Guest Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Obtained this Accord Hatchback/Coupe today, with thanks to Vic "Snazzy New Do" Smith: Pretty chuffed to be honest! Wants some welding and a few other bits and bobs but it drives great, the handling is pretty amazing and the engine must make it the smoothest carb-fed car I've ever driven. Has a very 70s interior: READY 4 THE SUMMER etc.
trigger Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Great car there Hirst!, Drove a Hondamatic one of these years ago, It was when a new model Accord coupe (About 1998ish) was coming out and the main dealer we did work had one they wanted painted so it could go in the showroom.I remember that it drove great and was very smooth. Is this the one that was on RR the other day?
r.welfare Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 HOT! But do get the Dustbuster on those Netto's sweet wrappers in the driver's footwell. That design of door mirror really suits it, too.
pogweasel Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 What size of engine does this have _Hirst?1.6? 2.0? I just espied that it's got a 5-speed box, GR8 4 motorway chomping!
Guest greenvanman Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Hey, that's not bad for a 4-wheeled Honda
tatmeister Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Sweeet!Had two of them in the past - manual hatch in blue and a hondamatic saloon in chocolate brown.Got them because I they run on 2 star! 1600cc low compression (8:1 IIRC). Had some carb problems with both of them and watch out for a tiny water hose branched off the head - the bit you clamp the hose to rusts away and it lets go with comical amounts of steam billowing out behind you.....Always fancied a Prelude of the same era.
Guest Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 It's a 1.6 and does indeed have a 5-speeder, it has a badge on the back proudly stating that fact actually. Should get about 40mpg on a run (apparently). Hey leave the sweet wrappers alone! I've added an empty Lion Bar wrapper to the mix, probably a full packet of Werthers to follow. Hirst-modz.
Guest Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Not only can you still get Lion Bars, you can get them in a King Size variety - a proper long fat bastard version, none of this Duo "share with your buddies" bollocks. I have evidence in the passenger side footwell.
Mr Lobster Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Thats fantastic. And yes you can still get Lion Bars, had one a week or so back myself!
retrogeezer Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Nice....and I'm not just talking about lion bars and starbars!
AnthonyG Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I take it this means somebody gave away a car free on RR with no problems! Amazing, and well done for a good save !
seth Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Add a Curly Wurly in thre for me will ya Qlauyti Honda-idge
500tops Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 over the moon you got this, Lanky Tim wanted to oval it! I have a real soft spot for these; i taught myself to drive in a 1.6 saloon version back in around '90, '91 - it was my god parents whip & they had a fair bit of ground. i used to give it the full beans & rev the tits off it in neutral before slamming it into 'drive'! it was fuckin' class & took no end of punishment! The number was WDH ???X, even back then all 4 arches were chock full of glenn, but it was such a peach mechanically. Still my favourite 'modern' car to drive!
Mash Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Shame there aren't more 1st Gens about. I'd love one of these or a Prelude one day, circumstances permitting. You're right about the smoothness - Japanese cars seem to be a bit lumpy regardless of condition but my Accord is beautifully smooth. Is the 1600 fairly low revving too?Shame it's not beige....
Guest Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 It is about right in terms of revs - it redlines at 6000rpm but has good torque so I've not had to really rev it high.According to the chap I got it off (standing in for the owner who was at work) there are 16 left which sounds about right.
wuvvum Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 That's gaw-juss. My second-favourite Honda after the 1300. Nice to see one that isn't a Hondamatic, too - that should be a pretty useful tool with a 5-speeder.
fotorabia Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 i just dropped Violet Crumble on your front seat whilst droolin..
Timewaster Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 My bro had an identical one as his first car, I would have been about 13 at the time and was quietly impressed. I wasn't going to tell him that though!XVA156T - Long since dead I would assume.

Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 What a great result. Nice one hirst! These must be pretty rare in any form but a manual box one is a real bonus. It takes a brave man to post a free car up on the internet by the way! Fair play to him. I'd love to read his PM's after that went up there on R-R.
Mr Average Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Bit of class there Hirst, I never used to like J Shite but I am really coming round to it now, but it's still a POOR MAN'S Maxi.
Ratdat Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Hey I've got some new wings for one of these I think. If I have you can have them if they're any use to you.
Guest Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Hey I've got some new wings for one of these I think. If I have you can have them if they're any use to you. That'd be brilliant! The wings on this seem solid from my initial poke around but a little rust is blebbing through in places, they seem solid but I must admit I've not really had a proper look yet. Still want to crack on with other stuff, so this will just have to join the queue for now.Didn't meet the chap but I'd have been interested to see his PM box too. I imagine my offer of turning up next weekend and taking it away was pretty attractive compared to the other stuff in there, I imagine there were all sorts of ludicrous requests involving him delivering it or saving it for months. Was just nice to see something not a million miles from my manor for a change, so I stepped in!
Guest Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Just thought I'd give this a bit of an update as I fired it up and moved it around the other day. Not really much closer to an MOT on it, but I've poked around it enough over the last few months to have a much better idea of what it needs, not that bad really! At some point I replaced a fuse which made the radio work again. Going to get it inside for the winter though.
