In other news I did some scrapyard raiding today so it now sports a fuel cap, OEM front floormats, a handbook & folder, a rear ashtray, a load cover and some other bits and pieces which were missing

LIKE. I like seeing/adding OEM things to cars that have them missing. My BMW has had this treatment as has Ma_Sterling's Micra and of course my Rovers.

We end the day awaiting a clutch release bearing from our partners at SVM HQ, Taggarts Volvo Maryhill.

Your snowfoam mix is shit

It's the dregs in a barrel of AutoSmart TFR... got a fresh barrel of snowfoam but couldn't be arsed moving it nearer the wash.

On November 12th 1987, my 740 Turbo rolled off the forecourt at Philp Volvo in Paisley.

On January 21st 2017, it returned under it's own power.

After 30 years the car still looks brilliant. The dealership not so much!

Excellent! How does the car perform?

It pulls like a train! That said, the gearbox is pretty obstructive, first can be a bit of a bastard to select and overdrive is currently a little sketchy but it actually drives really well; it's only got 119k on the clock and has had loads spent underneath over the years so it seems in fairly good order. I still need to adjust the clutch up still but that can wait until during the week.

Lit up it's back tyres in second going up a medium incline. Forgot I wasn't in the Council Estate which does slow down considerably on hills.

I am amazed the Philp building is still standing. It must have been like that for 10 years plus? Good location too. You'd think it'd be flats by now.

It lay derelict from maybe 2002 until about 2013, then they put a Costcutter in it. It closed in 2015 and moved down the road so it's been empty over a year again now. I expect it'll be flats before long too.

I hope to sample a 740 or 940 with a full pressure turbocharger one day, as The Wentworth was pretty rapid, even though it was a 2-litre LPT Dogmatic and was more or less an end-of-life vehicle; I imagine that a well-sorted 2.3 Turbo Intercooler with a manual gearbox would give quite a few Bavaritards a shock

That's what The Volvo does...

... it works! HUZZAH!

That said the rev counter is senile, but bizarrely all the other gauges read spot on - including the fuel gauge, trip counter and odometer.

Rev counter connection on the back of the alternator was known for it if memory serves.

I have always fancied a Turbo, when I worked for a Volvo dealer I had use of a white manual estate for 10 days and it was great.

Back in the day they were fast-accelerating cars without much competition really in the estate class; the Sierra 4x4 estate was smaller, no Granada or BMW estates at that time, Carltons stopped at 2-litres and Mercs with big engines were hugely pricey.

Doing pre-test checks on the Council Estate as well (due in two weeks) show an exhaust blow, a duff connection on a brake light and a slight weep at the steering rack, so thats today's tasks sorted. Hopefully.

... and Baby Jesus the Volvo is a gonner it appears. Looking like over a grand in parts alone so it may well have to just shuffle off it's mortal coil.

DON'T DO VOLVOS KIDS.

"Brake fluid like water", £55, presume that's for a fluid change?

I presume that you haven't the time/appetite to sort some of these things yourself, given other projects that are currently in flight?

Aye, more or less... too much to do, not enough time.

It's a total arse when the clutch fork punches through like that.

Whenever I've got a gearbox out I tend to reinforce the fork with a bit of chopped-off steel tube, as shown here modelled by the one from my Disco 300 TDi:
