post office car tax rant / irritation.

I believe that Ordinarily, if one buys a car from another Shitter, one would complete the paperwork so that the car continues to be "owned" by the vendor, until the last day of the month, and one would go online and tax it from the beginning of the next month.

Not so if said car is taxed as disabled.  You have to attend the Post Office

Information on the DVLA website is confusing, and tells you that you must present V5c/2, MOT Cert and Insurance Certificate at Post office.  Now if you've just insured it over the phone you may not have the insurance certificate.

So if you look at the Post Orifice webshite, it is more confusing.

But try asking the People behind the counter:

I was told that I'd need the whole V5C, but insurance and mot they can see on their system.

Now the vendor, probably doesn't want to risk some random bloke off the internet, being trusted with the bit he usually sends off, so I phone the PostOffice and eventually get through to a person, who tells me, you only need the V5c/2 and a V62, for which I will have to pay a fee of £25.  When I protest, he transfers me to the DVLA, who laugh a little, and then tell me, that I need a V5c/2 and a V62, and yes mot and insurance will be online but I do not have to pay the £25 fee.

and they have given me a number to ring, if the post office staff disagree.

Why the fuck is this not something that can be done on line I have no idea.

My work colleagues think I'd crazy, although one is driving me the 3 hours to pick up said barge. and refuses to take a penny. (His commute home is almost past the end of the road)

Ah yeah, I did that on the scenic. However I was cheeky and checked the box on the form to say I hadn't received the new V5. I used the number from the new keeper slip. By doing this, I avoided paying the £25 fee ...

I didn't need an insurance certificate.

Theoretically the following process should apply -

V62 completed in your name and identifying PLG as tax class

V5C/2 with your details on , this waives the £25 fee.

No need for MOT and insurance details, it's just the same as taxing as usual.

At least that's how straightforward it's been for me in the past, I guess it depends who's sat at the counter in the post office!

That's exactly as the nice lady at the DVLA explained it.

Anyway, I'll see thee tomorrow about 6pm, you can help me fill the V62 in !!!!

Used to more of as pain in that you had to go to the DVLA office to change the class, Chester was the nearest or Preston

Thank you. That puts it in perspective.

While I warned people that closure of the local DVLA offices would be a loss to us all, I've never thought the same for the Post Office.  They seem to go out of their way to find thick people to be customer facing, then send them on a special training course so they misinterpret every piece of guidance at their own fingertips.

Because its easier to fine normal folk caught out by needlessly complicated red tape than to do anything about the folk who simply dont bother with tax, insurance or registration.

I would like this a million times if I could - it's always the wrong people getting shafted.

As said it's easier to make an honest man a criminal, than a criminal an honest man

I remember this fun* when my dad lent me his spare car for a year. Every call etc gave a different price to tax it when it came off disabled tax & I needed a trip to Leeds to get the class changed,.

No doubt - but maybe not masquerading as Advanced First World nations.  I used to think France was worse but a few stories are experiences are making me doubt it.  They certainly have a lot of rules and paperwork, but it seems to run a lot better.
