2 quid well spent

Recommended Posts

Went to see a car today, spent my 2 quid to do a quick check, turns out it was cat c. Owner was gutted. I loved his comment about 'still knowing where the guy lives' but he was a damn site calmer than I would have been.

Worth doing even on a cheap motor.

Knowing what the car is I would still not hesitate getting it.

Me neither, but price won't be close to what it was going to be.

I had this with an ebay motor I was looking at, though it was the seller who had accepted the insurance monies, yet still wanted to resell it.  My insurer wouldn't touch it without a VIC.  The seller was incredulous that he just couldn't sell it after taking the cash, keeping the car and making it impossible to insure as is.

This one is recorded as having been vic checked, the owner has been using it for three years without realising. It surprises me that people don't check the v5 before or do a two quid check before they buy but some people are just too trusting. I feel really sorry for the guy, he seems a really nice bloke. He didn't see the v5 before he bought it and new keeper supplement doesn't show it so I suppose it's easy enough to miss.

I have only once ran an hpi check as I usually just buy on trust,

I met the seller at the metro centre and the car was excellent the guy was sound but I had a strange niggling feeling and even though i had a pocket full of money I came home empty handed and did an hpi,

The chassis and reg number came back as being cat B and the car was crushed in 92, the seller said he knew nothing about that and that he had bought it at auction, I have bought hundreds since and never encountered that feeling again.

The weird thing is I only normally do it when I have decided to the buy the car but this time I ran the check before I went, never done that before and never had one come back scrapped before. Ooey ooey ooey........

I'm having issues with the Cupra at the mo

I did the checks beforehand and all came back as clean.

No claims,no insurance interest ect ect

Had a letter from the Dvla asking for photos of the various vin plates, reg plates and the details of the previous owner

Still waiting for an answer from them, and no v5 as yet.......

Still showing as clear on various car check sites so just hanging.on now......

I must admit cat c wouldn't bother me if it was declared. Unlike the bitch who sold me the MG ZT and had me fill in the pre write off V5 without the marker on, I did get the last laugh though as I got the tax refund. I would never run a check on a sub 1k car as I am a tight bastard so just check the V5. This insurance thing is a new one on me though I sold my 206 the other week and had 2 punters backed out as they said their insurance companies wouldn't cover it, but I have never been asked. Just buy on condition there are probably a lot worse cars on the roads without a marker on them.

will show you once it's done and dusted, guy seems genuine and we have shaken hands on it and arranged delivery (although I am trying to sort something a bit quicker) but he didn't want a deposit.

I had a feeling about my disco and paid for a check after agreeing a price but before handing over the dosh. Turned out it was cat D.

I still bought it but the price changed.

Anything under £1000, and I wouldnt be worrying about cat C or D. Hell, I only found out my 96 Hilux was a Cat D when the fella buying it from me hpi'd it and wanted to know why I hadn't told him. I genuinely hadn't checked and wasn't aware, but knew that a mk3 Hilux in clean condition was always going to sell for decent money regardless, hence holding my ground and not offering a discount. He still bought it.

Where does one spend this £2 you speak of?

there are a few, I use my car check as its only £1.99, if you buy a pack of five for a tenner you get more info but I never bother.

Have just purchased a Cat C MG ZT from a well known chap on here.... No issues with insurance. No idea what the incident was or why it was written off.... How do you find out? VIC check done and V5c issued etc. Not worried.

I might have to run a check on the A4 tbh, I know it's been bumped at some point from all the filler and self tappers in the front bumper. It's on Street View near the previous but one owner's house in Luton missing the lower front grille.
