What's mileage on it now Sam?

Mike and Angyl did the clutch a few years ago but I don't think that many miles

Posted

138k I think. Yep, clutch done in Oct 2014, the FCF beards don't think that's the issue once I told them that (I found Angyl's post on it and linked to it for proof) as it shouldn't have gone that quickly, plus it still drives fine in the clutch department.

I'm hoping a clutch cable needing adjustment and a fatigued clip are all that's the issue, only one way to find out though!

If the clip doesn't turn up have a ring round Citroen dealers i can always pick one up and drop it over. Worst case scenario you have to take it off my red one. I'm not at work this week so can help out on the logistics front. Are you in the Marlow area at the moment?

I called Worleys in Wycombe, and to be fair the old bloke who answered the parts extension knew exactly what I was on about, complete with 'oooh we used to sell loads of those', but none in stock. He did say he knew some place in Uxbridge had them in, and indeed they do, but won't post them or accept payment by card and I have zero hope of getting to Uxbridge tomorrow with no car, and I'm sure as fuck not doing that with no clutch!

So if it doesn't arrive by tomorrow, I have enough clothes to stay over and do it thursday, but thats not ideal as people have moved meetings around that came up for tomorrow to thursday, so I'll piss alot of people off... Plus Amy is working thursday night so I have to get home somehow for then.

Yep, I am in Marlow tonight. I'll try not to worry about the above until tomorrow. I'm also a bit weary about using a second hand clip, what if yours is 70% ready to snap... (not that I wouldn't say no to it as an emergency spare, but you know what I mean)

Handy to have you as backup though, if it's not turned up by lunchtime tomorrow I might take you up on your offer, but by the time I get it stripped off the red one having never done it before, it'll be dark...

What make was the clutch that was put in ? Some of the cheaper ones are hellish heavy compared to an luk or Valeo part . Also with running that amount of smoke ( sorry boost ) may we'll have worn the clutch early . As clutches wear the leverage angle of the fingers changes and makes it heavier .

No idea

No idea

Hope not!

It gives no signs of a worn clutch, and my old puma gave me 4000 miles of worn clutch signs before I had it replaced

If you mum is in chinnor. Feel free to give me a shout if you need tools etc.

No big deal to pop into Uxbridge for you. Just had a read through the link you gave for replacing it, alright for ratchet spanners? I can always have a drive down with some tools if you need them.

Twosmoke - that's in the middle of my mind, once I've successfully changed the clip and adjusted the cable I'm hoping it lasts until I can think about affording a new clutch...

Conkerman - that's amys mum! Mines in Marlow.

Tabact - I don't have those, I'm hoping normal spanners will do. I had a look at lunchtime and access didn't look horrific, should be able to get a ratchet on one side, but if you fancy lending a hand then by all means pop over, no idea when for though as it all depends on when the postman comes. I'll get to work for 6am just to show thanks for thrm letting me dive out to fix it, having a shite friendly workplace helps, must be all the favors I've earnt over the years fixing colleagues hoovers and cars! But if your at a loose end drop on by, would be good to have someone to swear with! 112 Newtown Road, SL7 1lq! The meriva should find it easily enough!

From memory, the replacement clutch was a Valeo.  I originally bought the wrong one (which I think was an LUK?  It's been a few years, memory is fuzzy) because Citroen so Citromatics provided the correct one for considerably more.  When I had it (before the clutch was done) the clutch got extremely heavy and the pedal very difficult to press when stuck in traffic, so you'd definitely know about it if the clutch is on the way out.

I can't remember if it's auto-adjust or manual adjust for the cable on this one, but I do know whichever it was could be a nuisance to get set up properly.

Iirc you won't need ratchet spanners for that job just 3 foot long fingers with 6 double jointed knuckles .That and removable eye balls with integral led lights .

It has been heavier since Friday, but I think the aa guy messed with the adjustment to get the cable back on. I didn't see what he was doing as he kindly whacked the heaters up on his van and told me to sit inside as I was shaking with cold. Going to attempt to adjust the cable, someone on the fcf said that the wrong adjustment can kill a clip as it has too much travel or something. It's manual, and looks quite simple*

When the fcf beards saw the date you did the clutch they immediatly started saying the clutch should be fine if not blatantly fucked, and to look at the cable/just bad luck with the clip.

