Collectioneering - Moogs Mootahs

The Moog

Recommended Posts

Having driven this for a couple of days I thought it bloody lovely. Waffty with a nice bit of oomph

and shit loads of room in the back.

I like practical vehicles. Airbed in the back for Shitefest. Tip truck, etc.

Mind you from a 305 van to a 406 is a huge jump for me, so my opinion may be worthless.

The centre display needs bulbs. It pops out the dash. There is a little dial on the side to change features too so if you change wiper stalk to a multi function one and add a few wires to the dash you will have a fully functional trip computer. The mileage bulb I guess the dash needs to come out. Regards smoke smell, yes I can get to blame but it had a lot more odd odours when I first got it. I also gave it a quick clean but nothing too extravagant. Mainly to get rid of multiple dog hairs. The idle issue went then came back then went again and I never did find it. The two rear tyres are middle of the road tyres, not budget but not top spec and only have around 1.5k on them. Thanks for mentioning shockers too. I did have my suspicions about the rears. With the towbar and dog hairs and smells when I got it I assume it's done a bit of dragging in its life. That sill was actually only an advisory at last test too

I think idle is air leak. There is a bit of roughness sometimes under acceleration.

Will stick some clear hose on it to check for bubbles.

Overall very happy with the car, although must remember it isn't an mx5 - found myself going a bit cheekily too fast into bends.

It don't handle too bad but the back end tends to pogo. That's another reason I think the back shocks are bollocksed

Feels like a hovercraft compared to the MX!

It was a decent enough car, I probably shouldn't have gotten rid of it but letting it go brought me a step closer to fitting the twin cam engine in the lada.

I swapped it for the 340, sold it and used the money to buy the engine.

I can also confirm the car smelled when I got it, I don't smoke or have a dog either so tried to cover up the smell with air fresheners, not that it really helped.

Tickman told me that mx5 needed new discs and pads when I collected it.

Today I thought I would while the wheels off and have a look as it is booked on to knockhill next Saturday.

First off my SGS jack decided to stop jacking. It would only get to 20cm high then stop. Bled it and checked the oil, but no cigar. Sent off email to customer service to see if they can get it replaced.

Back to the widow maker jack that came with the car and axle stands.

I think Mr T Man was correct in his assessment - disc and pads order from Euros to be collected tomorrow.

They easily passed the MOT at that too which shows how little they are expected to do.

Are you putting fresh pads in the front as well? They had plenty of material on them and were decent quality ones.

Spent the morning in glorious sunshine sorting the rear brakes on mx5

They seem to do not a lot but we're definitely ripe for renewal. Went for Brembo pads and Eicher discs as that is what I have used before on puma.

The screw adjuster at the handbrake perplexed me. I spent 20 minutes undoing it but the piston didn't move. Then this fell out.

And the car had a little cry

c494e7576c0f5efd15f9e13816cdcbb0.jpg

Learning from previous mistakes I took a break and had a cup of tea.

Google said that you need to put pressure on piston at the same time. So that I did to joyous success.

Looked like it was on the home straight except getting the pads, anti rattle shims and these flipping W spring clips in. Many many swear words were used.

Ultimately after two hours this occured

Took it out for a spin and noticed absolutely zero difference! Still at least I know they are done. With have a look at fronts tomorrow.

I do need to tighten the handbrake up a touch as I think I backed it off a bit too much.

Emboldened by a cup of tea I decided have a look at the 406s lumpy idle and hesitation. The white smoke at startup pointed to air in the fuel.

Cleaned off the muck on the see through pipe to have a look as it idled.

Hard to see but it had bigger bubbles than Jackos old monkey.

Usually this is the fuel filter housing leaking air, they can be a bugger to seal. Rooting through garage I found my bits from the old Xantia. Clear hose, fuel clips and disposable fuel filter.

Here's one I made earlier

I do need to get a proper filter to fit. Any recommendations?

I know chompy snake (ex of this parish) fitted BMW filter to the white xantia which worked well but is £25 a filter.

Moved on to the air filter - Bub mentioned the screws were rusted. He wasn't joking - left handed screw extractor applied but that didn't work.

Will try drilling it otherwise might see if I can track down new airbox lid.

Remember to order the bigger discs and pads for a 1.8 model, I upgraded them from the smaller 1.6 size.

Yep Tickman told me that, so ordered the right bits.

Today I have fiddled with all of the fleet.

First off mx5 new (old one of eBay) wheel fitted.

Squeak has gone, but so has indicator cancelling.

Also checked front pads in prep for track day and they looked ready to go

Next job was cleaning pug. No photos but much cleaner and emptied can of oust into the car to improve the whiff.

Finally Getz time. The post cat O2 sensor was working so new one to be fitted.

Up in air

Here's the wee beastie

Unscrewed pretty easily

New and old

Checked length of cable, seems about right, so back together

Bugger. Didn't check plug

Took only sensible option and changed plugs over

Heat shrinked, then taped and back together

Took it for a run - I think that is success.

Whether it improves the mpg will remain to be seen.

Nice looking wheel :)

for the self cancelling indicators, make sure the two white plastic prongs on the steering column line up with the holes in the back of the boss - should be a nice easy fix.

That the springs in the top? If so I took them out when removing the caliper.

They are back in now.

Btw saw it had Hel brake lines, I take it they aren't standard

the U shaped wire ones that slot into the wee holes on the edge of the pads, that's the fellows. I'd forgotten about the hel brake lines, they definitely make a difference. I had them fitted by ak automotive down in Newcastle the same time I had the torsen diff installed, that was a hell of a drive home up the a68 :)
