I sprayed some WD40 in the lock and turned it a few times and it opens the lock now, must've been jammed.

Things I never knew about this car:

 

  • It's a non turbo - it's like driving a small engined car
  • It fucking stinks (inside)
  • The 'fresh air' versus the 'stale air' switch is stuck on 'stale air' - the button results in a loud cracking sound from the glovebox resulting in the ambience of a 'fart in a jar'
  • The clutch has that judder from standstill that some of these XUD's have (from my experience)
  • Under the Xsara mat in the passenger footwell has a 1cm thick pile of mud
  • The central locking only works on the passenger side door (bonus Autoshite point)
  • The thermostat doesn't fucking work
  • The rear windows are tinted with black spray paint
  • It has an ancient stereo wedged halfway in the dashboard
  • The aerial has long since departed the car
  • Fuck me, it needs a wash
  • And a hoover!
  • I hadn't eaten all day so the combusting chip fat had my stomach eating itself
  • The heater blower direction cable is seized, so is only blowing cold air into the heavens/windscreen - you can adjust this by simply taking the entire dashboard panel off.

 

I reached home shivering as if I'd just looked in the rear view mirror and viewed the menacing ghost of Jimmy Saville looming in the darkened boot space.

 

I feel ill from the cold and the stench, and can smell it on my clothes.

 

Apart from that though, the ride is superbé. Like the 306, it has ageless styling. It has AC (which probably doesn't work), it also doesn't have that stiff clutch pedal thing. It has all it's wheel trims, and all the interior bulbs work.

It has a towbar with the ball missing (probably for MOT on wiring) which is what I was hoping as I can collect half an RX7 shell tomorrow on a trailer.

Bummer about the thermostat, I've yet to buy a diesel where it's been working.

 

 

 

 

 

I had a quick look at the faults, the teeth are missing off the cogs that operate the interior/exterior air flap:

Mileage NULL

 

 

 

No doubt will be for sale next week after I've fixed everything.

As much as I could be assed doing this, I bought some new tools, so I decided to change the wheel bearings on my 406:

 

Look at them, the dust cover had completely disintegrated, and my balls were completely exposed to the elements, leaving them dry and clattering about freely:

The circlip had completely rusted in place. It's a big mutha, so had to cut it out in four places with a Dremel:

Good work, was there a lot of play in your balls? Did the car get an MOT over the phone?

Great save Staysh. Nice timeless colour on that, does the saloon carpets fit in these? I'd probably change it over to be honest.

Hey all - I got the clutch for this. It looks like the pull type. I take it this is the wrong (frigging) one?

It only took a week to arrive.

That is indeed a pull-type clutch.

 

At least some of the 1.9TD 406's used that type of clutch though, so might well be correct.

 

If you can get decent look at the top of the box showing the clutch arm it'll be easy to confirm which type it is - the pull-type clutch (ie the type you've bought) has a bracket on the front of the box and pulls the clutch arm towards the front of the car as you depress the clutch, whereas the push-type clutch has no bracket and pulls the clutch arm backwards towards the bulkhead as you depress the clutch pedal.

 

This shows the 1.9TD gearbox with the pull-type clutch setup and the bracket I mentioned.

Firstly, nice work

 

Mine oddly enough doesn't seem to have the clutch judder; the offside sill is crunchy, nearside seems to be OK. my heater controls all work too, but the central locking is all to cock - drivers side lock is siezed solid and the nearside one now just turns the barrel so I tend to go in via the boot.

 

MOT history suggets offside was welded prior to passing 2016 MOT

 

Ps - i'm spending too much time checking random car MOTs...

No time like the present!

 

I've got everything off, which wasn't that bad tbh.

I don't think it's the clutch, but the intermediate bearing on the driveshaft mount. The fact there was a single ball bearing in it and it was seized solid makes me think about it being a bit Judders from a standstill. The flywheel and clutch cover plate are like mirrors, due to having to slip the clutch to get it going.

Fuck me X 5000000.55!

I've heard these pull clutches are difficult to get right.

Imagine the task of lining up a gearbox anyway, but having to make sure the daft thrust bearing attached to the clutch cover is orientated up-down, while the clutch lever arms have to be precisely on in the correct position delicately slide behind the thrust bearing, and then slide the input shaft INTO the thrust bearing, without rotating it a degree.

You have a 1cm X 3cm to view all this which is obscured by a thick loom of 2000 wires sitting on top of it. This has to be harder than disarming a bomb surely? I can't possibly envisage me getting this sadistic French puzzle right even if I tried for the next two years non stop. This should be one of the rooms in The Saw!

 

Fuck you Peugeot Citroen you pox-ridden fucking cunts. My mind is imploding at the possibility of getting this right. Jesus Christ!

I don't get beaten that easily.

 

The photos show the pin on the clutch fork suddenly seizing and couldn't be removed with industrial sized heat, big hammers, welding, air chisel, etc. So much heat in fact it melted the plastic bush halfway down the shaft. As a consequence, no matter how much fluid I drained out of the box, there was always a massive puddle wherever I put the gearbox overnight.

I've since drilled the pin out, found the arm was also welded on (even though I've had both off several times during this particular clutch change), so I cut it off and put a new arm and pin in, and a brand new bush as well.

All three linkage ballpoint arms broke, so I changed them as well. Bolts on one of the arb links seized and span the balljoints, so I cut it off and put a new one on. Also changed the speedo cable because it was worn and catching at the throttle end.

Oh, something else which brought a tear to my eye - the speed sensor thing that plops in the top of the gearbox and sits over the flywheel teeth, it ended up trapped INSIDE the gearbox when I'd put everything back together again, which required me to take everything apart again. TWICE. I thought I'd leave it in and let it get devoured by the flywheel, but that probably would've broken something important. The sensor was also broken, so I etc etc etc

 

The culprit was the bearing on the driveshaft seizing, so the clutch change was completely un-fucking-necessary.

I've fixed everything now, and it drives SO much better without that juddering, and to be fair on the car, it does drive really nice and it was worth it I suppose.

 

On my trips to the scrappies, I noticed the 405 gearbox has little viewing slats on the front to see the thrust bearing hanging off the clutch after you've put it back together again, and HDI has a little plastic panel to do the same, even though it has the normal thrust bearing. Argh!