We shall see, that's all I can really do! Otherwise I'll roffle it and the winner has to live update driving it back with no working clutch!

I'll have a run down to give some moral support and I'll throw the toolbox in the boot you never know. If you're pissing around in the footwell a torch holder/spanner passer is always handy. You've got my mobile number in the PM I sent you about the Meriva. Text or ring me once you have a time. Like I said I can always come via Uxbridge if need be.

There's always a petrol one on my drive that's over fuelling probably from me driving it into the ground which shouldn't take a lot of work to get through an MOT. Probably just replace the cat and drop links which I already have and maybe the brakes need a tidy up.

Posted

Moral support would be ace! Not sure if I need the metal clip, I've shown the pic of it on Facebook and everyone says it'll probably be fine with a little bending, they don't usually break, the plastic bit goes first. Only one way to find out!

Ill drop you a text when the part comes and I know what's going on!

I get the impression that chompy late of this forum is/was a hard driver, but I think the clutch will be okay.

The clip could have failed due to previous fatigue and an over adjusted clutch cable as you mention.

Don't read too many horror story guides, just get stuck into it, it's probably easier than it's made out to be.

I seem to remember taking the clocks out to catch a glimpse of what I was doing on the last one I did

I'll have various torches with dubious batteries and a shiter to help, wcpgw!

Going to avoid taking the clocks out I think...

Both bub and myself hooned/hoon it too. Not 3 miles before it went I was ragging it down a back road because I needed a wee. That made it going even worse as it took me longer to get to a toilet...

Plus side though, I'm sat in it now having a rolly and the drivers door light switch is working. It hasn't worked for months so no interior light when I open the door. Coincidence?

Bv offered to lend me a car to get home, am almost sad the aa bloke fixed it...

ah decisions, decisions

My old P Reg 1.9td broke 2 clips and a new cable sorted it. No more broken clips. You might be lucky. C5's are lots easier to work on......no veg mind you.

Interesting... How much time did the new clip buy you?

I don't have a lot of love for PSA clutch layouts. Hope you get it sorted.

Sounds like you need to refine your clutchless driving technique though. These aren't the easiest to drive clutchless, but it can be done. Trick is to take your time, pausing in neutral, then slowly raise the revs until the engine speed matches the road speed, pushing it towards the required gear. When the revs match, they then tend to slot in very nicely. Main thing to remember is that to stop, you WILL have to turn the engine off, unless you can quickly knock it into neutral. Had this joyful experience in my first BX (collapsed pedal box) and my Peugeot 306 (self-adjuster on the cable failed).

I kept the car another 6 months with no issues.  Are the clips and stuff still available?

To be fair I didn't thrash it. I made good progress when it was safe to do so but not raging it through revs to redline. I made good use of the torque more than anything and only used to do 75 ish maximum on open road. Chompy I know did go a bit hell for leather by his own admission, vulgalour not so much as it was standard I think when he had it.

Currently waiting for the post. This will literally decide if I can get home tonight or not.

Failing that, Plan B is for Tabact to kindly drive to Uxbridge and buy the part there. I have £15 in my pocket that Amy gave me for food that I can contribute for his petrol and buy the parts. Sadly though, I binned the post it note I wrote the part numbers down on yesterday...

If I were Dollywobbler, this would make an interesting* video

Yes! It even has the metal clip which is good as looking at my old one it looks broken now, it's not as long/big

Won't leave work straight away, there's traffic issues stuffing alot of people up, Tabact, I'll send you a text!

Place bets on how long it'll last when fitted though, it's not genuine, that will upset alot of the xantia owners group...

Posted

Thing is with the way it was running when you had it bub it's bound to have shortened it's life span.

A Xantia that breaks clutch clips soon wants for a clutch. It could be that the pressure plate fingers are worn so it'll not slip but it will be awful in operation.
