Torsten2001 Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Were they really THIS rattly? I picked up this beauty tonight and after an illegal-ish drive home I'm sorta in love, now I remember them being rattly but Jesus!Isn't she lovely!
Split_Pin Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I remember a silver C-reg example with a black front splitter that used to tool around my home town which was VERY rattly indeed.
Torsten2001 Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 Cripes! It does seem to run well enough, can't wait to see it in daylight!
pogweasel Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 LOL. Looks canny enough in those pics Loving the £9.99 tr1mZ, I had those ones on my '93 Astra which was possibly one of the best cars I will ever own. As for tappets, anyone ever experienced an early Skoda Favorit? Man, they are of Talbot-rivalling rattle. Mother-in-law had one for years, you could hear it coming from about half a mile When we gave her our old Corsa 3-cyl, it was 'very quiet' in comparison, and that was a thrashy horrible lawn-mower sounding thing. They must have sorted them later as the injection version fatha_weasel had* wasn't quite so bad. * should be present tense really, but the old git hasn't touched it in years, muchos mildew
dollywobbler Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Actually, I think later ones are meant to be a bit quieter. I think the timing chain can get noisy, but they were never a quiet engine.Sorry, didn't want to just say "yes!"
Guest Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 First car I had on the road when I passed my test in 1989 was a horizon. Rattly-hell yes but never broke down/handled well for a 1st car too. It did lead to a succesion of solara's/alpines. Getting rare now so sorting it/keeping it would be good if you have room
BrianDamaged Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I've never driven a Horizon, but I have piloted a 1300 Alpine which that 1294cc Simca lump really struggled to pull along. And yes, it sounded like someone rolling a steel drum full of bolts down a concrete stairwell.Apparently the Horizon handled incredibly well for its time??
pogweasel Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Apparently the Horizon handled incredibly well for its time??I'd believe that, fairly similar set up to the 205/309 peugeots, which as we all know are delightfully supple. I tried to buy a Horizon, back in about 1996 as it was marginally less embarrassing than driving a Skoda Estelle, unfortunately the salesman laughed us off the forecourt. Bastard.
KruJoe Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Ace. So the seller DID get back to you for the £41! My kid brother is on his learning curve with his 205s. He has to navigate his way around paragraphs of "for Horizon models..." in his Haynes.
wuvvum Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 I had a Horizon 1100 a few years ago which wasn't too bad, but that yellow Simca 1300 van I had was dreadful. The 1500s aren't a lot better. Nice buy though, even if it does sound like a skeleton wanking in a biscuit tin you can't go wrong for £41.
garycox Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 BARGAIN. Wish I could get a tidy shite-mobile for less than scrap money!
Guest Kyle Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 I would be more worried if it didn't sound like a typing pool under the bonnet.Have you noticed the fuel gauge seldom moves?I was amazed with the last Horizon I had, took me to work all week on a tenner which was a huge departure from my normal daily at the time, a 1980 Audi 100 CD5E.
AnthonyG Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 it does sound like a skeleton wanking in a biscuit tin
Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 I've got a Talbot Alpine which DOESNT rattle, do I win £5?
VWPowered Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 i had a Horizon GLS was a 2 inch Gap all around the filler cap... its last days were with me
r.welfare Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 I've got a Talbot Alpine which DOESNT rattle, do I win £5?Have you ever started the engine? I drove a Horizon 1100 once, I think it was an LE "SERIES 2" (massive badge across the back), the engine was as wuvvum eloquently describes, plus the turning circle was absolutely atrocious. I hope you are good at 3-point turns, Torsten, you're going to need them even at mini-roundabouts.
Torsten2001 Posted March 5, 2009 Author Posted March 5, 2009 When I said rattly I was being restrained but I can't think of a word that sums it up better than Wuvvums eloquent phrase. Kyle, you're right about the fuel guage not moving, it remains on absolute zero, obviously doesn't work as the VERY nice man that sold it to me put about a tenners worth of fuel in! I am chuffed with it and reckon it'll be on the road (legally) before long!
