Anyone had a DAF t Experience?

In my seach for the Holy Grail of automatic cars I once had a DAF44 didn.t go that fast something to do with worn belts lovely smell of rubber though. THEN IT STOPPED!

This section of Autoshite is for non-motoring topics.  A broken DAF is taking it too literally.  (now moved by the officials :-) )

In the 1990s I owned two Volvo 66s (really just DAF66s with big bumpers).  Apart from a diaphragm spring which I had to replace in one of the pulleys - surprisingly easy to do - the automatic bits worked well.  MPG was poor for a smallish engine, probably because variomatics like to keep the engine at quite high revs except when cruising, and the belt system has considerable running friction, so much so that cooling ducts run from the front of the car right back to the transmission.  Both of my 66s died with terminal rust in the rear floor pan.  I still regard them as quirky but characterful cars.

Had a 44 for a short spell. the damn thing was like sitting in a Big D**** it vibrated that much! Only good thing about mine was the stainless steel wipers. Still get that tingling feeling when I see one though

Have had a 33, 44 and 46 and a couple of 66's.

Quirky but very entertaining cars that are creeping up in price now.

Owned a 66 estate , bought it for £35 in the early 2000s

Regret selling it, the only thing I remember that took getting used to is the engine pitch/rpm didn't directly translate into speed/acceleration

it ended up going to ROI to make use of their more favourable classic car ownership rules

Edit: just remembered another quirk. It took me ages to find the fuel filler (behind the flap down rear number plate)

Given that I know every one* round here...109landys3 was yours a Volvo 66 estate in poo brown?

They were quite successful rally cars I believe; maybe the Variomatic transmission helped keep them going in the mud.

Some bloke came to buy my old one and wanted it for ice rallying. At least I think that's what he was saying as he was pretty hard to understand.

"Murh.....murg....warble......ice rallying.......gurgh........garble......urm.......bettter than a Porsche......murh.....murg....warble

He never got back in contact with us though and we sold it to a postmaster from Lincolnshire who did not have it long and I believe it ended up being taken over to Ireland.

They really are an absolute hoot to drive. I would love another one someday.

I've not encountered that one here yet, but I do remember it aeons ago on the bay. A really early 66 base model (well non-Super Luxe) with crappy front drum brakes.

I recognise the 44, but not seen it yet wearing Irish plates.

What I really don't want is ANOTHER 340 vario as I've already got THREE, plus ONE spares along with TWO more (a 1.4 4sp and a 1.6 5sp)

If that's not clear, the answer is NO!

I'll vouch for the fact that he has errr, a few.

Don't know if he resides here, but there used to be a fella on the blue forum (Paul iirc?) who was near on fanatical about them. Last thing I heard he'd bought a Triumph Spitfire, then everything went quiet.

Had the option of having a 46 estate on long term loan,i took it back after one day.shite.

I had a 33 van. Good load space but little power to move it when full. Best thing off road short of a 4 wheel drive. No fuel gauge, just a yellow light to say you're about to get some exercise.

It's downhill all the way from here, at 7 years old it had lots of rot and issues with pipes rotting so I sold it and had a succession of similarly afflicted Euro junk until I finally realised that you can get a similar breakdown experience with UK built cars but actually find the parts cheaply to make them go again.

One day is twice as long as you usually keep a car Dan ;)

They're still really, really cheap compared to other popular* 1960s-1970s cars.

A "project" Mini is £1K nowadays, and the ones appearing on ebay seem only fit for the frag machine. For a couple hundred more, one can buy a really minty B-body DAF !
