door mirror & the MoT

I'm looking at getting the X1/9 through an MoT later this month and it currently doesn't have a door mirror on the L/H door. The car is a 1983 model, RHD and it has an internal rear view mirror and a RH door-mounted external mirror.

 

I've had a read here:-

Now, if I'm being thick excuse me, but the use of the word "or" in the following quote

 

 

  Obligatory mirrors are
a. an exterior mirror fitted to the offside (right-hand side when seated in the
drivers seat), or

b, an exterior mirror fitted to the
nearside fleft hand side when seated In the drivers seat), or

c. an interior mirror

 

 

would indicate that the car is fine without an external mirror on the L/H door?

As far as I was told two rear facing mirrors is all that required, the above does read like you only need an interior mirror though.

I've not had a problem come mot time.

You need two rear facing mirrors - one of these MUST be on the Offside (driver's) door. The other one can be either on the nearside door or in the centre of the screen. (8.1.1)

 

Cars registered before 1/8/78 can have only one mirror in any position, which is why the description says "or" all the time.

Do post 86 cars not need a nearside mirror too? I find it unlikely that Ford would fit them as standard if they didn't have to.

No, for a class 4 or 7 MoT you don't need a nearside mirror if you have a centre one. The only date related change is the 1978 one. Class 5 (minibus) need a nearside mirror after 1/8/83.

 

 

There might be a C&U requirement for the mirrors, I'm not sure though.

You must have 2 rear facing mirrors, one of which must be an off-side (driver's side) door or wing mounted mirror. The other must be an interior mirror (as in a car) or a near-side door or wing mounted one (as with a small van)

Correct. You've passed the read and comprehension test!

 

It's dead easy to drive without, you do a thing called "turning your head" to the left...

I have indeed Taff, not recently, but I've done megamiles on two wheels in the past.

 

The GS just has a driver's side door mirror as I can't be arsed sticking a matching hole in the passenger side door. I was also quite content to drive one of my Reliant Rebels sans exterior mirrors too - seemed a shame to go sticking holes in undrilled wings.

A passenger mirror was still an option on Reliant in the mid 90s so I think your fine

No. 2cvs didn't have them as standard.

Just for the sake of it... what about LHD cars? The mirror can't be on the driver's door and the offside door at the same time unless it is in a space/time continuum.

Offside door, regardless of where the driver's seat is. If you think about it, it makes sense because where is the overtaking traffic going to come from?

Both would be assesed on their merits regarding security and view to rear, then the top one would probably pass with an advisory. I can't see the shades actually working as a mirror.

Interesting factoid, the military don't teach offside & nearside, they teach left hand side and right hand side from the drivers seat.

True. Factory manuals also describe component locations as left/right from the driver's seat meaning that everything ends up reversed when you are looking under the bonnet.

 

VOSA on the otherhand love their nearside/offside terminology.

how come?

 

the reasoning being, if we take a vehicle from UK to mainland Europe, the left hand side will still be the left hand side whereas the offside and nearside will have switched over.
