PayPal. Pay after delivery

There's a classic I'm interested in. It's in north Scotland. The seller has offered to me at a price I'd be willing to take a punt on it blind.

He suggested that he'd be happy with Paypal. Pay after delivery.

Anyone have experience of this. Or is it just a super complicated scam

Pay after delivery is offered to me by PayPal every time I buy on ebay.

I usually change it to pay now by visa, and payment is instant.

If I forget to change it, the item still arrives and I am emailed by PayPal at a later date to say the money is leaving my bank account.

Would check on how to cancel payment, Google it, but probably ok to do.

If he will wait for payment is likely genuine.

Have just googled, and it seems PayPal pay instantly for the item. They then bill you in 14 days.

So he draws straight away, your argument would be with paypal if anything went wrong.

Not the safeguard it sounds.

Paypal still pay the seller - but its easier to reverse the payment if there are any problems.

Dont ask me how it works but I vaguely remember the email from them yonks ago about it.

He is a lunatic to offer Paypal as a way of paying for a car as eBay will refund you if you don't like it and leave him in the shit. As a buyer I can't see a problem though.

As above - it's a PITA for keeping track of your bank account/finances. Seller is paid instantly but you don't pay PayPal for two weeks. It's only OK if you need a tideover on something you need urgently really. Doesn't seem to be a way to pay PayPal sooner which is a bit daft too.

Click that and it says visa, which I use, and direct from your account, or something similar.

I would'nae Pay by paypal for a car unless the rules have changed. Perhaps a deposit, but ye need to  get someone to have a gander at the motor.

I meant when you pay after delivery, you can't speed the process up; it always takes two weeks to take the payment. You can't say 'it's here now I'll pay thanks'.

Aside from buying a car blind, if you're happy to take the risk, I don't see a problem as you're the buyer - would you do it if he asked for cash upfront or a bank transfer?

 

I buy stuff all the time off ebay with this paypal defferment, never had an issue aside from forgetting that there is monies coming out and relying on seemingly "healthy" bank balances

 

I would attempt to convince the guy you're a genuine seller and to pay in cash on collection, maybe with a paypal deposit which in extreme circumstances you can afford to write off?

Pretty sure in Paypals T&Cs it's not to be used to pay for vehicles. As stated before the seller will get paid instantly, they just charge you for it later. If I was a scammer that would be plenty of time to get the cash into different accounts etc before you realise they aren't delivering

If you can get someone to check the car over first then paypal is fine just use a credit card as you will have comeback if the worst happens. Saying that I just sent a bloke 800 quid for a Rolls Royce paid by bank transfer. The car is currently on it's way and will hopefully be ok. I am a bit of a trusting person though having bought a few cars from France blind just sending the payment and hoping the thing arrives in one peice at some point. Touch wood so far I haven't come unstuck yet.

This is the first I've heard of this, but might explain why PayPal transactions seem to take ages to come out of my account recently

Yeah, as above...its just an option in your Paypal payment screen.   I find it useful.   You can keep a track on it in your Paypal Account Overview where it shows all the payments still to come out.   You can also over-ride it when paying for something on Ebay although occasionally it goes straight through with it - an example of the annoying clumsiness of the Paypal/Ebay systems.    

 

It has absolutely no effect on the seller unless they are coaxing you into buying something by pointing out you can defer the payment. 

 

Have to agree, though, it is a pisser when you get to payday and find about £75 goes out of your account because you forgot the stuff you bought two weeks ago and the other caveat is if you buy something and get a refund - for example under-stocking or combined postage - you get the refund straight away but the full amount is still deferred.
