Service kits

I've been pricing up a few items for my new Peugeot. I've found a service kit on eBay for £23.99 which includes the oil! How can they do it so cheap? I usually buy the items separately from carparts4less or ecp with a discount code and it works out quite a bit more. Has anyone else used these kits?

I don't think it includes the oil if you read carefully.

It'll just be some guy with a living room full of oil and filters that doesn't have to pay rent on a unit, wages of five blokes that are always outside smoking anyway, or any advertising. He can do it that cheap because that's what it really costs before ECP take their chunk.

I suppose you run the risk of it being not-quite-right because I bet he doesn't have the support of all the major suppliers but then, we're comparing it to Euro so..... yeah. Not quite right is par for the course.

Edit: Or yeah, he's just wording it quite carefully ;)

When I had 306 HDi I could get the filters from the main dealer for less than anywhere else.

Brake pads for the focus £10 on shite bay.

£22 from factors.

I have purchased sensors cheaply off E-Bay before and wasted my money. As for service kits, I still use the local Motor Factors because if any bits are wrong it's a lot easier to get them swapped.

What assurance do you have that the pads are genuine?

Because I have spoken to them.

The pads said "we are genuine."

And that's enough for me.

Genuine? Well, they won't be OEM boxed for that price.

They'll be brake pads, you tell by looking at them. I'm not even sure if there is a market for "fake" pads but since there's so many names nobody's ever heard of, the fakes might be better than a brand!

If you're quick Lidl have their 10w40 semi syn in at the moment, about £11 for 5 litres IIRC...

I always buy service kit & oil on ebay from these sellers, in fact this is what I've just got

I know the C4 can have problems if OEM oil filter isn't used and prefer to use the recommended oil as well.

Watch the filters are not filled with chinese newspapers. A mate of mine in the trade had to replace an engine because of that. He showed me pics of the filter hacked open.

I always buy Mercedes service items from Mercedes. I tried getting the 'service kit' bundles from eBay for the Voyager and was sent the wrong leads, wrong cabin filter, a cheap-ass oil filter without non-return valve. Often end up frustrated with the local motor factor though, they swore blind Apec rear pads at £52 for the 300C were 'the cheapest I'd find them' and gave me a dirty look when I left - bought EBC ones, but could have gone to USAutomotive and got whatever RockAuto sell for £25.

Depending on convenience, oil is usually from Halfords with trade card, or Millers. The 406 is going to be treated to PSA genuine filters and a nice fresh load of 10W40 synthetic soon.

Main dealer or guaranteed OE spec parts for me.  Cheap parts just aren't worth it.

APEC brakes , Mann filters and luk clutches are all proven good stuff in my experience

PLEASE NOTE IF YOU WISH TO BUY THIS KIT YOU WILL NEED TO CHECK WHICH DIESEL SYSTEM IS FITTEDTO THE CAR EITHER BOSCH OR SIEMANS.THIS USUALLY CAN BE FOUND STAMPED ON THE FUEL PUMP OR FUEL FILTER HOUSING

Filters are Bosch or MAHLE! It's got bugger all to do with the fuel system![/pet hate]

Why do they bother asking then?

It seems daft to use different filter housings for different fuel systems, but Peugeot did in the 1980s. Maybe the legacy lives on.

4.5l of 10W40 is £9.99 at Home Bargains.

I use this stuff in the X, it's all good.

Recently bought an air filter off the 'bay that was for the MGF. Except it was too wide, too long and too deep. Other than that, perfect. Took a fortnight to get the correct one from the supplier.

Why do they bother asking then?

Because that's what the factor's parts catalogues tell them to ask and the parts catalogues are wrong.

My HDi 110 has Bosch injection but if I ask a factor for a filter they'll give me a Bosch one and it won't fit because the housing on my car is a Mahle. Mahle does not equal Siemens. No 2.0 406 HDi 110 was ever fitted with Siemens injection!
