i posted a while back about a badly misfiring car that had been stood , well its 98% cleared itself up with new petty

i w as wondering if its worth running a couple of cans of inj cleaner through it , guessing maybe one of the injectors has started to gum up

Start with some 99ron from Shell. Good detergents in here.

Then I'd find a long, steep hill and hammer it up there a few times.

In 3rd.

Cataclean isn't bad - I know it's not specifically an injector cleaner but it runs through the fuel system

Known in the trade as a bottle of hopes and dreams ! Cleans your injectors , stops your chimney leaking and clears up your dogs mange !

I've never seen any improvement with them ( petrol is a pretty good cleaner ) but worth a try I suppose

None of the injector cleaners I've tried have made a shit of difference except for when I put some in a Corvette thar really didn't like the taste of it!

Standard thinners is the main ingredient of most injector cleaners isn't it ? . Xylene and toluene ?

The Saab boys use it as a cheap octane booster

I have to say that my old Mk3 golf used to love being fed a bottle of STP complete fuel system cleaner once a year. Fuel economy would go up 2-3mpg, it'd idle happier and rev more cleanly for a month or two. It really did make a difference. It was the posh 'complete' one which was £15 a bottle even then so probably closer to £20 now.

However, no subsequent car has ever responded as well. It makes bugger all difference to the Nissan, Saab, a 150k mondeo mk2 2.0 zetec - none of them.

I chucked a bottle in the Mondeo last week. If like to think it preventative more than an actual cleaner. It's only paraffin I think.

25 years ago I had the use of a couple of GM cars (Vauxhall and Pontiac) fitted with (I believe) Bosch injectors. Both had trouble with hot starting that was completely cured by using one of those fuel additives. If my memory serves me right it was Redex, but this was a long time ago.

The "good" redex used to have all manner of horrible poisons in it, but it broke up fuel varnishing and carbon pretty well as a result.

The stuff you can buy now is crap.

None of the current stuff works that well to be honest.

Injectors are pretty clever things, and a cleaner won't fix a worn out one :)

They really are just snake oil.

Save getting them properly ultrasonically cleaned, you may have some success removing them, and soaking in acetone overnight.

Did someone say Toluene ?

We use that stuff at work and crikey !, it melts rubber like a bastard (unless it's Viton), and makes certain plastics soft and stringy.

I'd certainly avoid using it in a car, as it will melt fuel lines & make a right old mess.

The old Redex was ace! The clouds of shite produced were epic.

I heard good things about Cataclean but don't really know how accurate it all was.
