Mot type question- headlight washers

Yo

Y plate Lexus thingy.

Do the headlight washers need to work, even if not there?

Cos ours don't, and it seems easier to remove, than repair. Or can I just ignore them?

Pretty sure they're not covered by the regs, working or not.

EDIT: No, I'm completely wrong (as is often the case):

This is listed as a reason for failure

A headlamp levelling or cleaning device inoperative or otherwise obviously defective.

So just take 'em off then.

^^^ Only applies to cars with factory fitted HID lamps. Lexus will have halogens so the headlight washers aren't tested.

Guys, Ta muchly . They will both be excommunicated ASAP.

Nice to have a no cost option repair for once!

Nigel, you can leave them alone for a no effort no cost solution to your not a problem! ;)

My Volvo has HID headlamps and the washers haven't worked in ages - still seems to pass MOTs without them, so I guess it depends on how strict the tester is!

Maybe the tester hasnt realised it's got HIDs?

What about after market kits, despite their questionable legality anyway, I assume they should fail because of it? Or is it a case of, if fitted, it has to work?

Much like Junkman demands a working interior light, if I have inoperative headlight washers then they will be fixed.

This is not a MOT issue, nor a roadworthiness issue. It is simply that they are the peak in motor vehicle technology, and without them you are nobody.

I think it's the only thing I fixed on the ex-Cavcraft, ex-Stephen01 Saab. Clearly the sump was full of treacle and the brakes sounded like fingernails on a blackboard, but the headlamp washers worked after my ownership and thus I am a WINNER.

Isn't there a clause somewhere about anything fitted having to work?

I am sure many a tester would not be too worried about them, and be displaying a good sense of proportion in the process.

Some people raise the bar...some people walk underneath.

and some of us lean against it to avoid falling over.

It depends what it is.  You wouldn't get very far removing knackered brakes to swizz your way through the test, but I once removed the back seat from a Range Rover to avoid it failing on rotten seatbelt mounts and the towbar from a Defender so the very crunchy rear crossmember wouldn't be testable.

The MOT station I go to has a good 'sense of proportion' - I've been a customer for years and they know that I'll DIY easy jobs and only give them the horrible ones.

I once got an advisory for a drop arm balljoint on my 110 (that I'd asked them to change) because their 20 ton puller had previously failed to shift the arm and they didn't fancy doing it in situ - they even laughed as they handed the certificate over.

They've never worked on my w124 and it's always passed with no advisories. I'm not fussed enough to spend a hundred quid to get replacements.

Mine didn't work for years before I fixed them (1992 Jag) - never once mentioned.

One of the few things I fixed on my Laguna 2.

Lag2 washers were most certainly for HIDs though, so should have been an MOT fail. Just to make it even easier for testers Renault helpfully* wrote Xenon into the light surround. I know my Grandads 2002 lag 2 failed on it.

it helps to illuminate the road clearly so the RAC know where to park.
