So i'm currently staying with friends on the Islands of Gozo nr Malta. The island although tiny is full of old cars, cheap beer/wine!

thursday was my first full day here, I was tipped off about a scrap yard on the island by a Maltese chap off the jnc forums, so we went hunting! Our transport with my host:

the yard was of corse closed as the island was having one of many public holidays

Wow. I went to Malta/Gozo in 2003. Don't think I saw half that many retros! (Certainly didn't capture as many on camera...)I do remember seeing quite a few cars driving around sans headlamps at night, just relying on hazards! It's got to the shite-spotting heaven really. Thanks for the pics!

Posted

Any pics of the hot women? That rusty 132 in the yard belies the myth that it never rains in the Med and that Italian steel only rusts in the UK.I went to Malta in about 1991 and it was amazing then too. The first thing I saw upon exiting the airport glass door was a Zephyr 4 taxi.

Posted

Wow - what an amazing amount of spots - cheers for taking the time to upload them.

Whats the red Fiat is this pic? A Punto we don't get here? (at least, I don't recall seeing that rear end)

Posted Image

And the purple thing in this pic?

Posted Image

Loving that pale yellow Mk1 escort and some of the alloys are really cool.

Amazing, looks like a real sanctuary for old grot.I like the Granada 2.1D, it's been upgraded to a turbo via a marker pen.

Posted

Mat.T: Some lovely pictures there, and truly excellent shite-spotting skills !!!

From a tourist point of view, Gozo is everything that Malta should have been. And, as you have proven, it's an autoshitter's paradise too ! I have to disagree with you regarding the hot women, though... Not much to write home about, unless middle eastern women are your thing.

retrogeezer : The red Fiat is a Palio. It's supposed to be a 'world car' sort of concept, designed for disadvantaged/developing countries (...like Malta ?!?!).

The purple thing is a Kia Avella, designed for disadvantaged American college students and the occasional greedy European rent-a-car company.

Well i found another scrap yard this morning much bigger than the previous one i found. No photos as the owner didnt want me to take any, he did let me wander round though. the place was full of 60/70 british stuff and the odd bit of j-tin. Sadly due to eu regulations the goverment has ordered the owner to close and clear the yard. As you can imagine he wasnt very happy about this explaining the Gozo people will now have to go to malta to a central modern brakers.GrumpyOldMan :I went to a concert on the island on friday (which was very good pink floyd cover band and small local band) Most of the girls there had a more Italian look about them especially the lead singer for one of the bands. Stunning! I've been driving the metro around today driving here is quite frightening: right of way is given to the biggest vehcles but new cars on the island will give way to scruffy rusty ones!HillmanImp: Gold thing is a toyota 1000

LOLZathon!"I'm so poor, when I went to college mummy and daddy only bought me a Kia."I had to buy my own stinking pushbike at uni!

You had a pushbike? Bloody luxury etc.

I had to leave school at eight so I could work down the pits 16 hours a day. Walking to uni was a luxury I could only dream of............ BTW the shell in the third photo looks like an L type Vauxhall Velox/Wyvern of about 1950, I wonder how long that had been there.

Absolutely fan-bloody-tastic!! Hillman Hunters seem to be popular! I spy a Mk 2 Cortina (red) in the scrap yard. The Anglia is the pick of the bunch for me- and just imagine if you could fetch one of those Mk 1 Escorts home? You could fund shite-hunting/collecting trips for the rest of your life!

.............BREAKING NEWS..................

Today the Bedford CA owners club announced they were to fold after this photo was shown at the annual AGM and the whole room was en-gulfed in a YOGHURT STYLE SUBSTANCE

Wow. Got any shots from the cliff tops? Might just have been Malta, but loads of classics had simply been pushed off the top when I was there!

and as as ever any piece of rusty metal has the ability to be interesting, i found this:

bearing the ancient inscription MOWOG 1622- so b-series right?

Awesome! Thanks for uploading them, they are without exception incredible 8) Not somewhere I have ever been but definately looks worth a visit.Surely it can't be that difficult to export one of them Mk1 RHD Escorts then sell it back here and retire?

Looks like an AA badge on the grille, I wonder how much stuff on Malta/Gozo starts out in the UK and finds its way there mid-life?

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to reminisce, even though it was only last August! I'm already looking forward to going back in November. We went over to Gozo for the day, it was dirt cheap to get across on the ferry. You're right about Gozo, it's Malta with more charm & a more extreme level of shite about the place! We spent the day walking round the capital Victoria & I spent a good deal of time wandering off on my own in search of interesting shite. Looks like we came across a few of the same vehicles! Off the top of my head (because I can't view the pictures from work), the taxis, the buses, the blue MkI Accord coupe on the sloping main street, the orange 120Y coupe outside the toilets (it's almost like these cars don't move), I think that white Mazda 1000 estate rings a bell as well. Can't remember if there were others you've shown I saw but I certainly covered a lot of ground, I remember that square area where you snapped that Granada Hearse (although I didn't see it), I also walked upto where you snapped that MkI Astra although I don't think I saw it. You saw it by the temple / cathedral on top of the hill where you get great views across Gozo. I walked the length of Victoria in both directions in the 80 degree heat until I hit open road / countryside. I had the blisters to back that up!
