Got some cash out for the jag, going with the ripped jeans and poverty look to aid bargaining

Must be something special about today with all the collections!

Good luck. Looks to be a nice motor.

So far so good, the roads have been clear as far as the A1 and A19 and so we decided to take a break and divert to Northallerton for food and coffee and a walk around the traditional market town, before heading back to the mission

How times change: It used to be 20 Bennies, a couple of Steak Bakes and a bottle of full-fat fizz. (Greggs ain't 'alf gone all poncey)

They brought these out a while ago. Theyre for inhaling bacon dripping if youre trying to give up butties.

Now the equivilant Mondeeo has all but vanished, these are starting to look like a 'proper' baby Jag.

Much interest in these. A report on how they compare with your proper jag would be interesting :)

Got home without incident and avoiding any jams on the A19 thanks to Wilson x2 for the traffic update? No petrol station shot cos it's a diesel and cos it came with half a tank included. There is lots of history and it's good general condition with just a few small marks to the body and wear to the drivers seat, but it needs a good clean inside and out after a lack of use since the mot in April.

The Jag drives well and feels confident and planted on the road, with enough power for everyday use and a wide range of seat adjustment so comfort is not a problem. It does feel strange hearing a diesel rattle on start up and not a purr but once on the go it feels like you are I. A proper Jag from the wood and leather, the general finish and dash design aping it's larger brother much as the exterior. Some of the plastic does feel out of place but it makes a better case for being a compact Jag than the S type ever did and I do like those having owned one in the past. It does not really relate to the XJ8 in the level of power or luxury feel, but it is a lot less hassle to park! As a modern Vanden Plas 1500 it works well and I am glad to have bought it as I can use it daily without visiting the fuel station as often as the employees, but for the full grace, space and pace experience I would recommend an XJ8 while they are still affordable.

I will update again in a few days when I have had the chance to give it a close look over and have driven it on the daily commute etc.

Sounds like you had a lot better luck than I did today!

I reckon your the forerunner on shite on these. In 5 years time, they'll be proper AutoShite material

I wish they didn't rust or and I wish the powerful petrols didn't have the complicated AWD system. A 2.5 V6 wagon seriously appeals.

Sub 500 Jag tho...top buyage. :D

Wash the underside with a pressure washer twice a year and it won't rust. Much. Change the ATF too, not too hard to do. Avoid P6000 tyres - they make even the AWD car handle funny once they're a bit worn. My father now has my car, and Firestones at 50 quid a corner are better. V6 oil pressure switch is known to leak, just nip it up. Use only gen dit Jag oil filters: FRAM/FIAMM, Cooper, Chapman, MANN filters may not have the right thread, and you may be left with an empty engine and a filter that won't fit. I had to drive to Belfast at 200MPH one Saturday morning to get to the dealer's before it closed.

OP: Outer headlamp bulbs can be a bugger to change: get a knitting needle to release and re-engage the clamp/clip through a hole in the slam panel. If your car has aircon, the wee fan inside the monitor unit to the left of the steering wheel in the dash will go DDDDDDRRRRRRRR. TADT,S. If it doesn't, it's broken. Check your front springs - they are known to snap at the bottom, and may pierce a tyre. I bet the jacking points are wiggly too. Clean 'em up, straighten 'em with pliers and underseal the fuck out of them. The jacks are SHIT. A full size spare will fit the tyrewell, BTW. Outside temperature sender is a Motorcraft part, and only about 12 bucks from the US and A. They go boogaloo and tell you that it's 76 Centigrade, or minus forty. It's behind the bottom of the front bumper, and dead easy to change. I notice that you don't have headlamp washers. Good. The dye in regular screenwash can block the input to the little pumps. Mine blocked up on the driver's side, and access is under the front wheelarch liner. A BASTARD to get at when you only have a trolleyjack. I invented new swear words.

Enjoy your Jaguar, that looks lovely.

I have only driven the V6 petrol engine X-Type, but I liked the car and the way it drove. The X-Type is underrated in my view. I'm not sure why this is, but they seem to be compared with the XJ in a way that other 'Prestige' makes more humble offerings are not. No one expects the C Class to be like the S Class - everyone knows it will be far less of a car, so why do people judge the X-type so harshly?

They're nothing like the XJ, but judged on their own terms, they drive well. Compared to the XJ, the X-Type feels small and light. The handling is nimble and fairly sporty - though they lack the fluidity and finesse that makes the XJ such a joy. They lack the XJ's 'cocooning' feel; you sit high up on the seats, not low down as in the XJ with that vast bonnet ahead of you and lack the XJ's feeling of huge weight and substance. They ride well - better than an E46 BMW, and are refined things.

I agree that some of the interior plastics are disappointing, but overall the interior is very pleasant and comfortable and I like the old school wood dash and general ambience. They don't feel 'special' like the XJ does, nor do they have that indefinable self assurance in their style, but they feel more emotionally involving than a lot of their competitors. They are less forgettable and bland than the E46, for example. There is something more endearing about the X-type - the BMW is just a tool to get you around.

All opinion of course, but judged on their own terms rather than in comparison to the XJ (which was more than  twice the price) they are a very decent car.

How does that stop the sills rusting from inside out?

Must be a bloody clever pressure washer!

WRT the bigger petrols - don't worry about the 4wd - the AWD system is generally reliable apart from the transfer box leaking issues (they only hold about 600ml of oil so when it leaks out of the rear into the CV joint they run dry and die pretty quickly), easy spotted as the prop CV joint will be wet and probably put a ring of oil and grease around the underside too. Centre bearings on the prop are an issue too but they're cheap and just a few bolts to swap.

In proper AS style, rather than the 1000-1400 most places will charge you to strip and rebuild the transfer box (or swap it), you can fix it with a toilet washer, an o-ring and some silicone sealant. Most expensive bit is the oil @ 30 quid a litre. It's a bit of a bastard of a job mind as it wasn't designed to be refilled so you need to get the car almost up to 45* on a jack to fill the bugger back up.

Not sure on the complaint that the washer motor is hard to get to - you don't even have to take the wheel off, just jack up and take the arch liner out, 10 minute job.

Tyres - Dunlop Bluresponse are cheap and really quiet on 'em road-noise wise, which suits the cars.

Give the fusebox under the bonnet a good clean out and some electric spray/WD - they're a bitch for corroding and causing all sorts of issues. headlights included.
