meeting us at Phoenix?

Posted

Maybe. I'll see. Dont wait past 0830 for me though

It's a bit snowy here, so we might be a bit late. If I'm not going to make Phoenix for 8:30 I'll just head straight for Dalry, so don't wait for us.

It's snowing here too. I've got to take my corolla to the place I got my alternator refurbished at 9 so might not be able to make it to Dalry for a reasonable time.

Remember if you want to buy any shote you need to register at the front desk and it could be busy. I should be there around 10.30-10.45 don't buy all the good stuff!

Posted

Constant backshift means I couldn't be arsed getting up for this.

It was really busy and bloody freezing but good to meet everyone. No cars bought (full size ones anyway) but a few close call.. That's black gaffa tape holding the plate on to that 800 coupe by the way.

Initial start to the day was dark and cold-always a winner!

We arrived and paid the entrance fee, dodging past the Tractor to see what prices were like in the commercial auction..

The Dalry Motorshow 2016 was on- you can see the shiters next to the ultra-modern* Ford.

Our expectations were low and prices high when this L200 warrior (on a 1997 R ) with 2 days MOT saw £500+ fees.

Just to set the scene these Saturday auctions are crazy busy. Not only do they sell cars they also sell, commercials and a lot of heavy duty machinery like dumper truck, road rollers and like. On top of that there's the a police and commercial kitchen equipment auction, which means all the Del boys, Arfur Daily's and legitimete businessmen* come out to try to hoover up what ever shite's on offer.

I somehow didn't pay the 5 quid entrance fee. I got away with this by simply not knowing there was one.

Car wise the auction was full of the usual dealer cast offs and suspicious private entries. Dome was the only one who actually registered to bid due to warnings from various better halves (including mine) that returning with a new car and I'm paraphrasing would end up "getting your baw's toe'd"

We picked out 3 cars for special interest. I only took pictures of one but maybe some of the other guys have pictures.

First off an S-type Jag in a striking JRG. It was an 03 later facelift one with the 2.5v6 all in all really tidy. MOT until March though.

The interior was spotless and it sounded good.

it went through for 800 quid but didn't hit it's reserve. Later one we found out they wanted 1200 for it. Too much maybe. If you wanted one of these and intended to keep it it might have been a decent buy but if any of us bought it (dome) it'd probably be punted on after a couple of months.

Next was a drift king fando-wankola Mazda rx-8 23i. Lots of WCPGW was banded around. This was unfortunately an 06 plate and 4 days over the top level c02 banding and therefore £505 a year to tax. It fired up with a bit of smoke but sounded good and re-started no problem 10-15 later. When we went out to hear it being restarted there was a 10 plate Zafira knocking it's tits off with 1 flat tyre. No-one seemed bother about this but I'm pretty sure the knocking was louder when we passed it the 2nd time. What ever happened it never made the block.

Anyway with it's short mot and stupid car tax rate I thought this was going to be cheap, cheap. Wrong!

It didn't hit it's reserve, I believe they wanted 1100 quid for it, which is way, way too much for an auction rx-8 that had 1 months mot and was 500 quid a year to tax. At half that it would maybe be worth a gamble.

It looked like this only slightly worse

Last by by no means least was a 4.0 p38 Range Rover, which had the honour of not only being Cat D but also clocked. On the plus side it was a nice colour (light metallic blue) and had a multipoint lpg system fitted. It was mot'd until may and sounded good when they started it up although the engine looked like had been stored in a rock pool as it looked like it had lichen and barnacles all over it. Amazingly all the warning lights went out once it was on the move.

Bidding arms were limbered up. The thoughts being it wouldn't do much more than 500 quid especially once it hit the block and found out the cat-d marker had actually invalidated the MOT.  Fine selling price? £1550. You're welcome to it.

The best thing I think was the Nissan Qashqai in the carpark covered in Wolf decals. I hope someone got a picture.

My phone had decided to switch to low res so my pictures are a bit SiPix.

My favourite thing in the police auction was the burglary kit that was being sold complete.

I forgot about that small business pack. That Qashqai is brilliant .

I take it that's Adrian's car with the boot full of Tonka type stuff.

Yes... Those Police tat auctions are quite dangerous. There were a couple of interesting bikes but nothing that wasn't a project of some sort and one which had clearly been crashed into something.

Posted

It sounds like that auction is a good place to sell cars instead of buying them.

Posted

A lot of the bikes looked like they'd been dragged out an canal then jet washed. The prices aren't normally so high, possibly inflated as it was so busy.

Posted

Nearly all the bikes were sub-£100 supermarket/catalogue efforts that had been neglected and abused. I've a feeling they had been piled in a skip because there seemed to be a lot of twisted frames. The few half decent ones had some good bits but there wasn't anything that you could use without spending money.

This was my favourite thing from the machinery section.

Aye, was a good day out.

I registered to bid purely on the basis that if I didn't then something I was interested in would go for the money I'd be prepared to pay. As it happened most things went for too much.

Did get itchy fingers a few times but it would only be to smoke around in and flog on and something semi broken off gumtree for cheaps is a better bet.  The E46 Sport compact for £450 was the only genuinely possible money maker out of the interesting stuff.

That Jag though was lovely. It'll be up against a white background for big money shortly.
