I'll try them tomorrow-I work in a school so will tell the local branch we are setting up a car maintenance course.

Did i read the halfords website correctly? It says courier companies and drivers are eligible. So if i take my wage slip, hgv licence, and proof of employment I'm entitled to a card?

Posted

Seems to be.

I have registered with my college account as I may be helping out in the motor vehicle section soon.

Rarely use my card, always ask for discount when I go though. Some things like bulbs can be very cheap. Other things no discount.

I showed the Manager my pay slip. Was actually my pension.

Bought a pack of two stop/tail bulbs today - £3 down to 50p and a H7 headlight £10 down to £2.50 with my trade card - yes they can be had cheaper but Halfords is easy!

I got my trade card from my City & Guilds certificate that i got back in 1998 when i left my college body repair course. My store was quite fussy about it though.

Yes couriers and drivers are entitled. I went in other day and said I'm a one man band man and van. They said here you go. Jobs a good un

Chuck all the tools straight in the bin and use the box to keep your lunch in.

I can just imagine the fit-quality of those open ended spanners......

Actually - its fucking tiny! the drawer is only the depth of a stanley knife cheap box cutter.....too small even for a decent lunch.

Lidl do a tool kit from time to time for about £70, which is pretty comprehensive (better coverage than the Halfords ones) and decent enough quality. Obviously it's not up there with the posh tools but it's not cheese either. If you want to stock up on tools on a budget I'd recommend waiting for one of these.

Interesting. Looks good. What does it cover tbough that the Halfords one doesn't?

The only thing I've really noticed is a lack of mix of extension sizes. Only one size socket iirc.

The Halfords sets have gaps in the spanners and 1/2" sockets, while filling half the box with imperial sockets that most people won't use. I nearly always have to go back to the shed for more tools when I use my 170 piece Halfords set, but the Lidl set seemed to cover everything.

Hey, thats interesting - proper 6 sided sockets, which is very, very rare on most tool sets. The Halfords stuff (which I like and recommend) is all 12point stuff, which is my only real gripe with their stuff.

Im not saying it definitely is, because it could be anything, but those ratchet handles and the allen key/torx bits along the top look very much like stuff here made by Magnusson, which is sold in a big DIY chain which is the same company as B&Q. I think they sell it in UK stores too?. Strangely, its guranteed for life here, but not in UK.

I bought the lidl set about 4 years back. Lost most of it in the van crash but what I've still got and what was in the van still workes/worked after a lot of use.

I've got an RAC branded box which looks suspiciously like the ebay one.

It came from argos about 8 years ago and for occasional use it is fine but it is seriously flimsy in places.

Halfords pro stuff looks as good as you could realistically want.

Spending the national debt of a small country on a Snap on chest is madness.

I've the RAC one, bought in Argos about a decade ago. It's lasted this long and it's better than nothing but the drawers keep coming off the rollers and it's rusty. Plus it's smaller than other cabs, I had to cut the drawer liners that came with my Halfords tools to fit.

Having said that it was on offer at £50 and it's lasted ten years......

Got these yesterday from Halfords-they are the industrial range which have good reviews.  Came as a Black Friday bundle of £350but they emailed me a 10% discount voucher in the week-so all in for about £314.

Bloke said-you haven't got a Corsa have you-as they won't fit. I had the Range Rover and I only just managed to get the boxes in.

Will take me a year to find a space in the garage and to sort out the tools!

You will be fine with those. Don't need much space in the garage if you pile them on top of each other.

All the drawers will be full in no time, will need to buy some more.

When working on a car I'm always losing or looking for tools. My tools are spread around the garage and I can ever find the one I want.

I've been looking to buy a tool cabinet-cannot find any second hand ones nearby.

Found these on the bay.

Any comments or other ideas?

Thanks

Ive one of those cheapo eBay jobbies and its adequate for light home use.

Been in use for a couple of years now and nothing has dropped off  or packed up - the metal though is a bit flimsy.

I just searched 'cabinet' in ebay, nearest first.

Came up with an Ikea office cabinet. Higher than a snap on, obviously wooden, but with a roller shutter top, £13 just down the road.

Now has all my technical* gear in.

Its a lot heavier than you would think.
