Wheel refurb advice?

I need to sort someone to refurb all the alloys on my partner's new beetle, well 56 plate actually so will be in shite territory in a few more years. Two of them are quite badly corroded, a third less so and the other one's not too bad. They must have been a bad design or poor coatings as I've seen a lot in similar condition. It's like the laquer has peeled off? I'll get them all done so they match. We're using it as our wedding car in august so I want it to look half decent. Does anyone know anywhere near to Leicester? Also how much are we talking? I know it's not cheap and will probably cost the same as buying a few shite cars!

Steels? If corrosion is really bad they can be ready for the bin, otherwise they'll just strip and powder as normal.

My place up norf does them for around £20-£25 per wheel for small sizes, £40-£50 per wheel for 17" and up.

56 Beetle?

It's these isn't it...

One of those lacquered metal designs or whatever they are - they corrode when the lacquer chips and salt etc gets into them as there's nothing protecting the metal. Accord Coupés suffer from it badly. Not sure what the remedy is but a wheel place will know.

Price wise, I'd be looking to budget £50/wheel. To have some kerbing sorted out and (badly) blown over on two 16" Bini wheels cost us £100ish if memory serves, and to have four 17"s relieved of tyres, stripped back, and powder coated in standard silver has cost us £168.

The prices above seem about right. I had the wheels on my ST refurbed a couple of months ago, kerb damage sorted and then sprayed black for £170 all in.

I should have said they're alloys, not steels.

Can't open that link Ghosty. They're like these ones. If I can get them done for less than £200 I'll be happy. I need to find new centre caps too. Anyone know anywhere near Leicester?

Look up City Powder Coaters Birmingham, very very cheap but obviously you'll need to get them there or take the car there complete and spend the day in B'ham whilst they do the job, they do offer remove/refit tyre service and same day which not all do, haven't used them mind so can't comment on quality but you could probably search for reviews, doubt you're going to get Pristine Wheels finish at those prices and nor would i expect to.

Another place in B'ham i have used is LapTab (possibly renamed now), i have used them in the past when i used to pass by every day in a lorry so was able to drop off/collect easily, not cheap but first class job, site is on A38 just north of spagetti jct.

Place in Northampton on St James Mill Road did our Subaru wheels, good job roughly £50 each.

Had an alloy on my daily driver refurbed recently - a 19" one on a Mondeo. Fully re-painted and lacquered it cost £60 plus tyre fitting and balancing. Spiffy chrome/diamond cut alloys may cost more though.

another vote for city powder coaters, I had a set done for my mx5 for £80 and they were very good. They also do a drive in drive out service if it's hard for you to get the wheels and tyres off yourself.

Since when did a Mundano have 19" rims? Really?

If you want them redone diamond cut if they were lacquered alloys from factory, that's also an option.

But then it's £100 a wheel.

had any experience of gettin' that done either around Teesside or York?

the Jaguars wheels are diamond cut, and i would like to get them re-done as they are looking tired.

£100 a wheel is a lot! If it were my car, not my partners, i'd just drive it as it is and spend the money on more important things such as a whole car. Might be better to find 4 secondhand wheels in better condition?

Not locally, but I used The Wheel Specialist in Leeds and they did a bang up job.

They're a franchise but are really good and held to a high standard.

Thanks for that, nice to hear someone known has had good results there, i haven't seen as cheap advertised anywhere.

for the money they are brilliant. If I had a £50,000,000 Ferrari I probably wouldn't use them, but for an everyday car they are spot on. There are a range of standard colours at the lower price then the fancy colours are a bit more. The standard colours would cover anything that isn't corsachav standard.

City powder coaters here too had about 15 sets done over last 2 years 20 a rim bare 30 a rim with tyre remove and refit standard turnaround a week but can be squeeze in faster. Standard colours are silver anthracite black and white all metallic and flips available at extra cost he has a contact for diamond cutting aswell but never asked cost

That's the wheel I was thinking of, yep.

19" Mondeo wheels are from 07-on Titaniums.

Yep. Mine's a Titanium X. Given the car's so big, they don't look as massive as you might expect.

I know. I is chav, innit?

I do have a piece of worthless shite in my fleet as well though - the Mondeo's just what I use everyday for work miles.

The trouble with diamond cut and laquered is that a full recut refurb will only see one or two salty winters before new spiders webs appear again, you could in theory be spending £400 every other year just keeping the wheels up to scratch, and the trouble is diamond cut look shit unless perfect.

I understand that some Merc owners, mostly stuck with these bloody things have had normal refurbs done, but with the new chrome paints, the effect isn't that far from OE apparently, and lasts as long as any proper refurb then.

Daughter brought her brand new Civic type R round in the week, fuck me its on black 19" alloys with a red painted coach line round the outside of the rim, 19" with 35 aspect tyres, them there wheels are gunna be piss easy* to care for and they'll never* scrape a kerb.
