Opel Rekord E 2.0S...

I thought all auto-chokes were utterly crap until I got the Colt. It's the only car I've ever driven where it works almost imperceptibly. The only Vauxhall one I've encountered was on a low-mileage Cav Mk1, which considered 3000rpm an ideal tickover.

But most just moan how complicated the jap ( esp twin carb) set ups are . They obviously need to be to work properly though

Awesome! Will keep an eye on this, my dad and uncles used to have Opel's years back. The last one my dad had was a 1983 Commodore 2.5s no pics though unfortunately, that was scrapped about 15 years ago!

Sorry to dig up an ancient topic but things went quiet on the Opel front...until now! I'm aiming to have it on the road for Volkspower in Redcar on the 14th July, a tall order but I can try.

Planning on starting the welding next week on the sills, inner wings, front valance and where the headlights sit. A good friend who is more experienced with welding (and works in a body shop) is going to have a go at sorting my rotten front wings. I now have a rebuild kit for the carb (thanks to eBay) so hopefully we can get it running properly, though it may need a new radiator-it's looking a bit worse for wear and has a couple of leaks. Will try Radweld or similar unless I can find a second hand one within budget (of about 50p).

Once it's running I'll sort the brakes and final fettling before trying for an MOT. Hopefully it'll pass and I'll get it to Volkspower, it won't be pretty, but it will be there!

If anyone has any parts for one of these, or knows a good source, please get in touch :)

Great to hear this one is getting some attention imminently.

As for using Radweld, please don't. Get the rad fixed or replaced instead. As others on here will likely tell you, it's going to bugger things up longer term.

When's the VBOA show at Billing Aquadrome and are you anywhere near it? They have a good auto jumble where I was able to pick up a new old-stock rad for mine for £25...if I recall correctly it's the same as the FE Victor one.

Good luck with the carb. I assume it's some sort of Pierburg. I had all sorts of probs with the one on my Skoda (as detailed elsewhere on here). Spent ages watching videos on YouTube about rebuilding them and understanding how they work. In the end I removed the part of the choke that increased the idle speed. It means I have to manually raise the idle with the throttle pedal but only for a minute or two.

The option is that it idles at 2k for about ten minutes and it only takes seven minutes to get to work! Takes a bit longer on the way home, with the extra traffic, and the idle would return to normal just before I got home.

So as I said, good luck with that.

Slight progress has been made...

The radiator is now getting rebuilt properly, having taken the advice not to use Radweld and no luck sourcing another one- I may or may not be going to the VBOA show, depends on the pennies (it's about 3 hours away).

The carb is a GM Varijet II, a chap at work is going to help me rebuild it and set it up as he used to work on them years ago (he actually worked at the dealer where the car seems to have been bought from).

I've got a few Carlton bits ..... all depends on what you're after. It took me a good 12 months to find everything I needed to restore my 1985 CDi....you just need to find the right people who have plenty of spares. I'll be taking mine to the VBOA show and attempting to sell it. Not that I want to but needs must. Any pictures of yours?

I know where there are several Carltons for breaking.

The bloke is a bell end and it grieves me to help him get some cash but if you are really stuck for bits then I can forward his details if you can't find them elsewhere
