A grand? Those days are over now. They've started shooting up in price. Even with the crash damage, knackered paintwork and 30k miles I've plonked on it, it's worth a lot more than I paid for it.

I remember using a 32mm headset spanner (for bicycle headset bearings) to undo the viscous fan on my 320i.

 

The thermostat housing came off in a very similar fashion, but the housing itself looks different. My housing was fine, but the thermostat itself was stuck open. Also, your aux belt looks worse than mine did when I replaced it!

It's worth removing the two rollers, picking the seals out and fingering a bit of new grease into the bearings. They can get a bit growly.

 

The pre 1999MY single Vanos cars are a much better bet. They are simpler and more reliable, easier to work on and, for some reason, they rust less as well.

Seeing as I got £1700 for it when it got written off, yes I would say so. The occasional bargains are still out there though.

Today, at 1pm, I booked an MOT for Herman, after trying several local garages, this place had an opening at 2pm today, so I quickly checked the lights and headed straight over

 

 

So, 45 minutes later, Herman came out with a pass, a few advisories to sort out when time allows but nothing strenuous and nothing that will be an issue for now. Not bad for a car that has had zero preparation for the inspection!
