Classic insurance

So is it generally a 20 year old rule then? I would love another veg friendly Merc but can't in normal circumstances  justify the cost of insurance however if I can get one on a classic policy that would be great.

I was going to go the classic insurance route fur the Mazda, but it turned out to be much cheaper to do a multi car deal with my daily... But think that was partly cuz it wasn't garaged at the time... But a couple of classic companies said they wouldn't insure it because either it was too new our cuz of a couple of light modifications (which came with the car I must point out!)

I was going to ask about mods - not the daft stuff, just fairly subtle things like 1" drops, non-standard wheels, leccy ignition etc. Do most 'classic' insurers take them on board, or are you limited to 'modified' policies? IME insurers seem unhappy to insure as modified unless you have a couple of grand sunk into alloys/ICE/paintjobs etc.

I have just renewed my policy and this time went for Adrian Flux, the guy I spoke to was generally interested, it turned out he had a friend or relative with some Talbot Alpine's so that probably helped. Their quote was by far the cheapest.

The quotes from Footman and Peter James for the Pug were excessive (I was shocked as to how high it was).

I have been with Peter James for the last three years but when I talked to them about renewing they were not particularly helpful and didn't seem interested, it is a shame as they are very local to work and I was keen to keep the business with a local company (not that it matters particularly). When I have had cause to ring Peter James in the recent past I have found them to be quite surly.

It was good to see that Footman James were answering the telephone a lot quicker than when I was insured with them.

I nearly went with Lancaster as they were a tad cheaper than Adrian Flux on the Horizon but again their quote on the 309 was quite a lot more expensive.

So it is early days but I am quite impressed with the service from Adrian Flux.

I've had the Mercury insured with Adrian Flux since it came over 2 years ago.

The first years quote was good and included breakdown cover. Good because a few days after taking the policy out I had to use the breakdown service, they were very good about everything, helpfull and quick.

The second year the price was all good again so I just carried on with them.

I've heard a lot of bad stuff about AF but every time I've spoke to them or needed something from them they've been good.

Posted

I was apprehensive of having a policy with AF but softer the shitstorm I had with Lancaster screwing up when I needed to claim, then they tried to bum rape me come renewal saying that I couldn't have the mileage I required and my excess would be stupid for an extortionate premium, i decided to give AF a ring because of their online price, they gave me everything I wanted, from the same insurer as Lancaster quoted with with a £50 excess, i noticed that my stainless exhaust wasn't declared, i thought I had but rang them to add it, no increase in premium or any administration costs so I couldn't be happier with them at the moment, the only bad thing I have to say is they never sorted my agreed valuation

I think this varies between insurers, so my MX has non standard wheels and a noisy exhaust... But nothing major. Some were fine with it, others less so... Sorry i can't remember which ones!

Sorry to resurrect thread, but probably better than starting a new one.

Its time to re-insure the Merc 320 coupe, its 96 regd so only just coming into classic policy.

Just done the online quotes.

One lot came in at £120 but after waffling for 20 bloody minutes its no commuting, they can FRO, i enjoy taking the old girl to work on sunny warm days.

Classic policy Flux came in at £155.

Normal Comprehensive, 2 years NCD (second policy in my name), came in @ £181, with Esure, but Cornmarket who i'm with now and trust will most likely match that and chuck a sweetener in to boot.

Haven't contacted Footman James though its possible Confused Classic search covers them.

Anyway at a difference of £26 to stay on a normal policy earning NCD, is there any advantage to a classic policy for me at all apart from that £25 saving?

Seems weird you can get classic policy on a Merc but not a 25 year old Citroen.

I've had plenty of 20-year old Citroens on classic cover...

Classic cover tends to have other benefits - breakdown cover, agreed value being the main two. On the downside, you don't get to earn NCD. Depends whether you think you need the benefits or not. Also, it's sadly the case that the best quotes tend to be the result of a lengthy phone conversation. Means repeating the same sodding info time and time again, but the reward can be cheapness.

