Odd insurance questions

Has anyone had any weird questions when getting insurance quotes?

I've been looking for car insurance and Hertz asked if I was going to travel to Europe to take part in   " A BANGER RALLY ".    What the f....

Might give them a ring monday and see where this sort of thing goes on. Sounds ever so interesting. Has anyone heard of this pastime?   Wondering how much extra it would cost if I said  "ye, regularly".

Maybe its something to do with sausages or small fireworks.

Banger rallies started out as people going on massive adventures to Dakar or Unlaan bator and the like in completely unsuitable old cars like 2CVs and Maxis, and it has degenerated into buying a '98 vectra from ebay, covering it in astroturf and driving to Barcelona while dressed as the Blues Brothers, doing "wacky" challenges on the way.

While it is technically just a european holiday and would have been covered on a normal policy, insurers are probably clamping down on them using excuses like motorsport, for reward, competition etc et....just another way to screw money out of people.

Here's a portion of my motorcycle certificate under Limitations as to use the last bit seems to have been tacked on just in case you didn't understand the words before it (my highlighting).

This policy does not cover user for any trade, business or profession, or use for any purpose in connection with the motor trade or use for hire or reward, racing, pacemaking, speed testing, competition, rallies, trials or track days or use on the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

My car policy also specifically excludes the Nurburgring

Is that a new thing then as I've always fancied a drive round the ring to see what all the fuss is about.

i went around the ring on my fz1s [i was returning from the med].

When i got back i read the t&cs in my insurance and it specifically excluded the ring. good job i never took out the 911 i was chasing!

It seems to have cropped up in the last 10 years or so, where a trip to the ring has become a much more popular thing.

Yeah, technically its just a toll road, but insurers are not dumb and they know the chances of someone stacking it on the ring are massively higher than any other road in Europe, so many now specifically exclude it. They also know that incidental costs after even a minor shunt on the ring like armco repairs or being billed for downtime while the track is closed to clean a spill can rapidly spiral into five or six figures so its in their interests as profit-making companies to avoid the risk.

If I were going to the ring, I would be buying ring-specific trackday insurance, as the thought of me getting way out of my depth and stacking it into some poor sods supercar would be a massive worry.

My moped insurance, from the early 1980's, specifically excluded MP's (or people standing for Parliamentary Election) from using their mopeds whilst campaigning for election.

This always intrigued me  - which MP claimed for damage to their moped during a particularly heated debate?
