If someone were to buy the Mondeo then.........

I've always thought this type of vehicle would make a good alternative to owning a van as insurance companies can be so pissy about vans in private (not business) use. Here you have the best of both worlds, a useful sized van (I've carried large-ish motorcycles in a Galaxy) that drives nicely with added people ferrying ability too.

The only downside is like most of the MPV breed (as with vans to be fair), it's a real bastard to work on the engine as there's no bloody room/access.

Getting to the front of the engine is fine, but the back is (as you say) totally inaccessible.  Fortunately the only thing on the back of an 8V HDI engine is the turbo.

Filters, injectors, glow plugs, pump and alternator are all on the front and are no problem.

If you had to get the head off I think you would have to remove the engine.

I have seen a main dealer do this and what they do is remove the bumper, slam panel and radiators and pull it out the front.

Removing the front panels would be the most sensible option and although probably a bit of a pain to do it would save time in the long run rather than struggling with limited access. (Bit like the dismantling of the whole front end I saw done on an Audi A8 - i think - just to do the cambelt!).

240,000 miles and still going strong! Yet more evidence that the 8 valve 2.0 HDi engine is up there with the best. And I now know some Grand Vitaras have it.

The 8 valve is much tougher than the 16 valve.

The timing belts rarely fail and when they do they normally just bust a couple of rocker arms.

Also the injectors are short and so they don't seize into the head like the 16 valve.

I have had a few Xuds over the years and none of them went to this kind of mileage without needing a head gasket.

For me the 8 valve HDI is one of the all time great engines.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that these do like to split their intercooler. This one has a custom made large capacity one which is much more robust.

Does that first picture show some red and amber lights over the back window?   What do they do?

In a previous job I spent some considerable time with a Scudo van, which is basically the same thing, is it not?  I loved that little beastie.  If this one goes to Roffle, I'm definitely in, as above.

I think I'd have 4 tickets.

I kind of want to buy it just so I could Hoover and de-contaminchild it.

Very posh - probably explains why the tailgate has survived so well.    Pity it didn't have some on the sides!

If you throw in a clay bar and a bottle of snow foam, I think WilsonWilson may be unable to resist.

I thought you said it had a towbar?

It has a brink removable towbar. However the release arm has snapped so you need a screwdriver to remove it.

In that there London a towbar is a parking aid don't y'know.

Tough as old boots these things. Ironic that their replacement was about as hard-wearing as a cheese flip flop. I've just got in a V reg 2.0 pez auto in wine red and am massively impressed by the ride and interior in them.

If I can flog the Mondy I'd be very interested but will only know tomorrow morning.

Do like this. Back in the day I used to drive one that had a 33ft extensible mast sticking through the roof :-D

Why???

BBC local radio used them for outside broadcasts. The one I used to drive is still around, although they changed the livery a couple of years ago and now it's white.
