Xantia of Desires - Farewell xantia!

meriva needs to go buy mrs summat interesting :D

I hear ya, but she likes it, and that's good enough for me. I try not to drive it as much as possible, MOT day is usually the only time

Is good for learning to spanner on though, I broke my cambelt change virginity on it! And exhaust changes, brake caliper rebuilds, sump drops, suspension replacement, rear springs and shocks, cos of course, ORL VOXALLS R SHIT M9

But I don't often post about them here, cos it's not Autoshite material yet. I'll wait 10 years for it to be prime fodder*, than BOOM, I was ahead of the curve

I wish I knew about that lighter fluid trick when I owned it, that sticker residue in the top corner of the windscreen bugged me the whole time I had it!  Trims are from a Synergie, they occasionally pop up on eBay or singly in scrapyards.

We had a "spare" (cattle-grid find) one of those trims here at Castle_Cleland. I think I gave it to Chompy when he had the car, but it may still be in our top shed somewhere. Can anyone remember?

It's in its original silver and black, so would need painting to match.

Pretty sure you kept that one because Chompy didn't like the trims.

I think the LH lock was a bit sticky when I had it, but had given up completely in Moog's ownership.

They aren't too bad to change but you must use mk1 Xantia parts. We have 4 mk1 Xantia in the field at work so may be able to assist with parts.

I'm sure a trip to Peterborough to see family can be arranged, then said family can be left whilst I pop over! Won't be soon though!

Shame I'm so skint, there's a Pug 405 being broken with identical seats to what it has in it at the moment, just less torn! Will build up a war chest in a few months and have another look!

There's a nice leather xantia leather interior on ebay, but it's from a later car with seat airbags etc so won't bother with that. I could go down the other route and ask what is the most comfy, squashy seat that will fit a Xantia! The Pug seat adjusts oddly for me, but I'm not sure if it's just because it's a bit baggy, or I haven't got it adjusted correctly. I suppose I should sit in a Xantia with actual Xantia front seats first to check if I like them, none being broken locally to me though on ebay

Any money I get will be used for the wheel balancing and a new LHM pipe though, before any of this cosmetic nonsense! At the moment, if I spill anything on the front seats I can care not a jot.

Does the interior still smell faintly of cheap aftershave and vomit?

No, it smells alright now, Bub cleaned it out before it went, and now I've emptied the ashtray and removed the many air fresheners it's quite pleasant. Smells of glass polish today though after cleaning the windscreen last night. I'll sit in the passenger seat at lunchtime and do the inside of that glass...

Plus I've smoked a bagillion rollies in it since picking it up so that'll mask the smell nicely

Posted

Word of caution if you want to put other Pug seats in it.  Those Pug seats fitted are on Xantia frames and if you want new Pug seats you'll have to split them again. For that you'll need some patience and star keys (or whatever they're called) that are L shaped.  Replacement Xantia seats will drop straight in.  The Pug seats are likely the most comfy squishy seats you can put in, I didn't get on with the original Xantia seats but Chompy didn't get on with the Pug seats so well so you should be okay just dropping regular ones in.  The original seats got binned, otherwise you'd be welcome to them.

I like my standard Xantia seats, complete with huge fold-down armrest on the driver's seat.

I love the way that the plethora of POs are on here and able to tell the history of the door locks, satanistic coding written on the tailgate, non-working keypad, seats, wheel trims and even sticky stains on the windscreen. I'd pay money* for that sort of detailed insight on my own cars.

As the wheel trims, I always liked those random Merc ones which were on it for a short time. Keep the early grille as well - looks ace.

They ended up on my xantia, briefly, and are now in my front hallway. Tempted to put them back on again.

Its ace isn't it! The kind of service history money can't buy!

I dunno about the grille, I neither like it or hate it tbh. Barrett expressed a vague interest in it, and I'd be happy to swap it for a normal one if it makes someone else happier tbh.

Anyway, I sat in it just now at lunchtime...

And polished the wing mirror glass on both sides and inside the pass window, removing the alarme sticker in the process.

The window switch housing was a bit filthy, so I had a go with the glass polish and a bit of spit, as it was all I had!

Much better! I then sorted the radio so it turns on and off with the ignition (i left it on yesterday whilst collecting vacuum cleaners, really not used to it not turning off by itself)

I did try to listen for the accumulator tick, but its impossible with the exhaust noise, even on idle! I did some part citrobatics (to fit it in the space the rear has to go over the curb, so went high to normal, and I think I heard some frantic ticking, but TBH it could have been anything. Bub said the accumulator and anti sink sphere are the only ones that haven't been changed so may do it just for the shit of it soonish.

My accumulator is ticking like a good'un.

I have a replacement sphere, but getting the old one off is proving to be a PITA. I may borrow the proper tool from a local member of FCF if he lets me.

Posted

When I had the XM I went to see CitroJim, and he showed me how to remove the spheres and run them through his pressure tester thing. He had a proper tool and it was ace to use! Will try to either buy one, or get chatting to him again (if he's still about) and pop over to use his drive and tools.

She feels fine though, so probably won't do that this year. But then anything will feel fine after the rock hard suspension of the ZX, so I'm possibly a bit biased...

The rear shocks were pretty knackered, and it just shook over every little bump. I drive the same roads in the xantia and smile, the worse bits in the zx are much much reduced in the xantia!

The volcane was lowered from the factory, and although I changed the main bushes in my ownership, the rest were probably very very old and worn!

Posted

The height corrector being dirty makes sense. Infact I was reading a how to guide for removing and cleaning them today! I did briefly see some paperwork with spheres mentioned, I'll have a better look one day!

She certainly goes up and down better than my xm did, this rises from the floor with no trouble, the xm would struggle to build pressure without a little help with raising the revs. I'm not going to worry about the spheres immediatly, ill check the lhm filters first and basic checks like that, and try to get hold of a sphere tool over winter.

She won't die yet, dont you worry!

Weren't the spheres done way back when Ruffgeezer owned it?  There was a lot of crap in the LHM filters the first time I did them, I suspect there's a lot of crap in the system still, I got the impression it hadn't had much in the way of servicing on that front.  Easy to clean out at least, and I believe both Chompy and Bub cleaned them at least once each.  Was advised against LHM flush, just to keep pulling the filters every so many thousand miles and running fresh LHM through annually (unless you do moon mileage, in which case twice a year).  I reckon all the expensive jobs are done on this one so it's just a case of keeping things topped up.  Getting those arches done before winter would be my priority, if you ever find you can bring it way up to the North East with a bit of suitable steel I'm happy to have a go at filling the holes for you with the magic sparkly stick for free.

Yes I did the spheres as I bought the car without driving it first then found out that they were knackered.

Posted

So the wheel balancing, welding, front brake squeal, new spheres and maybe an lhm flush seem to be the list to grt cracking with then!

Id love to take you up on your offer vulgalour, but have no idea when I'll next be in the north east. Dont think ive ever been there before! Is this as far south as the xantia has ever been?

It smelled like that when I got it.

Ahhh OK mate. I've not vomited in it. No comment on my aftershave though

Dunno, are you further south than Maidstone?  That's as far south as I took it.

No, further north. It's been further then! Maybe a trip to bournemouth is in order...
