Peugeot 306 - 2nd Key Required

Hey.

I'm going round and round in circles here.

Just picked up the extraordinarily yellow 306 cabrio.  Being something I'd like to keep a long time, I'm picking off the jobs quickly in a bid to aid bonding.

I've only the one key - and would like a second.  I thought I'd be a proper grown up about things for once, and decided to call Peugeot.  Of course, they are happy to oblige and provide me with a 2nd blipper key.  Â£156.02 plus £59.40 to code it.  I can't remember what he said about VAT.

Now, if that's what it is - then that's what it is.

BUT.  Being rational.  Perhaps just a back up key without the remote will be fine.  Of course it still needs to have the transponder in it for the immobiliser.

What are my options?  I don't really want to arse around buying a blank from ebay, then sending it off to Abdul in Hounslow to code to send it back to take it to Uncle Tom Cobley the local cobbler to cut.

Are there any other straightforward options for people, like me, who are time poor and a bit tight?

Bornite, where are you? A lot of key cutters and locksmiths have the machines to both cut and code keys, provided they have the static codes - the dynamic ones are a dealer-only job I think.

I've had a new key cut and coded for a 1996 Punto, 2003 Yaris and something else, all at local key cutting places or cobblers and for <£15 including the blank.

If you are near Andover then my father-in-law can certainly assist.

***edit*** these were plain, non-blipper, keys though, having read your post properly. if you can get a blipper and match it with the RCL then cutting and coding should be able to be done by anyone within reason.

If you've got the ECU security code, you can code the keys yourself using PP2000 / Lexia (the dealer diag software) if you know anyone that's got it?

If you don't have the ECU security code, there's a company that can supply it for £20 or so (Google should bring it up) or you can get it from Peugeot for rather more.

You can re-code an old 2nd hand key as well so that it'll start the car, but often you'll struggle to get the remote central locking part re-coded on an old key for some reason.

The key itself can be re-cut by anyone, as it's the same blank that's been used on loads of 80's/90's era French cars. Local place did mine no issues.

PS. The keys changed in 1999 from IR to RF locking, so make sure you get the right one for your car.

Thanks, but that's ball-ache ahoy.  I've become one of those PH wankers who now has to put a price on his time too.  IKR.  I've changed.  What a wanker.

This is the radio frequency one from what I can gather.  Will it have an alarm too?  ie if I lock it with the blipper, will I have to unlock it with the blipper key too to avoid the alarm?

Just to clarify (according to my manual) the IR remotes can be manually coded yourself.

Yep If codes can be coded manually,

All the remote keys set and reset the alarm via the remote locking. Locking the door lock via the drivers door doesn't.

To get a spare key cut and coded with a new transponder chip is pretty straightforward. You can't recode used Rf remote units successfully. Its either gamble getting a Chinese copy blank key and Virgin Ff unit off the bay or cut your losses and head to the stealers and get it coded elsewhere provided you've got the required coding code.

It is very annoying.....I've been there and got the ticket twice now on each if my Cabriolets.....8-)

Some Timpsons branches can do remote keys, I believe they are meant to be around 20% cheaper than main dealers.

Also there are car remote key replacement specialists who are basically guys who are mobile and drive round in a van fully stocked up with all sorts of key blanks, remote key fobs and so on, genuine parts so I'd assume they buy in bulk from main dealers for a hefty discount, and they are reasonably priced, Google them or yell.com

Dealers price on labour sounds about right if that's an hours labour price, even though it takes around 10mins to do. They still charge the full hour. The price for the key should be around half that, it's only about £80 for a VW or Vauxhall flippy key fob so a fixed head Pug remote should be no more than that. You should also have a credit card style thing with a code on it which you will need for new keys, my 2002 206 had one and I believe all earlier Pugs did too.

Do you have key cover on your insurance?

If so then if you lost* your keys then you can get another made.

Haha! Brilliant.

They're gonna love me. Zero no claims to lose and i'mma be after a windscreen and a key!

I really hope it's on the policy!

Doesn't effect your ncb as effectively are separate policies.

I took it out for the vel satis as was £20 and I don't want to lose* the key card.

I suspect (as with most motors) all existing keys are deleted before (re)adding all new ones...

Timpsons are good, my local is a kiosk outside my local Tesco less than a mile away. Went in asking for a key for my R8, they didn't have the right blank but the guy knew that a different one would work - it was a different version of the same key (but more substantial and less bendy(!)) with an immobiliser chip that the guy just didn't bother programming as he didn't need to. Did it for £8-10 iirc, don't know if it costs more if they need programming.

It was going to be £40 at Timpsons for a new key for my Volvo but the machine wouldn't copy the chip despite the computer saying it would.

I thought you meant an Audi R8!  Then I remembered where I am.

I think I'm going to start here.  Apparently only some of them can do the full fat keys, so I'll try one of them asap.

post-20451-0-31272900-1488879581_thumb.jpgis it a key like this , this one off my old faithful friend Peugeot 406, its got all the electronic gizmo inside which with the code for yours is a breeze to re program, the metallic key bit is normally only a couple of quid to get re-done,  if of use, yours for the price of a 2nd class stamp

If it's a late 306 RF key it'll look like this:

I don't know whether the 306 and 406 keys are electrically compatible with one another - the transponder part might be, the remote part probably not would be my guess. The key blank itself is different as 406's use the later style lock design whereas 306's use the earlier design, similar to 205's, 405's etc.

It's one of these.

Timpsons can do me a non remote one for £60 - or if I wait until they get new kit at the end of the month, a blipper for £160.  At that price, I'd just be paying the extra £50 at Peugeot I think.

From what the dude was saying, the key is actually programmed in the car (which I guess is a series of events like turning the key three times, opening the door, farting and cupcaking your passenger, turning the key again and starting the car whilst pushing the horn.  So I'm off to do a bit of digging before coughing up.
