ICE ICE BABY (Trigger Warning: Contains scenes of really bad subwoofer installation)

So.. I've increased the number of speakers in the BX by 100%, which has done a lot to improve the sound system. A pair of magnificent Goodmans parcel shelf speakers were very kindly donated by djimbob, who also thrust this item into my hands:

He whipped it out of a Renault Clio that was being scrapped. The shape of it and the wiring connector leads me to believe it was standard equipment in the car as opposed to some RIPSPEED YO item. I opened it up for a better look, and it does indeed appear to be some sort of powered sub:

I can't find any info on the web, so I was hoping someone on here would know if this needs to be fed by some sort of crossover arrangement, or just from a line out on the head unit, and also some idea of what the pinouts are for the connector?

hmm... try Cliosport forum?

* likely they rip this out & use the plugin for some RIPSPEED YO $hite crossover BoomToob....

Once I've recovered from learning that the Clio has a forum dedicated to it I'll give them a try, thanks!

Ha! ... I frequent the Renault Forum (Savv has a Clio 1.2 16V D4F) for bits n pieces... Oh, and to really depress owners of s/h QS5* semi-auto Clios >> I explain how shite they are in Savvy.

*many parts from the 'parts bin' FIAT selespeed.

Any old speaker will work without the amp. Just bin the amp and connect ++\-- jobs a carrot you can listen to Steve rite in the afternoon

Nobody deserves that mate.

Are you wanting to use it as a powered unit or just a speaker?

If powered, probably has +/- electricity, a signal wire from the head unit for off/on, and a line in.

How many wires and what colours?

Posted

For a start that speaker is bi-wired, which is odd for a single subwoofer. It's got a red and black one side, and a yellow and blue the other. You might expect that for a full-range speaker, but not a sub.

Then you've got the issue of where you're getting a low level input from. If your head unit has a line out - perfect. If you've only got speaker outs on the ISO, then connecting those will result in either a horrible noise, or kitten-nun incidents. But probably the former.

At the very least it will need power (+/-), signal input (and if it's connecting to a line out, it probably has L+ L- and R+ R- so it can sum the bass from the left and right channels; if it's connecting to a specific Renault head unit then that might be done in the unit itself so it might just have Sub+ Sub-), and then probably some sort of switching wire so it can power the amp off, although it doesn't really look like a 10000KW monster so might forgo that in favour of just being powered on/off via the power wires.

Power will be easy to find - it'll be the one that connects to the fuse. Ground will be pretty simple too, it'll connect to loads of different components. The rest is where the fun starts.

So could you realy have the arsed to run a live from the head unit /fuse box to your door speakers?

I'd just look for an old metro in a knackers yard with some blaupunkts in the parcel shelf an draw a big cock on the Renault jobbies

Someone on Cliosport has correctly identified this item as having come from a Fiat Punto, so djimbob's memory might be playing tricks on him ;)

Either way, actually knowing what car it came from means that now all is revealed:

and I CAN HAZ BASS.

Aaah, simples! Power, ground, switched live shared with the aerial and it takes both rear speaker inputs.

Was mounted into house speaker box with wiring plug on back then place at side of boot with a bungee round it... i velcrod it then got bored and stuck 2000watts of subs and amps in there

You're speaking my language, dude. Ghetto ICE installs are my speciality.

djimbob gave me a pair of grim Aiwa bookshelf speakers too:

Look at the tweeter! Rubbish innit... but the main speaker is the same size as the one in that Fiat sub

Fits like a glove!

Araldited the amp into the bottom of the misery-spec chipboard cabinet:

Bit of strengthening:

Had at it with the hole saw and now we have wiring!

Time for a brew... not in work till 2 so I might get this done today!

The cabinet is a right POS, it's only held together at the corners with staples

My guess would be dual coil sub - like my old Celestion substation - intended for where you only have a stereo feed available .  It was probably cheaper to source a stereo amp module and use this.  Can be wired in parallel if needed - although that will lower the impedance of course.

Bloody hell, this speaker has a greater computing power than the rest of the car put together!

It was all going really well until I tried to put the front back on and the retaining lip on one side of the shitty chipboard cabinet crumbled. This left me with two choices:

1) Get the other speaker and repeat the entire process, only this time without breaking it

2) Find a nearby piece of metal, some self-tappers and bodge it

IMG_20160422_180231_zpsi0ph0sz4.jpg

I wouldn't do work like this on the car itself, but this is just a manky speaker that's going in the boot where no-one will see it.

Nice work!

I keep fancying a better ICE setup. The factory speakers are dire, and probably have burst cones after a year in my ownership.

Well, it's in and works a treat. I just need to stop it being thrown around the boot now...

 with a bungee round it...

Of course! Why else would Citroën have put those D-rings behind the rear seats?

Top work with those high quality items I just knew would enhance your BX driving experience 8)

Also, apologies for the incorrect info, it was indeed off a Punto - plainly my mind was protecting me from any memories of owning italian shite, although wtf was it doing substituting for French??

I have since purchased two LG surround sound tower speakers from the charidee shop for fuck all and three cds thrown in, claiming to have 140 watts of pure power to beef up one of my motaz, I'm considering the Transit, but should probably get it thru it's test first :-P

Domestic household speakers in one's motor vehicle are for winners :-D

A long time ago one of my mates built in an early, Sony microsystem thing into the centre console of his SD3. Decidedly weird looking, but sounded ace.

That's a nice custom ICE job. You wouldn't know it's not factory fit!

And just to finish it off, a touch of class bringing the total cost of the install to £1.49

With the car's original speakers in the front faded down it all sounds pretty good - well pleased.

I run an old pair of 90's Aiwa 6" hifi speakers in the BX (very similar to those). The sound is phenomenal in something I can just lift out.

Domestic hifi speakers in cars are definite for winnahs, particularly for bass!
