NorthernMonkey Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 Likely to cause issues with running due to the unmetered air?Not normally, no. More just bloody annoying. Kiltox 1
Kiltox Posted October 29, 2016 Author Posted October 29, 2016 Fuck. I guess the engine might be in trouble then.
SiC Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 Given your past success with engine changes, do you not fancy doing one on this? Does it say what the pressures were on the cylinders? I'd expect it to run like a bag of crap if it was substantially down on compression.
dollywobbler Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 Simply pour in some engine restorer. This man guarantees* it'll work. Stanky, Kiltox and The Moog 3

Pulls too well to be properly fucked though No overheating or anything like that either
Sheefag Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 Electronic throttle module was an issue/recall on the V70T5. When mine went out to lunch, the cruise quit working, eml came on and idle went to shit - still pulled like a train though. SiC 1
SiC Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 Probably the same scenario as my Saab. As the guy I bought it off said, the dealer's are fine when only one or two things are wrong, however when your giving cars near the end of their life with all-sorts of problems, they don't know what to do! For example, the year before last MOT, it failed on emissions. The Saab dealer produced a whole list of things to repair to fix to get it to pass - catalytic converter, coil pack, intercooler and turbo. He told them to do the bare basics and try again. New coil pack and plugs it passed with flying colours! Probably just a bit low on one cylinder compared to the others, but then it has done over 200k... Shep Shepherd 1
SiC Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 How is the gearbox shifting? Is it a 4 speeder or a 5 speed?

Kiltox Posted October 29, 2016 Author Posted October 29, 2016 Gearbox is perfect. 5 speed. It has full service history to 199k ETM has been replaced twice since 2010....
Sheefag Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 2 x ETMs? Most odd, next stop http://www.volvoforums.org.uk I think.
Kiltox Posted October 29, 2016 Author Posted October 29, 2016 I think it has anyway - once at Volvo and once at an independent although the prices were a bit low so maybe only part of the assembly (I thought it was a single sealed unit though)
SiC Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 Considering its a late 90s car, I think these still look very modern and swish. Even the dashboard looks smart and fresh still. Kiltox 1
NorthernMonkey Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 Check the intercooler too...more of an issue on the D5s but not unheard of.
Richard Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 I've got the diagnostic gear for these, you're probably too far away (from Fife) though.
Kiltox Posted October 30, 2016 Author Posted October 30, 2016 I'm hoping that my Delphi DS150 will talk to it Ordered some PAS fluid to collect later so I think I'll move it to my unit and start poking around it today
rantingYoof Posted October 30, 2016 Posted October 30, 2016 Nice. I've been worried about the ETM thing on mine as it's over 100k now and there is no history of that being done before I bought it. Hopefully as mine is the 'base' engine it's not affected as much. The build quality of these is astonishing. The dash feels like it's moulded from a single piece of granite. I hope you get it up and running. I'm way too wimpy to buy a T5 with an auto attached but I've always wondered what a 250hp kick in the back feels like. Mine doesn't kick - it's more like a big hand arrives at around 1800rpm and simply pushes you forwards with more urgency. The T5 must literally be like God taking a penalty. Supernaut Posted October 30, 2016 Posted October 30, 2016 Stick an XUD in there, mate. It'll go like fuck. Kiltox 1
Kiltox Posted October 30, 2016 Author Posted October 30, 2016 Airbag code cleared fine Number of different engine codes stored, none of them particularly related so I've cleared them all and will take it for a run to see what comes back!
Kiltox Posted October 30, 2016 Author Posted October 30, 2016 Engine codes after a run - lumpy idle back as soon as it warmed up but worse to the point it would occasionally stall at idle After clearing the codes it runs better but with quite a high idle speed - brake pedal flat to the floor causes it to lower and stabilise so I think it's a vacuum issue
Kiltox Posted October 30, 2016 Author Posted October 30, 2016 Next job is definitely to inspect the brake servo to see if it's just the rubber boot that is leaking - I don't fancy replacing the whole thing because it looks like an absolute bastard on RHD cars with the engine needing dropping to get the fucker out!
SiC Posted October 30, 2016 Posted October 30, 2016 This is what puts me off this age Volvos. Any usually straight forward jobs, turn into major project. Valve body replacement? Subframe drop. (Saab just requires some hoses and brackets removing)Top Tank rubber filler pipe perished? Tank drop. Etc.
Kiltox Posted November 1, 2016 Author Posted November 1, 2016 Colt has gone to another shiter Not started delving into the Volvo yet but I need it road legal by 15th Dec so I'd better get cracking!
