scaryoldcortina Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Oh ARSE. This morning the coolant level light was on. Topped it up, went to work, checked underneath. There is a hole in the rad, and the whole bottom edge of it looks none too clever. I also don't have a spare one because the rad off my other car already did this..... New rad lists at £338+vat but nowhere has them in stock. I'm taking the holed but spare one to a recoring specialist next week to find out how much. Worst thing of all is that I can't use it for the wedding now, and have been forced to borrow an Omega instead.
scaryoldcortina Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 ewwwwww. You would think that one mid 90's V6 barge would be much like another, wouldn't you? Well, they aren't. Compared to the Scorpio, which is roomy inside, luxurious, quick and handles like a smaller car the Omega is cramped, uncomfortable, stiff steering and slow. It's like driving a sixties car where the scorp feels modern. Ah well, at least it doesn't leak water. doobietoo, outlaw118, Bear and 1 other 4
Jim Bell Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Its almost as if all vauxhalls are not as good as other cars. Or something. HH-R, Lacquer Peel, vulgalour and 2 others 5
scaryoldcortina Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Yes, something like that. I have driven it before, and didn't notice it being shit then so maybe the problem is that fords are really good when they aren't broken. Jim Bell 1
scaryoldcortina Posted November 2, 2015 Author Posted November 2, 2015 To be fair to the omega, I got used to it quickly and it's actually a nice car to drive. Putting air in the tyres when I filled it up helped a lot, and it did the weekend like a champ. Now then, radiators.... New Rad - unobtainableGood second hand rad - no chance!Exchange rad - £338+vatRecored rad - £250+vatFinding a Granada Cosworth radiator in the shed with a good core - priceless! One of the sides is different, but I can swap it over. Hopefully tomorrow sometime I'll have a good radiator for no cost. KruJoe 1

purplebargeken Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 I liked them when they first came out and still like them now. They were oddly styled but quite appealing. Super soft and squidgy seats are a Ford speciality. Shame they (Ford) don't make cars of such ilk nowadays. Oddly, this is one model of car I have never driven. Hmm.
scaryoldcortina Posted November 2, 2015 Author Posted November 2, 2015 Thus proving the adage that you should never throw anything away... Yeah, I think I broke the car the rad came from about a decade ago. I don't even know why I kept it!

scaryoldcortina Posted November 9, 2015 Author Posted November 9, 2015 OK, another oh gawd WTF update... Radiator hassles - I now have one that doesn't leak by repairing* the least broken one with some chemical metal. Normally this would do as a semi permanent fix to get the car back on the road but there is still the issue of why exactly the engine makes radiators balloon and explode. This turned out to be a known issue, and according to fordscorpio.co.uk it is a problem with the thermostat - a sticky one can cause a plug of steam to shoot down the bottom hose into the rad and knacker it. Solution - change the stat as well as the radiator. I bought one, it was a fiver. It was also the wrong one. It would fit any other cologne V6 engine, but not this one because COSWORTH. The stat is instead located in a little brass can behind the AC compressor. This normal service item is still available from Ford, there is no aftermarket equivalent. See if you can guess how much.
JohnK Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I'm not going to guess, but I would hazard some of us shiters have paid less for a running, roadworthy car?
scaryoldcortina Posted November 9, 2015 Author Posted November 9, 2015 All guesses in the right area. Ford want £168+vat, and there is one on ebay at the moment for £178.62 which the seller says is a 10% saving. Nice. There is a regular ordinary stat buried inside the crimped together brass tube - I bet I can match that to something after I've cut the damn thing open and I also bet I can solder it back together afterwards. Losing the bet means having to drive a Laguna. loserone, Sigmund Fraud, Inspector Morose and 3 others 6

beko1987 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 that's scary for a thermostat. I've always had a secret horn for a scorpio, that flame is dying a bit now... At least you can have a nice sofa out of it if it all goes too wrong
scaryoldcortina Posted November 9, 2015 Author Posted November 9, 2015 Get a non-cosworth one, and all the bits are cheap and available over the counter pretty much anywhere.
JohnK Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 £175.Got a Euphonium in the cupboard for a lot less than that!

scaryoldcortina Posted November 9, 2015 Author Posted November 9, 2015 Ha! Thanks. Another reason there aren't any left.
phil_lihp Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I'm very surprised by the parts costs, I naively assumed they'd be like a big Mondeo with cheap, plentiful parts available from all corners of the country/internet. Is that because it's a Cosworth 2.9 so doesn't share many oily bits with other Fords? I was going to put a VM diesel Scorpio estate on my list of potential cheap, reliable work hacks for next year but perhaps not.
Richard Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Can a man of your calibre not open up that brass housing, put a new thermostat in and solder it back together? Danblez 1
