Margate Retro Show (pic heavy)

Went along to this for the first time on Sunday. I was torn between going to this, or the BL Autumn Rally at Milton Keynes museum, but as much as I would have loved to perv over Metros, Maestros and Allegros I went to this instead because it was only 10 miles away and I couldn't be arsed to drive to Milton Keynes. Sorry!

Nevertheless, it wasn't a bad show, with a great mix of cars. Now obviously there were quite a lot of lowered Volkswagens and Fords with daft wheels and so on, but there were a lot of interesting cars as well, and I managed to photograph most.

Favourite car? Well for me it had to be the 'oily rag' Lanchester LD10, an absolute peach of a car with a brilliant patina and I remember viewing it in a dark garage when it was part of a bereavement sale of about 50 old cars in the Brentwood area a few years ago. It hadn't been on the road since 1974 at that point.

So, lets start.

This cracking little Tweed Grey A35 was nice to see, local Canterbury reg as well. Made me wish mine was on the road, but its carb is off being rebuilt at the moment. Surprisingly, as I was about a mile away from the show, another nice A35, a Spruce Green one this time, appeared, which was coming the other way. Now obviously I waved madly (I was in the Somerset). The auld giffer behind the wheel completely ignored me! Amazing.

There were a lot of modified Escorts there, but this nice early MK3 was an absolute peach and stood out (for me) amongst all the rest.

There were a few nice Trumpets there. The green Toledo with the bike on the roof belongs to a young lad in Southend, I've waved to him from my FE Victor before.

The custom Marina was something else. Finished in the delightful shade of Russet Brown over Champagne Beige, it was really striking. It was for sale too.

I've got a feeling Alexg has spotted this brilliant MK3 Cortina before. It had a fantastic patina and was straight out of 1987.

The Datsun club were out in force with a superb selection. The silver one looked absolutely knackered with great gaping holes in the side, but it had a sign in the windscreen that said it was the last remaining example of its type, or something. The best thing was they were all running, soon after I took these pictures I heard a marshall ask if they could move the cars across the field as they "look a little lost over there". I imagined it would be a right ballache with several people needing to push the non-runners into position, but it wasn't at all. Excellent.

Metro #1

Metro #2. This thing was an absolute timewarp with all the original paperwork carefully laid out on the parcel shelf and its real 1993 tax disc in the window. Excellent.

Only an Ital van! Apart from the lack of suspension it was in nice 'early 1990s' condition as well.

Clean MK2 'scrote.

Don't see many Victor 101s these days, especially estates. This one was for sale.

What's better than seeing a period picture of an NSU RO80? The answer is seeing one in real life, that has survived to 2015, in brown. Lovely thing.

And the aforementioned Lanchester. A bit old for some tastes on here, but I think it's bloody lovely.

Oh yeah, here's a Bond Bug that's tagged onto the end for some reason.

Great pics, AD - looks like a good show and the right choice for the day.....Do hope that Lanchester isn't getting rodded - its already got a tattoo on its arse.   Local Southampton car to me originally by the look of it but not one I have come across before.   Some great pics there - MOAR PLEEZE!

Nice one Dicky - Any straight MK2 Granada's / Old Rovers / Vauxhalls? etc

Oh btw I have passed two different Carlton's recently! I really need a dashcam to catch these wanderers, like the blue MK2 Cav in Westcliff last Saturday...

The Lanchester was exported from new, can't remember where to, but it came back in the late 50's/early 60s and was registered as a new car, hence the registration with numbers before letters. Then I guess sometime in the early '70s it made its way across to Brentwood. The 1974 tax disc was issued in Portishead, Bristol, so presumably it never went on the road again once it went in the garage in Brentwood (yes I was sad enough to look at it!) I think the owner is on the Retro Rides forum. Can't remember what his plans are or were, but he's had it quite a while now and it still seems stock, down to the fantastic preselect gearbox.

MOAR pics coming up!

Yup, there were a fair few Sinclair C5s there.

This Viva was I think the only HB there. I guess it was a barn find where the owner had lacquered the rust to preserve the patina, it did look a bit strange.

304 coop was rather striking.

This nicely scruffy A40 belonged to the show organiser, along with an equally patinated Wolseley 1500 which was parked at the entrance, but I didn't get a picture of that. Sorry!

This was the only Maestro there. Goodness knows what spec it started out life as, I assume it's not actually a real turbo under that bodykit. The whole dash and interior had been replaced with what looked like MG ZR.

Obviously, needs more beige.

This FE VX4/90 was sweet, it was an auto as well so I was quite jealous!

Nice one. I recognise a few of those cars from shows around this way, including that fabulous tatty MK3 Cortina. Love the cushion of the Granada, how brilliantly pointless.

Was going to post my pics of this but you've done it for me. I too fell in love with that Lanchester. The Ro80 still has its rotary engine! I thought this was one of the best shows ever: a great mix of traditional classics, some fabulous customs and Americana, together with a good selection of general old chod. All shows should be like this!

Here's the aforementioned Wolseley at the entrance:

One or two more delights from this brilliant show. I left mid-afternoon and parked in Margate itself to see most of these come along the sea front...quite a cruise!

Yeah it was a great show Skoda_fan. Did you get a picture of my Somerset, just out of interest?

Did I hear you call for yet MOAR pics? Well you're getting some anyway.

This cracking 1100 estate was owned by an 18 year old lad who I chatted to for a bit, it was his first and only car.

Love the rear number plate on that P5. Original large recess sized plate but with the digits mounted at the bottom - excellent.

In the first batch of pix, what is the silver Datsun/Nissan that was said to be the 'last one'? I don't recognise it.

Great pics BTW. Slightly annoying that I was only about 20 miles away last weekend rather than this, otherwise I'd have gone too.

Good on that young lad with the 1100 Estate, perhaps we're not all doomed after all...

Is this your Somerset, Mr Dicky? I made a beeline for this and it was the first pic I took there as my father had one yonks ago. Great stuff, and very nostalgic.

That Austin lorry used to belong to a turf grower near Canterbury; I vividly recall it delivering the turf for our back lawn in 1981, when it was painted a darker shade of green :)

That's brilliant, well remembered! It would have been getting on a bit even in 1981.

Great photos!  Looks like a good show, less same-y than most - either that or you've (wisely, kindly) edited out row after row of identically shiny Stags, Escorts and MGBs.

Posted

No, you're right, there was none of that. (Although I did until recently own an MGB. I bought it to see what all the fuss is about, and have to say I loved it!). This show was like, if you're a petrolhead, and own something even remotely interesting, bring it along and show it off.

Anyway, have a few more pix....
