typical dealer markup? SOLVED

I think the difference with supermarkets and shops is they sell new stuff. That Jag is second hand and because Gumtree mentality everyone likes to think they knock can knock a few quid off. Plus I'd be amazed if the dealer wouldn't budge on price a bit.

It does seem incredibly big money for what it is. Eight thousand quid for a 2006 Jag diesel seems nothing short of insane to me, but I'm not buying it and we've probably all bought something mad 'just because'. If you like and can afford it, then why not?

In my opinion no one is going to pay 8K for this car. Someone is going to get the dealer down to a more reasonable price and so it might as well be me.

I am not doing anything dishonest or dishonourable, and I haven't accused the dealer of that either.

If I am right then maybe we can find a price somewhere in the middle that we can both live with, if not I will have to keep looking.

This whole thing of haggling and thus dealers overpricing to cover it sucks, but I didn't invent it and it isn't my fault.

I have bought and sold cars at full sticker when the price is reasonable but this one isn't. Either I just don't bother which would be rather limiting or I give it a go.

I bought a £3 pork pie earlier, it was the exact spec I wanted with black pudding in. I just had to have it.

No and I'm not going to either at that price. I thought it was worth politely telling the dealer exactly that.

This appears to have offended people on here....

Just ignore them, I think it's that time of month again for some.

No, I wasn't offended.... I was politely wondering why we haggle on cars (I did point out that it's expected, not that I'm all huffy about it) but nothing else. I didn't try to chip away at my Pork Pie price, but I would always have a go at a car price.

A pork pie with black pudding in ? Sounds good to me. Anyway like has been mentioned if dealer wont move on price ask for longer warranty, maybe cambelt and service included. If you don't ask you don't get. I have just got a Japanese import Toyota hiace. Great dealer wouldn't move on price. Told him i would buy it and give him a deposit if he fitted a towbar , which would have cost £300. He agreed to this and we shook hands. I opted out of the mike brewer style of shaking hands and walked away happy..

I wouldn't settle for the spec I didn't really want as I know that as soon as the deal was done the perfect one would turn up.

Posted

my goodness this is hard work

it is exactly the spec I want except for the wheels,

however

a: the wheels are a bolt on thing

b: the wheels are the one that everyone else wants, so easy to sell for ££s and get the ones I do want, which funnily enough are not so common

so, the only problem is the price, which from their email is negotiable

Anyway there is some great advice in these two pages so thanks everyone.  Genuinely.

So if this is pretty much your ideal spec, then how much is its closest equivalent with a very similar spec?

Genuine thoughts, not a dig at anyone - why do we go out to buy a car with haggling in mind, but never haggle anywhere else?

Nobody has ever turned up to Tesco, loaded their shopping, and then said "Yeah but I mean, is a Pot Noodle really worth £1? I'll give you 85p" and so on through their whole trolley. Or "I really wanted cheddar, but you've only got red leicester so I'll take it if you knock some cash off".

Even in my line of work selling electronics, people sometimes try it - more as a last ditch attempt - but it never sticks. "Oh, yeah, I'll take this £800 TV - don't suppose you'll take £700 for it will you? Hahahaha no thought not, oh well" is the usual process.

Once upon a time (well,1986), you'd have been labelled some shyster Arab for haggling a price. It just wasn't English.

Now the country's truly bankrupt, it's all the rage. Waitrose and the Coop often accept lower prices on their reduced items. Ebay is full of 'Make an Offer'. But you've got to know your market. I've yet to have a shitty restaurant meal and say, 'either I don't pay because that was utterly shit or we come to something accepable to both of us'. Mainly because, in a friendly way, I'd send the food back right away, and if all they did was microwave it into submission, walk out.

I don't need to walk away, I haven't even walked in. The thing is that I want a dark blue sovereign x350 (not x358) TDVI short wheelbase with cream interior that I can afford but not with intergalactic mileage.

The trick is not to really want what you're making an offer on, in the sense it would be just right, but not something you've set your heart on ever since you saw it on Top Gear or wherever. Of course a truly desirable (by the masses) product will fetch silly prices, but none of us on here is so daft as to want that sort of thing. Daft people wanting something means the price is pretty fixed, usually.

I think you're over analysing. If you like the car, go and see it, show the dealer you're serious and make an offer.

Though as was mentioned earlier, check how much the belt will cost to change, and if it's not got an OEM oil pump, walk away.

I saw this one http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201510087629551

dealer said he would take 6600

It had bubbling paint on the bottom corners of both rear doors and across the boot lid above the chrome trim

It drove well and every toy worked, and it had a brand new air suspension pump

But the interior was brown not cream, and worst of all it had a dark brown headlining.

Interiors for these are not that dear but you can't get the headlining out on a SWB only on a LWB (the rear doors are big enough to slide it out).

I think that it could be had cheaper but the brown interior ruins it. Only 91000 miles too.

This one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252339301193 is the one that really got my interest but the seller sold it to his own parents.

This one http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201604112865947 is dark grey which is probably a good colour.  It was up for 6500 a couple of weeks ago and when I saw it he wouldn't go below 6200 despite dead AC.  As soon as I walked away the price dropped to 6000.  Also only 91000 miles.

I never realised how trivially I treated the car buying process...

the answer was 10%

Mileage 102,000

V6 diesel

Aircon a con (not cold)

Door mirrors a bit sticky so reluctant to fold

On an idle the engine seems a bit more tappy on the left bank than the right but it is very subtle.  I will need to figure out why.  I only noticed with my head one foot above the engine so I doubt it is an issue.

Basic warranty (28 days on engine / transmission only)

Everything else looked great.

The colour is absolutely gorgeous.  There are two dark blues available which are Pacific blue and Indigo Blue. This one is Indigo. This interior is lovely as well.

The dealer was nice, polite very unpushy.

He gave me the keys and said I could go as far and for as long as I liked and he did not need to accompany.

SWMBO loved it and said to bid £7500.

I actually bid £7000 and he went off to discuss with the manager and came back with £7200.

The car is still with them as I need to go back on the train or something and do a collection.

Will report back if I'm not thrown out of the site for buying non-shite.

I always ask on big purchases such as a to or fridge but it's always on the lines of x does it for £this much, if you can beat that I will have it from you. What usually happens is the manager puts it through on staff discount and everyone is happy. It works 3 out of 4 times I reckon but never on things like iPads or games type stuff.

Welcome to Maidstone!

Nice one with the negotiating, sounds like a fair deal.

Nice looking car and no reason not to haggle. I tend not to haggle on here as cars are cheap and I trust the folk on here and it has worked out well so far :).

Glad you got it and hope to see it one day :)

I never haggle for anything - I am too weedy at it.

I haven't bought that many cars from dealers, but I have attempted to buy a few cars from dealers, where I knew the price was way off. In the main, unless you have got off your arse and ended up on their forecourt they are NEVER going to discuss the possibility that they might be wrong. Emailing definitely will not work. A phone call will only get the fact that they might come down a little (like 2%). Also discussing guides and other dealers prices doesn't work.

The only thing that has ever worked is having your wife say she'd rather have the blue one/20 Valve one/the one with leather at their competitors, and walking away having given them your phone number.

By email they were offering me to change the timing belt, gearbox oil and filter (which is a whole new plastic sump on these) if I paid full price, so actually they did come down a fair bit.

If I had been a normal punter (i.e. not good with spanners) then this would have been quite a good deal.

I just prefer to do it myself as then I know it's done right.
