Stylish vehicle for the lady driver - Collection today!

I had to search for that - looks great!

Agreed, but Google has now also shown me the Gurgel XEF, and now I want one. It's like a Triumph Acclaim, Opel Kaddett and seventies Mercedes with the seating plan of a Matra Murena meaning there is very little not to like about it.

What about a Mk2 Punto? You can get them for pennies and they are nice and easy to drive and live with. They are really easy to work on too, and spares are plentiful.

Eeesh!!!

Sister in law has one... most hateful car I have ever had the misfortune of driving....

So the Herald appears the Shiters choice, sadly although Mrs_B appreciates them aesthetically she worries Re: reliability, dual carriageways etc...

I was trying to persuade her into a Morris Minor at one point....

Any who. Thanks for the replies... any more experience of any of the three much appreciated.... Yaris is in with a shout. Jazz is a no. Too square.

I saw a Citroen Pluriel on the way home and thought she might like one of those... but that's even worse thana £750 Bini!

Stylish you say?

My wife drives a diesel one of these, it passed all the intangible requirements like looking nice and being the right colour.

They're nice to drive, light steering etc, probably about the same size as a Beetle.

Rear visibility is rubbish but they are VALUE compared to anything from VAG.

How is the Alfa on fuel? I had a spanker as a courtesy car once and assumed it must have got through kwality kontrol with a hole in the tank.

Ms_Q's is a 1.9JTD and does low 40s, not quite as good as the Fabia it replaced but still fine by us.

No idea on the pez ones but got to be 30+ if not ragged?

That's a no then :D I wonder if it helps that ours is a posh version with a sportier engine than the Sporting, I find it quite acceptable to drive.

Glad to know that the Jazz is well thought of on here, as I ended up with one at the weekend in a largely unplanned move... I don't need it, though it is a nice little thing, anyone want a 61 plate 1.4 Jazz with 46k, MOT til May and I'll even put a pair of tyres on the back to replace the really safe looking* originals. I would need £4200 even with shiter's discount mind!

I'd avoid the Beetles having serviced a few, as I guess it'll be you who ends up doing a lot of that. Building a stylish* shell onto the mk4 Golf makes things a right PITA, like changing the pollen filter on the Golf, a 30 second job in the passenger footwell, or a contortionist's act with many lengths of screwdriver to take a dash top panel off on the Beetle. Avoid.

I had a 1.6 (while my 2.4 diesel 156 was being rebuilt from the hubs up serviced). I just remember being stuck in traffic on the M60 watching the range plummet whilst at the same time being reluctant to put anything in it because it was a courtesy car.  That probably gives you a skewed sense of economy, to be fair.

I have a question though - Cat C and Cat D - I'm not bothered as long as it has a decent MOT - but does it make the insurance dearer and / or harder to get?

When I had my written off C4 repaired (so Cat D) some insurance companies wouldn't cover it. Not sure if it's more expensive or not. Unfortunately the compare sites don't have the option to state it's Cat D so you have to ring up anyway to tell them.

Little update on this quest...

The North West was traversed from Buckley to Bootle and Warrington to Whitchurch.

The verdict??? Good grief there's some crap out there for sale!

Heeding the warnings on sub grand Binis we skeptically went and looked at a couple. And yes, they were utter wank!!

We saw one possible Micra amongst the rubbish, but a delve onto the mot history showed up... no history bar one failed test in 2015... that and a few other oddities put us off. Plus I found it quite uncomfortable to be honest!

Beetles didn't really have the learner positives, we didn't look at many.

So the focus shifted, sadly not to Gurgels and we agreed to buy something today....

It has been mentioned but once in this thread (on my very quick glance through) so it's not a Herald (boooo) but has been discussed elsewhere on the site as future Shite potential!

Collection tomorrow...

A live thread, maybe, watch this space!

Some of you will be disappointed...

Some very disappointed!

Neither...

I'll be honest, it's really too new for AS... i.e. It wouldn't get in the ring at Chumley.

But... it could with some fake plates as the design is 90s.

Not that anyone would attempt such a thing....

So yeah, a ford Ka, spent most of its life daaarn sowff. Mostly rust free (couple of minor blebs here and there) and remarkably clean!

Ideal for what we want. I'm really surprised at how it drives, feels better than expected on the road.

And best of all its not silver or black...

Happy days!

Well done finding the one non rusty Ka.

I was behind one today that was very scabby and was a 54 plate.

You're having us on, no Ka is that visibly not-rusty!

As a learner car, rust aside, they are a really good choice.  A very natural successor to the Fiesta really.  Excellent all round visibility, a wheel on each corner, nippy, small, handles neatly and bags of fun potential at very low speeds.  Still able to be DIY repaired too.

Now, go and drive it (carefully) into a swimming pool full of rust preventative solution followed by a thorough coating of wax and/or underseal of choice to keep it as tidy looking as it is now.
