D Spares & Tyres Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Its 18 years since I sold my XM When I see them nowadays my initial thoughts are `wow they are good looking cars I should buy one` Then the memories of mine come flooding back and sad thoughts enter my head Dave_Q 1
dome Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 oooh those strut tops look a bit crusty... and their pretty unobtanium and take the bonnet out with them the rear not sinking will be the rear height corrector, easily solved. the rust and those strut tops though? you'd have to really want one/fancy a challenge... I look forward to the shitely collection thread! Good call-the boy at the yard reckoned it had what he thought was a strut mount on the way out when he drove it. Junkman and beko1987 2

beko1987 Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Good call-the boy at the yard reckoned it had what he thought was a strut mount on the way out when he drove it.they cause alot of damage too from what I've seen when they go. and from what I've read on the fcf the only fix is sending them abroad for a rebuild at a fair few quid and a few weeks wait. I have seen cages that bolt onto the top mount bolts and at least contain them when they do go bang so they won't write off the bonnet and wings and damper, dunno how available or home brew they are though the abs could be rusty rings, corroded sensor, blown rear number plate bulb, anything that normally goes wrong with any abs system really. the abs light came on on my puma a few months before the end, but I scrapped it before the mot so didn't have to worry about it... it's a tough call really, but this is autoshite, and this sort of thing is what you do...
RoadworkUK Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Buy it / Scrap it. How will the dice land? It's Junkman! It's a done deal
320touring Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Speaking as the owner of the most fucked cx on these pages, I'd be leaving the XM alone Junkman, RobT and beko1987 3
Junkman Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 The frightening bit is not so much the car, its the fact that it is 300 miles away. Were it close by, I wouldn't hesitate a millisecond. It will fail an MoT, that's for sure.Would there be even a slight chance for it to pass, again, I wouldn't hesitate. But all things considered, I'm hesitating.I have to think. dome and beko1987 2
beko1987 Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 the 300 miles is the issue I agree. And it would probably pass an mot after a bit of an underside cleanup, but obv that's no use to you 300 miles away. Could you take a leaf out of they all do that sir's current capers and get a boat home? Junkman and They_all_do_that_sir 2
beko1987 Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Speaking as the owner of the most fucked cx on these pages, I'd be leaving the XM aloneshhhh Cleon-Fonte and Junkman 2
Junkman Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 All things considered, sadly it's a pass. Not sure how I can ever restore my reputation from here onwards, but I shall try my hardest. Anyway, many, many thanks again to the SVM, you guys are just larger than life! dome, 320touring and AMC Rebel 3
320touring Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Almost as if we are getting wise with our passing years! Junkman 1
Junkman Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 That has yet to prove itself. My quest for finding a suitable* WBoD shall continue. dome 1
beko1987 Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 But... will a a member of the svm be tempted by its frenchness now it's existence is known? let's not forget cms has let them be infiltrated, it's only a matter of time... Will Neil go and have a look at the BMW? find out in the next episode of the chod files! chaseracer, 320touring, Dave_Q and 2 others 5
johngarty Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Junkman. You must have really big feet. To tyrekick from 300 miles away is quite incredible. Supernaut and Junkman 2
messerschmitt owner Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Sadly, I sent a car load of XM bits away last weekend including a pair of superb strut tops. Theyre a very quick swap over - probably 90 mins for both sides! - that's 40 mins to do it and 50 mins to clear up the lhm on the deck. Both on that car look rough! The rust isn't too bad - the wheel carriers always go - just like that one! It's pretty late and the later ones aren't as good - basically the 1995-8 ones in 2.1 flavour are the best of all. Locally, I would - the rebuilt strut tops are good and at least one XM Club member has a stock now, I believe! You have to watch for rust in these places: sills - from front to back especially on the jack mountingsfront bumper mountings on inner wingssubframe on frontinner wings at rearand chassis rails along the car. Metal is thick but protection is thin ... You may find the abs is simply a duff sensor - and should be able to tell which wheel by the flashes as it goes through the check. Tidy looking but those struts would give me a heart attack ... RobT, dome and Junkman 3
dome Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Not sure how I can ever restore my reputation from here onwards, but I shall try my hardest. There's a £500 Maserati in the eBay tat thread... Junkman and 320touring 2

I'm more worried about the sheetmetal around the strut tops, especially the offside one. messerschmitt owner 1
messerschmitt owner Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 I'm more worried about the sheetmetal around the strut tops, especially the offside one.they can go there - not too difficult to weld a patch in though. One of the Club XM guys has just done that on another car.
Junkman Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 Junkman. You must have really big feet. To tyrekick from 300 miles away is quite incredible. I think this was a tad more than tyre kicking, if only just, I mustard mitt.If that thing was only slightly less frilly in some key areas, some digits would now be on their way from one database to another. johngarty and messerschmitt owner 2
Inspector Morose Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 In the past 18 months I have Bought a near 60 year old Rover unseen off the net and drove it over 200 miles back home. Bought a 33 year old hydro Citroen unseen then let someone else off here drive it first before finally getting to properly drive home it two weeks later. From Scotland. You're all wimps. the judge, Cleon-Fonte, chaseracer and 3 others 6
Junkman Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 they can go there - not too difficult to weld a patch in though. One of the Club XM guys has just done that on another car. Yes, that's all well and good, but difficult to do when the car is that far away and I'm already having the feeling that I used up a sizeable chunk of benevolence from the locals.I do like the car, but from where I am, the Plums would be just ticking away at an alarming rate.If I could get to it setting off in the morning and be back for lunch, it would be an entirely different matter altogether.

Eddie Honda Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Not sure how I can ever restore my reputation from here onwards, but I shall try my hardest. I say, I say boy. Only 300 miles and no water to cross. chaseracer 1
Junkman Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 So crossing water is the only way?Not sure whether it's that heroic to have a car standing still on a ship. johngarty 1
johngarty Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 I eagerly await this thread expanding where Junkman restores his Autoshite reputation in quick order, superhero stylie. (which we all know he will). A blind purchase and drive back of a shonky barnfind from either the Shetlands or Guernsey should suffice. Junkman 1
andrew e Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 I'm feeling guilty I broke a (1) rust free (2) petrol (3) automatic one of these. But it was 10 years ago. It broke REALLY well junkman and that V6 has the internal glass tailgate still. I still use the bottle back off it, and in a really tenuous SVM connection the guy that bought the tyres wanted them for his Volvo. RE foot brakes, my year old Merc has one still. Junkman 1
Junkman Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 Right. Reconsiderations have been made, and if everything pans out alright, my reputation of being a flamboyant loser shall be reinstated with a blast. Stay tuned. messerschmitt owner, johngarty, Lacquer Peel and 2 others 5
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Going to take a very careful bit of route planning to ensure water is crossed... But that can be done. loserone 1
