Swoopy Saab Story: they think it's all over!

That looks well, doesn't it?

Mine... well as I posted elsewhere, no sooner had I filled the tank (again) than it developed a misfire.  I took it in to Martin's garage.  He tried a set of new plugs, but that didn't cure it, so I've had to go looking for a coil pack.  I found one on ebay and it arrived today, so I'll drop it off tomorrow when I finish work.  With a bit of luck I'll have the car home for Easter!  I did ask him to sling it through an MoT for me, as I thought 320 wanted it, but of course he's now gone out and bought one closer to home.  Which also looks good.  I'm beginning to think that for a modern, these are actually quite handsome.

I must be ill!

Remember -do not turn the di cassette upside down! If you do, leave it upright for an hour before starting...

Some tips how to reduce the risk of a broken DI cassette
  • Never, absolutely never, run the DI cassette upside down for testing. The transformer oil inside the coils will flow away from the coils and they will overheat. This will damage the cassette.
  • Never, absolutely never, run the DI cassette without sparkplugs. This will damage the cassette.
  • Don't place the DI cassette upside down when removing it to get access to the sparkplugs. If you did put it upside down you have to drink a cup of tea after mounting it, but before starting the engine. This will allow time for the transformer oil to flow back to where it is supposed to be.
  • Use the specified NGK sparkplug. The R in BCPR and PFR is important, it indicates that the sparkplug has a resistor in it. Using non-R sparkplugs with a DI cassette will damage the cassette.
  • Use the specified NGK sparkplug. Never use weird sparkplug designs with two, three, or fourtytwo spark gaps as they may damage the cassette or produce weird ionization measurements that will cause trouble for the Trionic engine management.

Those look like good tips, kind sir; and many thanks for them.  I didn't do the actual work however.

The pattern coil pack has arrived and is now on, and oh boy does the thing run better!  This afternoon I bought two part-worns for the back wheels.  They are different makes, which spoils the matching-Bridgestones it had, but never mind, Michelin and Fulda are still good tyres.  Tomorrow morning it's going back to Martin for a back silencer.  I could see it clearly when the NSR wheel was off, and it's abundantly clear where the blow is!  That thing is more hole than silencer.

Houston, we have a problem.

Martin's been trying for a week to get a back-box for this beastie.  Yesterday he found one, at a supplier in Kendal, but was sharp enough to ask the price before confirming the order.  £150.

Have you recovered yet?  I haven't!  Obviously now I need a secondhand one, so if you know of one lying about without a car round it, please shout up!  Even better will be if we can arrange a Shite relay to get it to me.

It does.  It's on, it's been on for a few weeks now, but the car's done very little.  Apart from a 400 mile round trip to pick up the Cadillac, it's spent most of the time at Martin's while he tried to find someone with a code reader that would recognise Saab.  Today we did, and it wasn't good news.  Engine knock sensor, and ABS sensor.  Or possibly other things more expensive.  Anyway it isn't going to pass an MoT with the brake warnings on (it's now expired) and I'm thinking I'd rather replace than repair.  So, anybody fancy making me a cash offer, or a swopper offer?  I'm listening...

Barrow-in-Furness... bottom-left corner of the Lake District.  Book test, jump on train, drive home.  It'll make it, it's just done Derby and back with no problems. ;)

I'd rather not swap a blue Citroen AX if that's ok. Sorry :(

That's fine Ken, I might not have accepted anyway, but we will never know now, will we? ;)

Do these have a ABS warning light, or does the error come up on the SID? If on the SID, then it should pass an MOT.

It would be a bit far for me down in Bristol to get this transported on the back of a trailer if MOT failed/expired. :(

Would Neo Bros not provide used but good parts at a cheaper cost. Shame to let it go. Saabs are lovely, used to have a '69 99, a '84 900 and then a 9000.

If it was a blue AX I might be interested but as it's not I'm out.

Possibly, Ken, but I've been here before, remember?  Sensor after sensor on the Mercury, plus workshop time, and still not fixed... until Bobthebeard took it on and fixed it, using his own time and crucially, his own driveway.

SiC, yes it's a dedicated warning light on the dash.

I should point out that the car drives fine!  In fact it's positively nice to drive.  It's powerful, comfy and not too thirsty.  These lights have been on for months and there has been no deterioration in how the car behaves.  As I said above, I confidently took it on a big round-trip only a few weeks ago, with exactly the same display all over the dash.  Roger who drove it back behind the Caddy said it felt absolutely fine.  So it could very well be a simple* matter of replacing two sensors.

But, it might not, and I'd rather take a cash or swop offer from someone with more time/skills/facilities who can throw those at it, as opposed to keeping it and throwing money at Martin.

Just back from not far from you Eddy, at Ravenglass- in fact had an afternoon in Barrow- wish I'd thought to give you a shout! My 9-5 pulled the caravan down to the lakes and back no problem. If I didn't have one I'd buy yours!

t'were luvley, nice part of the world! Shaun Connery in my sat nav took me and the caravan down some roads that seemed to be unused since the Roman times though....

You went home too soon, I'm at a car show tomorrow in Grasmere.... and yes, I think you're right about some of those roads!  WTF does Connery know anyway?  You need Sally Traffic!

I wouldn't mind a 9-5 but would prefer a diesel one. Is that wrong?

Posted

Why? Because the engines are boring or unreliable or both?

It was no big deal really... Suspecting sensor after sensor problems etc. It turned out to be a simple fix.. As these things often are. The sensor was fine. The thing that drove the sensor was borked. Replaced the drive to the sensor and all ok.

Cost $19 plus shipping....

Yes, I remember you telling me.  The sensor was brand new, lol, I remember taking it to Martin (twice) for fitting.  Twice as he fitted both of the suspects, that I bought.  That car should never have another sensor issue!

I will get to one of these shows soon! I'm in London this weekend, rarely seem to be about for an entire weekend!

Oh and I'd buy your petrol Swedish estate but I'm already trying to shift one so ahm oot.
