Comparing the Monty with the Chevalier and Sierra. Good luck with that lads.  :-(

A prelude to another Austin Rover Group (AAARG!) defeat/jaws of victory cock up. Shame as it could have been so good.

Robert Lindsay before he became a luvvie partial to the Murdoch pound, testing his acting skills to the max.

Anyway...........

....this one is much better. It's obvious that BL tried their hardest to get it right.

The first one is a fantastic find. Much as I wanted to laugh when the Montenegro was in a stand-off with a mk2 Cav, I was genuinely surprised when th spec list was compared, and the Monty came out on top. Just a shame it was gobshite in every other way.

Nice video, I liked the GameBoy quality synth music near the start, very period.

It's clear so much effort went into the car and the campaign but I just doubt that the real salesman were as confident in the car as the one in the video was.

Mind you, it has illuminated column stalks and adjustable seatbelt height so they're winning the spec war.

It's a great training video assuming your customer plays the game and asks the right questions.

It also shows how simple things used to be, when you could confidently mention the "S series power unit" and go into no more detail where now you need to know the advantages and benefits of sixteen different bits of made up technology just to describe why your 1.6 petrol engine is better than their 1.6 petrol engine.

I do wonder, if we've come that far in 30 years, what the next thirty years will bring. Not intended to be an "OMG ALL FUTURE CARS WILL BE SHITTER" rant, but to my little brain we've already invented all the conveniences man could need. We've gone from an adjustable seatbelt height, to fuggin iDrive and keyless and radar cruise control and IR cameras.

Hey! Mr Griffiths the caretaker from Grange Hill and Brian Capron at the end of the sales video who appeared in loads of stuff too as well as Grange Hill and Minder.

It shows how ugly and out of proportion the Montego was - too narrow, too tall and nothing seems to match. I worked at an ARRRGG dealership in '86 and the Montego had earned itself a rubbish reputation. They pissed oil out, various electrical gremlins and seeing them in the body shops in bits showed that they were rusting nicely. By that point, Father Bluejeans' A reg Sierra had already done 100'000 totally reliable miles.

You do wonder why BL couldn't get the basic stuff right. How hard could it have been?

Lack of investment funds, mainly; coupled with a tradition of re-using stuff for ages (hence the Morris Minor style suspension). Shite management, warring factions internally.

I always liked the Montego much more than the sierra or cavalier.

Also I see more montegos around here than the sierra or cavalier of the same vintage

They did drive well, it has to be said. the 2.0i MG was a very nice thing to punt around and the diesel estates legendary.

True - I had a loaner for a week and it was fine. Mate bought a diesel off his dad and did eleventy million motorway miles in it at warp factor 80 - he got a totting up ban for speeding in it.

We did a family holiday when I was a teenager in a hired late Countryman estate up in the peak district. Little sister in the rear facing back seats. My memories of it are very positive!

Video reminds me of the training day epsiode of the Office.

I don;t think I've ever seen an O-series with a cam cover like that one in the second film, looks most unusual

The Oh! Series wasn't too bad. The S* Series certainly was. Why have one cam cover when two will do? They also had chronic condensation problems on the Peugeot style oil filler tube. Why just have a screw on oil filler cap on the cam cover like everyone else when a seperate metal tube will do? They got so bad that AAAARRGH! issued a thick wrap of foam with cable ties to insulate it. The S Series was never that great really - the 2.0 was the one to have.

Ah, see I always got the different series a bit confused.

I remember the early 1.6 MG Maestro came with either R or S series. When I worked in the parts place before VIN look up when you had to actually know things the way to remember the difference was that the R series was fitted aRse about face.
