£3500 for this set up....

L10-290 powah and a twin split  8)  hydraulic neck on the trailer too, I'd proper love this, just imagine the fun squeezing those rear tyres round kerbs and the thrill of growling up a hill fully loaded with a steam engine/caravan/landrover on the back in first gear with none left.

As I know there is some love on here (and rightly so) for ERFs, Cummins, Gardner and Fodens and because I like taking photos of Fairground Shite thought I would chuck these up on here, all from the Dormans turn-out at Newbury this weekend. Enjoy.....

Love those 14" (were they 14's or 10s i've forgotten)  headlights on the S80, came off a 180 Gardner engine S40 (S39 mickey mouse before that, bloody nora) and got the Cummins engined S80 PEG334M, 80 far nicer to drive than it looks.

Def not shite but of interest perhaps... my friends lorries at the Hollies cafe a few weeks back -

The Guy runs out of steam at about 50mph or so.

The SA doesn't run out of steam at all.....

Great photo - how did the Guy get what appears to be a B prefix reg plate which would be about 1984?  Or am I confused (more than possible)

^

IIRC, that Guy 'Big J' was stored by its original owner from the mid-1970s until it was needed (and registered) in 1984, hence the 'B' prefix number plate. I would have thought it would have been given an age-related plate.

Posted

I was wondering about that plate as well....By 1984 I thought it was standard practice to issue age-related (or Q plates). Maybe there were different rules for commercials?

Posted

I've seen cars later than that get date-of-registration plates rather than date-of-build. Usually imports, but there was that kerfuffle with the 51 plate Cortina, and on this very forum there's a T registered Mk3 Polo (1991-1994).

I think it depends who was doing the letter opening at the doovla, and how much cheap vodka they'd knocked back the night before.

That Sed Ack got the 14 litre E320 series in it? the little blue badge tells me it has, i'd give me eye teeth to be driving one of those still, run rings round this modern crap and be half way to the next roundabout whilst the modern shit is having a meeting and a vote to decide which gear to select before eventually staggering off causing mayhem at the previous junction, and still; beat them on fuel consumption...progress huh.

Yep - Guy Big J B101SFK.
Fitted with a Gardner 180 and Fuller 9 speed. No power steering - just a steering wheel the size of a dustbin lid -

Built in 1978 and bought by Fordhouses Transport who never actually used it but put it into storage. Cost in 1978 was £11,000, I think.

Fordhouses subsequently ceased trading and the Guy was bought by Thomas Ingles Transport of Wolverhampton. They registered the truck in 1985 (hence the "B" plate), fitted the sleeper conversion, and used it until 1989 when they too ceased trading.

There was also a "Truck and Driver" feature on the lorry in September 1986. The driver of the lorry had previously been driving a Scania 111 - one wonders how much he must've annoyed the boss to have been put in this lorry!!

It has been in preservation since coming out of service in 1992

Yes- that's the one -- a monster -- pulls like a train and no limiter...

With the mega inflation of the late 70's, many lorries were bought before being needed - prices were rising all the time so it was best to buy and store -

This ERF was stored for years too:

Just been pleasantly surprised by this vid, I'm not a regular Dirt Every Day watcher

This is on Fiat's 'historic' youtube channel. Stunts using various Ivecos from 1982...

Intrigued to know how he gets that tractor unit and trailer on '2 wheels'...must have been a hell of a fifth wheel...

I'm surprised that even in 1978 you could still buy a wagon that size with no PAS.

I papped this beast in the centre of Norwich today.

Sanders is a private coach company which is subcontracted to run most of the bus routes in north Norfolk.  I used to use them regularly about 15 years ago and they had a wonderfully eclectic collection of shite buses back then, including a couple of multicoloured early-'80s Leyland Olympians and a surprisingly modern-looking Van Hool 53-seater which was unfortunately sat on a Bedford chassis with a 500 non-turbo engine - on several occasions I witnessed the driver having to change down a gear because of a gusting headwind.

They've now gone all modern and Euro 5 compliant on their bus fleet, but it looks like they've not seen fit to upgrade their recovery vehicle as yet.  If it's one of their 3-axle double deckers that's broken down, I'd expect the 12-mile tow back to base to be completed by some time next Tuesday.

ERF MAKES IT, CUMMINS SHAKES IT! If it's an LT10 or NTE 14 litre, it will make light work of towing any modern, flimsy POS bus 😀

Funny how many wreckers live to a ripe old age and are still working.

I'm defo going to buy an E-series ERF unit one day and either do my test or remove the fifth wheel, or whatever you need to do.

Just do what I bloke I used to work with does - Park it in the front garden and cold start it now and again to annoy the neighbours....
