft Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 to be honest,do we give a hoot what the motoring press, that may or may not be getting back handers realy think about cars?
outlaw118 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Err.... I quite like it to be honest - theres a black one round my way, and yes, it's "different", it's not as offensive to me as the blandness option....
Rocket88 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Got a rotten road test in Autocar recently, not that that magazine is as good as it used to be.It's typical of Alfa that the car they gave to Autocar to test drive was a non British spec, pre production lash up. Since that road test Autocar have done ANOTHER roadtest with the car that Alfa are actually going to sell over here, and it was a bit more complimentary. As for the Sud, great idea, built by a totally disinterested work force, out of steel from old Russian battleships that had been lying on the ocean floor for about elevnty billion years.............so that was going to work then
gtd2000 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I think it's a very cool looking little car but I'd never buy one coming from Italy of course...Strangely enough there are quite a few current Italian cars that I actually like the look of - the Grande Punto is one of them - just how bad are these cars really?Another older model I like is the Stilo hatchback - I'm firmly an Asian car buyer and expect reliability as a standard feature...so no doubt they would only disappoint?
gtd2000 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Forgot to mention the new Ford Ka - how will that stack up being based on the Fiat 500?
Justin Case Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Everybody's right Hruska did the oily bits, Giugiaro did the styling: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_Romeo_Alfasud Rather like that Giardinetta, havenever seen one in the flesh, though.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 When are alfa gonna relaunch the 33 sportwagon with half-arsed selectable dog-clutch 4wd, thats what I wanna know, my chequebook is waiting!
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 speaks the voice of wisdom there ^, me thinks not,Speaks the humourless little Man who STILL cannot begin a sentence with a capital letter! The Alfasud was designed by Rudolf Hruska and styled by Giugiaro. Hruska not only designed the Sud, but took overall responsibilty for the Sud factory as well. Alfa press releases spelt his name as Rudolfo......The Grande Punto is a heap of shit that is beset with problems. A very good mate of mine recently moved from a Fiat dealer after 11 years. The Punto horror stories are absolutely horrendous with a porous block that literally sweats its coolant being a prime example. The only decent car Fiat make is the Panda, primarily because it's made by the Poles and not Italians. that's got to be a good thing!Alfasuds were not made from old battleships. They were made from regenerated steel with a very high carbon content as were most Italian heaps back then.

Nope. The 33 brakes thing was my mistake.Yours was wasting several thousand pounds on a pile of fast depreciating Italian rubbish. But as they say, a fool and his money are soon parted! :DOh, and 'Abarth' my arse. It's a nice badge on a crap Fiat shopping cart. 'Abortion' would be more fitting..........
