Scrappage scheme question

There are hundreds of steam locomotives and traction engines being kept in tip top condition by enthusiasts all over the country. I think they would be a better bet than trying to dig machinery out of a tunnel and distribute it around a devastated country.

I have seen machinery that has been left underground, it doesn't survive very well.

The remains of some vehicles subjected to the scrappage scheme seem to still exist.

I saw that video a while ago. All the everyday stuff has gone and what's left there all seems to be rarer and more valuable stuff so I reckon it's been put aside for spares recovery. There's Golf GTIs, several P6s and even two Daimler Conquests in there  For the love of God why? I hope the modern shitboxes they were scrappaged for gave nothing but grief.

This has been doing the rounds for quite a while, i suspect it's a good few years old. As QS says, some of the rarer stuff may get parted out but I thought the whole agreement with the (stupid) scheme was that everything was crushed? Maybe they found a way round it, I don't know. It would be nice to know that even if they were off the road for ever, at least some of their parts can be re-used to keep others active longer (hey, recycling, now there's a novel idea............).

The fact those 924s are all missing their interiors suggests the cars ARE being stripped to some degree

Which raises the question: Why would anyone want loads of 924 interiors? Of all the parts that may have value on a scrap 924, I wouldn't have thought the interior was at the top of the list.

Reuse refurbish refurbish restore recycle reclaim.

It should be illegal to scrap a car without taking off every sub assembly and offering it up on the open market.

When I worked at Garrett (Honeywell engine boosting) they had a manufacturing plant in South Manchester with a yard full of old turbos carefully segregated and catalogued against part number and application. And would rebuild them with new parts on identical equipment to the Skem plant.

I'd like to see a day where one day a year car manufacturers use only remanufactured parts to build products.

There's also some electric trains for when the steam runs out, diesel trains for when the electricity runs out, and 60 millions pairs of rollerskates which means we're all screwed.

The end of the world came not with a bang, but a funk infused roller disco.
