Nexen Tyres - A Review

Without wanting to get into the [tyre brand name] are [good/bad], I had them on my [car name]. They were [opinion] in the wet.

Kuhmo Ecsta's are great, I had them on my Impreza,; not sure if it was the car as well, but I'd have them again.

Had them on the money-eating bastard Audi A4. They were indeed good. Hence I went for Kumhos again for the Xantia.

I have a pair of GT Radials on my caravan, they err, roll well.   Those and Nankang were about the only choice in 175/13C 8 Ply.

Had triple A's on the C-Max. In the dry they squealed like a virgin on her wedding night and in the wet they were slipperier than a call girls knickers on friday night! Changed them for Conti's which seem the business.

i've got round tyres on my cars........

they are black and made of rubber.

dunno what they are,EXACTLY but usually i buy not the cheapest, or the dearest ones either.

I've got Kumhos on the Pride and it's lethal. That said I suspect thata because of what it is rather than the tyres.

Mine has a selection of elderly no-brand part-worns on the back / spare, and a pair of toyos on the front.  I'd have moved the toyos to the back, but they have much less grip..

I used to use Kumho Ecstas's and now use Uniroyal Rainexpert 3's. Had no problems with either of these and they're reasonably priced.

I once put two new Corsas on an E30 325i Touring. They were so bad I stopped at Trowell Services and using the standard suicide jack, swapped the wheels front to rear. I had quite a few part worms such as Nankangs and they were okay - no crashes or moments.

But I recently broke the habit of a lifetime - well two really.

1. I just fill the tank at a petrol station. Fed up with a tenner here and twenty there. Just fill the bloody thing, and calculate the economy.

2. Budget tyres. Just forget it. The better ones (Davanti, Landsail) are pretty good (I've tested them) but they're too close in price to the two premium sets I have - Uniroyal Rain Experts on one car, and Goodyear Efficient Grip on another. For 205/60x15's I got them from KwikFit on their special deal days for around 200 quid a set of four. Brand new, 7/8 mm of tread.  The Goodyears were £250 for five supplied, fitted, balanced. The car cost £400 two years ago and there are some things I'm not cheap skating on anymore - after all, by only paying £200 a year for a useful BMW estate, I'm already so far ahead it's not worth getting the calculator out.

I'm gonna buy them Nexens that are up for sale and chuck them

A sound strategy imo.

A lot is to do with what suits the car. I'm sorry to say no matter what tyres you fit to a Vectra it isn't going to make it handle like shit to a blanket. You could fit Michelin Cross Climates, it won't make that much difference. It's a fine motorway tool but other than that it handles like a Shackleton on Castors. I've warmed to the Vectra over the past months but I'm sorry to say that having driven one fitting some expensive tyres is like cooking some fish fingers in a white wine jus.

Being a T5 I guess you'll be changing the fronts soon enough?

Didn't quite manage T5 status, best I could do was a 2.5T.

Now we have worked out which tyres are shite, how are you doing mate? Did you get the keys, etc sorted??

Posted

Unfortunately not mate, house keys/garage keys/work keys all continue to be missing. The recovery yard has stated they were only given the key for the car and denying any recollection of other keys (despite the fact the car key was one of a massive bunch) and the police station the officer is based from and the property stores at the next police station have no record of any possessions coming in. I've had a moan as there was paperwork in the car (left strewn across the verge) which has my address details on so as far as I'm concerned some random knobhead could be walking around with my address and house keys. Not that is matters as I've changed the locks now anyway but there are other keys on there I really need to get back.

My work phone is missing as well (it was in the drivers door pocket) - it was in a leather case and my debit card was in there as well as some receipts for expenses - I've cancelled the card but I've lost out on about £80 of expenses that work won't let me claim without a receipt. Fortunately my iPhone was located in the passenger footwell when I went to the car so at least I salvaged something. I reckon the police have the keys/phone and took them from the scene but missed my other phone with it being under a load of stuff that had flown forward in the impact. I can't remember sod all as I must have been our for the count through all of this. The attending officer is back at work tomorrow (he hasn't been back in since Saturday night) so I will try and speak to him directly at some point.

I replaced a set of Dunlops with Nexen back in my 1007 days, and it transformed the handling, the OEM Dunlops were shite.  A couple of cars later and the Soul comes with OEM Nexen NBlue fitted.  17500 miles in and the fronts still have a couple of mm to go, and rears a hell of a lot more, they are big 235/45R18 buggers though.  No complaints in the wet and at speed their quiet, the brick is averaging 48.5mpg with them on all the time.

Flippin' hell. (excuse the pun)

Glad you're intact and still of this world. That must have been pretty horrible to look back at once you'd come around.

So many variables regarding how a car behaves on a particular brand of tyres, a lot of it is down to the tyres themselves (composition, design, condition/age) but so much is also down to the car it's fitted to, the road surface and the driver.

Sometimes shit just happens and it's impossible to put the blame anywhere - just count yourself lucky it wasn't worse.

I used to always run Pirelli P6000s on my Mk4 Fiestas and my MK1 Focus, purely because I thought they were great on those cars and that's what they came with when new (bought new because SP Snr worked for the blue oval so big discounts etc). These days, that particular tyre is slated as much as the budget brands as being a ditchfinder - but for me, they were fine - I remember 'being tight' and skimping, just one time I bought a pair of Sava Intensas for the front of the MK1 Focus - never have I been so terrified in a car I had been so familiar with, I had to change my driving style completely (especially in the wet) before going back to the P6000s - meaning driving was no longer 'fun'. They didn't last long - I replaced them as soon as I wore them down to 3mm as by that point they were just as much of a liability in the dry, even when driving like a giffer.

Actually, I did skimp one other time - I bought a part worn to get an old MK4 Escort through the MOT to part-ex - it failed on other stuff which was much worse (the front end wasn't exactly lined up with the rear due to a Rover Tomcat sliding across it's face).

Anyway - all that crap said - glad you're alright. Have a pint and enjoy the bank holiday weekend. :)

When I crashed a car a couple of years ago the fuckers stole my sat nav from the bag of belongings including broken glass they gave me back so I feel your pain regarding keys!
