dean36014 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Got a scratch on the windscreen on the passenger side on the ZX. this windscreen polishing kit appeared on ebay and was duly snapped up for £7. Unfortunately it has no instructions whatsoever and my google fu is letting me down. Any ideas how it works? It was a lot bigger than I expected and appears to be a professional bit of kit. There are some weird little pads that attach to the machine, a sponge, and some tubs of glass polish that appears like a powder( and makes a right mess on the floor when you open it up expecting a paste). Some pictures for your delectation.
steveo3002 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 dunno but try detailingworld.co.uk they like that kinda thing
chodweaver Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Found this: http://www.duobond.com/en/our-products/glass-scratch-way/how-it-works and this And if you still don't want it, I'll take it off your hands! dean36014 1
tooSavvy Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Mix powder to a milky solution.. Milkshake not watery. Mark the scratch with a pair / / of lines INSIDE glass with a chinagraph pencil or ladies eye pen. Keep pad very WET... DRY will burn glass!! Use a poondies 1" brush to float compound across glass and polish into the wet smear. Keep pad very WET... It is difficult to see how it is going (fuckkinn mess) but just a quick wipe with your hand or a jiffy cloth and the marks INSIDE show where you are checking. Radial with scratch rather than floor mop circles. KEEP MOVING!! K..P..V..W TS dean36014, DVee8 and Faker 3
dean36014 Posted September 22, 2016 Author Posted September 22, 2016 Thanks Chodweaver, that looks like mine. So looks like fit disc, plenty of water and make a mess. Wonder what the glass polish bit is for. Going to have to try it on a scrap piece of glass before I attempt the windscreen though. If it indeed works it will save me my £60 excess on glass cover and will have been seven quid well spent.
dean36014 Posted September 22, 2016 Author Posted September 22, 2016 Thanks toosavvy, brilliant! Looks like its going to be a messy job. The scratch is quite long, looks like a ring mark across the outside of the screen thankfully. tooSavvy 1
beko1987 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 the windscreen in the green zx was new a year before i got it and only has 3 tiny stone marks on it, swap them over!
dean36014 Posted September 22, 2016 Author Posted September 22, 2016 I broke it attempted to saw it out the frame!
steveo3002 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 anything more than the lightest marks leaves wobbles/ripples like looking through a coke bottle tooSavvy 1
beko1987 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 I broke it attempted to saw it out the frame!fail! sellotape?
dollywobbler Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 anything more than the lightest marks leaves wobbles/ripples like looking through a coke bottle Ah, that explains some oddness on the RAV's windscreen perhaps. Has a distinctly odd point just to the left of where I normally look through.
tooSavvy Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 anything more than the lightest marks leaves wobbles/ripples like looking through a coke bottle I was asked (err..Offered Money£££) by a BMW Dealer to buff out a light chip on a brand new M5 Koop... got the mark when the lad took it to petrol station I masked up & dressed it out.... AND I was a Pro... bastard PleeceOssifer new owner is informed of 'slight mishapp'.... Jumps into car (I'm long gone). "Fucknell..Distortion worse than safety laminated area car screens!!" Sales lost my dosh [i would have said if my opinion was $hite/binnitt] & cost of a new screen.... Sales still thanked me for my giving it a go next call in. TS
Mally Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 I did an MG once, takes very light scratches out, but removes glass so there is always a ripple, but not the scrape there was before. The paste flies everywhere, got it on my hood and it wouldn't come off. Best to cover everything in sight.New screen is always the best bet anyway. tooSavvy 1
beko1987 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 I'd run it over winter and not care as much about stone chips from glitters and cheap shit road repairs and reassess next spring!
dean36014 Posted September 23, 2016 Author Posted September 23, 2016 Seeing as the scratch is about 15 inches long think I'll leave it then and stick a hammer through the screen next year! Anyone want a glass polishing kit!
HillmanImp Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Can you get this done professionally? Its getting to that time of year when old cars become undrivable due to the constant dazzling from german cars and their desire to have lights brighter than the sun. Removing the light scratches you accrue on windscreens over time will at least ease some of the discomfort. Maybe I should bill BMW for the work.
beko1987 Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 you may as well try it now! the screen on the xantia is very scratched all over, autoglass lolm8 'd me when I ran it through their checker so I'm looking at doing something. try it, worse case you get a ripple, which won't be any worse than a scratch tooSavvy 1
chodweaver Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 As I said, I'll take it off your hands. PM sent
