320touring Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 My good lady's younger cousin aka "the button" rang last night to inform me of the untimely demise of her Merc e280.. It was bought as a stopgap car in Aug 2015 for 350 queens heads (https://fuguttycars.wordpress.com/2015/08/06/sanity-runs-in-the-family-teachin-the-bairn-about-barges/) and did sterling service as a mile muncher/surf board transporter until it shat a balljoint yesterday.. with the MOT being due in April, and garage/parts costs high (she lives 8hrs north of here, so I can't pop up n fix) the decision to scrap has been taken. she needs a daily driver something along the lines of: Sub £500Longish MOT (Sept onwards)no major mechanical issues-(happy if it needs discs/pads etc as I can do them)4dr/hatchback or estate preferred. not fussed re colour/miles/dents etc.. what have you got? ta!
eddyramrod Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 I'm very tempted to offer the Saab, but it only has MoT into June.

djimbob Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 When you say "shat a balljoint", I assume in a real and damaging other component's way? Otherwise I don't understand the decision not to mend and proceed onwards and upwards if so, new car purchasing is a fine and upstanding enterprise and i wish you all the best eddyramrod and Lacquer Peel 2
Barry Cade Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 is it selt?I haz intrest frm shitr. Who contacted me through the written word with perfect spelling and grammar. Not what I expected from a prospective Zafira owner. 8 hours North of here? That's Scapa Flow isn't it? Amphicar? aldo135 1
eddyramrod Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 http://autoshite.com/topic/22408-swoopy-seconds/That's the thread, it's the 2001 9-5 turbo estate I won from Mr Moog. 2.3 petrol manual, leather interior, thick end of 200k on the clock, goes like greased manure off a freshly-buttered shovel. I can't remember how much tax is but I know I only paid for 6 months. It's laid-up at the moment pending arrival of a coil pack I've just bought off ebay. Should be home by Easter, I'm hoping.
DodgyBastard Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Don't suppose you've ever heard of Gumtree? I find setting a max price of say £500 and then browsing the cars in a 30 mile radius turns up the best results. Lacquer Peel 1

I find setting a max price of say £500 and then browsing the cars in a 30 mile radius turns up the best results.90% of them will be that place in Kirkcaldy. I went in for a nosey. Thought I was in UpullIt.... There's an idea, Upullit have some runners- even a Z4 and an S type this morning!

djimbob Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 In a classic "fucked the wheel/wing/trackrod end" way That would do it
320touring Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 That would do it seems alarmimgly common on the w124/210- Lord Sterling and some others have suffered a similar fate
Barry Cade Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 seems alarmimgly common on the w124/210- Lord Sterling and some others have suffered a similar fateBecause they're not checked properly- need to be checked for lift and not side to side play. Lever under the wheel shows it up. Upper spring seats collapse on the 210 as well......
320touring Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 Good to know re how to check! oddly enough all 3 i have knowledge of (2 on here plus the car at start of this thread) all failed at low speed.. seems low speed+ decent sized bump= gone.

Jack the wheel an inch off the ground on the wishbone and get a shovel under the tyre and "rock" the shovel. You may well be surprised. Every Merc I've had, has had bad balljoints.

Is it a dear job to sort/difficult for Shiter? had my eye on a few of these over last couple of years, seems a lot of barge for fuck all
Six-cylinder Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Is the BX Estate of many any good to you now it is MOTed 4th march 2017? Oh yes a successful ebay bid tonight has led me to consider it could move on.

Junkman Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 My good lady's younger cousin aka "the button" rang last night to inform me of the untimely demise of her Merc e280.. I thought German cars are soooooo good and never break? I'd start skimming the web for Peugeot 405s, but despite I'm always right, nobody will listen to me, as usual. Skizzer, Lacquer Peel, eddyramrod and 1 other 4

There's an idea, Upullit have some runners- even a Z4 and an S type this morning! What's the deal with that Kirkcaldy place? Is it a scrappy? Always seems to have loads of short mot or no mot cars on gumtree. aldo135 1
trigger Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 I thought German cars are soooooo good and never break? It's not just limited to Mercs that do it either, this was in the works car park a couple of years ago. Lacquer Peel 1
Barry Cade Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Is it a dear job to sort/difficult for Shiter? had my eye on a few of these over last couple of years, seems a lot of barge for fuck all It's a bit of a pain, they are pressed in and Fookin tight. There is a special tool (of course) but its a good few quid. Doable, but hassle. DO NOT heat Merc balljoints.....

Not a scrappy, but I think that's where most of them come from. Best cut out the middle man and just go to the Scrappy. Nobles are selling cars now too from their new place in Randolph, they look pretty decent. drum 1
