Focus tdci fuel filter

I know the car can be a pig to start after changing the fuel filter - a common ford trait - so much so the starter can burn out.

I have a pela pump and a hand held brake bleeder - could either of these be used to pull the fuel through?

Chuck a bit of easy start or wd40 or similar in the air filter, that should kick it into life! ☺

Probably but I don't know if I would want to mix either with diesel. Can or did you fill the filter with diesel before you put it on? Does it have a lift pump in the tank or just rely on the injector pump like some Vauxhalls?

It is possible and I would certainly do this - however you can still have issues getting the car to start.

Yeh just pull it through with the pela . That's what I do on cars without an in tank pump

We used to use a Draper oil sucker to bring the derv through.  A bloody pig of a job to get right.  Brake Cleaner through the air filter won't work on these bastards, nor towing around the block unless you've let only a tiny bit air in the system.  Doing so will destroy the DMF.

Good luck, my local garage had an absolute mare starting one of these after a filter change.

Is it a bulkhead filter on these?

If so, fill it, fire it up and keep your foot on the throttle, hold it at 3-4K for 30 secs or so and in my experience, that sorts the job out, til the car is pulling fuel from the tank, again.

That works on JTDs and the like, but not on these bastards.

Works on mk3 Mondeo's as well.

What utter twat thought it would be a good idea to not fit a primer hand pump to a Diesel engine, i'm in the pre fill the new filter as much as you can camp.

Stuck the pipe in your mouth and suck it through yourself. Works for me.

This is an absolute pig of a job and isn't something I'd recommend doing at home. Best left to a professional as it invariable leads to the battery going completely flat trying to start the car again. An oil sucker is useful to pull the derv through.

My independent Ford specialist and main dealer absolutely hate changing these, as it can be a lengthily time consuming job.

What about attaching a generic red box cheap eBay hand vacuum pump to the filter output and pumping like crazy?

Or attach a diaphragm pump to the outlet and the other end into a bucket to catch it when it does suck through?

All my previous diesels have had hand priming pumps. I clamp the outlet pipe before disconnecting and then get the new fuel filter full and just about to overflow with the pump. Then reconnect the outlet. Usually starts within 10seconds of cranking.

Yes, my car has the filter on the bulkhead.

It also has a garage bill for a starter. I wonder why?