I was with Peter James for ages, and very happy with them (in the event of a claim, not just because of cheapness). Now, I'm with Peter S Taylor, though only the 2CV is on that policy as a classic. Mind you, all are covered by breakdown cover, so that'll do. They are the only people who would cover me for business use, which I very definitely need.

I've just payed my renewal with Sureterm Direct classic insurance. £118.00 for the Granada 2.8, includes the usual classic policy upgrades as part of the policy.

I've been using them about 3 years on this car now, no problems and always easy to deal with. The price is always good too.

I've been with Sureterm for many years, for my main car on a normal policy as well as the Reliant on a classic policy.  They merged or were bought by Lancaster a few years ago.  Have not had to claim, but when renewing on the phone they seem a cheerful and helpful lot.  I've had classics insured with Footman James and Adrian Flux in the past and they were fine until premiums suddenly increased to £80 or so more than the competition.

Tried ClassicLine, typed in all the details only to be told no online quote due to car, sod.

Tried Peter James, typed in all the details but they won't quote online for later than 1987, bugger.

As above, it would appear some lengthy phone calls are in order and i'm fed up with the faff already, though i don't suppose LPG and the wrong wheels arse helping.

Footman James will quote online, they have always worked out well for me.

Seem to cover pretty much anything 20 years +.

Did I read that correctly you managed to get a classic policy with business use? I've tried to get an agreed value on the van every time it's come up for renewal and everybody I've called has said no business use.

Bren am I getting mixed up or are you from Widnes area? If so is your SD1 silver?

Posted

I used to have business use on  classic insurance for my XJ40.

Another thing, send the classic insurance proof of your NCD and ask to lodge it. Everytime I've done it they've been happy to. What it means is when you stop having classic insurance they'll do you a letter saying you joined them with x years NCD & haven't crashed since. Got that accepted as NCD back on a normal policy each time too.

I have just had my second year quote from Footman James and it has comedown 12% which I am

happy with as mine is a modified car which was a bit of a pain to get quotes for while it was under

20 years old. No idea what they are like for claims handling and don't want to find out (!).

Nice tip Hooli wish I had done that myself

My old mini was insured on a classic policy with two pages of mods, all £0 cost. It was stuff like hilos, different wheels, different exhaust, steering wheel, dash mods, different seat material, brakes etc etc. Always best to declare and most stuff is free in my experience unless it really boosts power.

ClassicLine called The Wife today, gave a quote of £229 for 1500 miles, no ta.

No time yet to try Footman or Sureterm, i have a feeling it'll be staying on normal insurance with Cornmarket for the £181 Esure quote for another year.

I'm with footman James. Seem fine and have Euro breakdown and general holiday cover. 2cv is unlimited mileage for £125 I think and £4500 value, fiat is £180 for 3000 miles and £8000 value.

FJ are a broker so claims are handled by the underwriter, for me it was Ageas.

When my last Subaru got stolen they were pretty good, took an age to relate all the details over the phone but they sent an "assessor" out, it sounded like they might have thought I was a scammer as they had a record of me getting lots of quotes for different cars.

Anyway the assessor quickly determined that I wasn't trying to defraud the insurance company for the value of my old crock, and a week or so later I got paid out a fair market value.

That is correct. Peter S Taylor/Bishop Calway (seem to be the same company) weren't the only place that offered me cover, but they were the only ones who weren't absolutely taking the piss. Naturally, it's a fair chunk more expensive than I was paying, but travelling with work has become a regular thing rather than an occasional one-off.

Does 245 for the crying pumpkin sound fair? I am 54 in a fairly cheap postcode, but it has quite a bit of non-standard (more like non-original) stuff (engine, wheels, suspension). Only managed to try my existing broker (no quote) and Footman James - it's like a full time job in itself.

2001 GTV is with Footman James (so they will do newer cars on a classic policy, they just won't do anything) 4000 miles PA, £220, with occasional commuting £4000'agreed value.....

My 2001 P38 Rangie is with FJ. 6000 miles a year no N/C and it was £325. That was the cheapest I could get including all the main stream insurers as well.
