Slight bit of fleet rearrangement today

Turbo Volvo is off to a new home


It literally has sat since I got it. Its going to a loving home in a three way swap including a car I don't technically own yet.

It left a little reminder on the way out

The only way this could sound more convoluted is if you'd agreed to buy back one of your old broken cars from the other end of the country to add into a multiswap deal with someone who didn't want the car a couple of days ago and is (supposedly) reducing their fleet.

The wee Mazda has been running rough so took the opportunity to plug it in to the laptop.

I had purchased a usb to serial adapter and Fatpirate had kindly let me have his Tunerstudio log in

At this point I couldn't get connected so took advantage of FP diagnostic help.

After checking ports and settings, I tried setting up a new project which worked.

Diagnostics sprang into life


I think the issue is obvious.


The O2 reading is well out of range. I am going to try recalibrate the sensor as they need doing every few months with turbo cars according to internet. If not then will probe further. There didn't seem to be any obvious air leaks

I think you will find that is supercharger use only... Turbos are much more delicate....


The software sets up the megasquirt so controls everything including fueling, spark, boost etc. I think you can even set launch control !

NM motahs had spare time this afternoon so I could have a look at the issue with the mx5.

 

It has been running incredibly lean and I couldn't see anything obvious

Reading online, you can recalibrate the wideband sensor which may have been the source of the issue.

 

 

Plug out and then Google consulted. Apparently leave it disconnected and then turn car back on. That didn't work. Bit more Google and the AFR sensor is an AEM one which is a superior brand and doesn't ever need calibration.

 

So all back together and a more traditional approach.

 

The air filter had been rubbing on air pipe so seamless patch applied

 

At this point I got the professional involved and we sprayed brake cleaner to find the leak.

 

Found a vacuum hose that was loose, so that fixed with no real impact.

 

We narrowed it down to inlet manifold. It looks like the gasket has gone as cleaner spray drastically reduced the air leak. It's only £10 for a proper mx5 one so will get it fitted.

 

 

In Billy bonus news I ordered a set of tyres for a car I don't own yet from demon tweeks yesterday with the 20% off. Got this message today.

 

 

And the oil leak on the turbo Volvo was fixed .... Just needed the oil filter tightened!

Saturday night... With no beer and rubbish on TV means car time.

 

Before Mr Monkey offered his massive torch, I had ordered a Renault 5 thermostats on advice of 320touring. It was delivered today, so took the opportunity to see if it would fit.

 

Having a browse online it was suggested to drill a 2mm hole in the stat to allow air to pass through.

 

Top hose off

 

Tried it dry and the stat was almost there but not quite.

 

Heat was applied

 

Little be of lube and some good thrusting before it popped in

 

Pushed down and then refitted

 

Topped up the water, tightened the clamps and took it for a spin.

 

Result!

 

Heaters are proper furnace like now, very much better. The car starts heating up before the end of the road, where as I could drive all the way to work on motorway and it was still cool.

 

 

I did have a mini moment of panic when I felt the front rad and it was stone cold.... Until I worked out that was the Aircon rad!

Very much so.


Last time I grinned this much was collecting the turbo mx5.

Journey home was easy, especially once the car had warmed up a bit. To start with it was a little sluggish and any attempt to make a quick getaway felt a bit pants.

Motorway meant it happily tootled at 70 ish.

By the time I pulled off into Accrington, I could light up the wheels easily and the car felt much more revvy than before.

No signs of a caliper sticking and the fuel went in easily enough once you turned the fuel nozzle to 9 o clock

I love it.

I now have to work out whether a fleet of Micra, mx5 and Smart is workable with 3 big dogs!

Ha! A good blast probably helped unstick it. Really sad to see it go, will have another prefacelift one some day.

I have seen that before. Tends to be the way, saves a significant amount of dosh if you can wait a couple of days before starting the policy.

Never seen it down to days, but how long you have owned the car makes a difference to the premium.

Remember a Xantia I changed for the exact same model, year etc et just lower mileage. and they wanted £100 more for the new car.  Queried and was told as above.  Out of curiosity ran a quote for new car owning it a year, and sure enough was same price as old Xantia.

Apparently it’s down to how organised they reckon you are.

People who need a policy to start straight away are, in their eyes, likely to be the sort of person who takes unnecessary risks whereas those who plan ahead are deemed to be a safer bet.

Just don’t tell them you’re the type of person who sets off across Manchester in the evening rush hour to collect an unseen K11 with a sticky caliper and a suspect fuel gauge that you’ve ‘won’ for pennies from someone you’ve never met on a strange website with ‘shit’ in the title whilst equipping yourself with nothing more than a pair of borrowed trade plates and 20 litres of water to throw over the aforementioned caliper on the hard shoulder of the M60 should the need arise.

You need to get an Au Pair to drive the 3rd car, then one dog per car - simples!
